4 President s Report Topic OFFA Agreement Commuter students What I ve done so far Working with the University to write the OFFA Access Agreement 2018/19. This is an agreement introduced by HEFCE when the 9k fee rises happened I attended the Access All Areas conference in Manchester and got lots of ideas of how to improve student experience for what University of Manchester describes as Off Campus Students App/system for students I wrote a report for the Student Experience Committee with the following recommendations in relation to commuting students: For the Students Union to review car parking and child care on campus and find solutions to improve the student experience. For the University to collect information about whether a student commutes upon enrolment and share this information with the Students Union to improve segmentation and targeting information to those students. These recommendations were agreed and I will now be working with Academic Registry and staff within the SU to put these recommendations into actions. Burnley Campus Issues Masterplan Burnley students have complained about access to sports facilities. Myself and Gareth have been working very closely with the Vice Principal at Burnley to resolve the issues. Students at Burnley who require the gym for academic use now have full access to the new sports facilities at dedicated slots. We are continuing to work with the College to provide recreational gym facilities for all UCLan students. Oasis Consultation I spent a day consulting with students in the pop up shop about the layout and design of the new Oasis Faith Centre. The plans have now been approved by the project board. All comments made at the consultation have been logged and will be reported in due course pending further stages of the project. Q&A for all students Another successful session with various staff from the University in attendance. Next session is booked for 3 rd April 2pm. Student Voice I ve now successfully mapped out exactly how the Student Voice project will begin. There will be a series of workshops towards the end of this year with Students, Staff both in the SU and the University to review current feedback mechanisms of student voice and identify best practice across the University. 4
5 Ideas as Policy Policy Title Votes Proposed By Policy (if passed) Policy Lapse Date Hygiene for Homelessness Divest for Palestine Pay All Working Students the National Living Wage Votes (Likes 86, Dislikes 3) Votes (Likes 72, Dislikes 16) Votes (Likes 58, Dislikes 3) Hanna Latif Lobby the University to actively engage in the community to help students and people that impacted by homelessness Develop links to external organisations that help the homeless in Preston and provide volunteer opportunities for students Anam Riaz As students at UCLan, we want the University to commit to divesting from companies which A) Support, or are complicit in Israel s occupation of Palestinian territory due to their involvement in Israel s settlement industry, economic exploitation of the Palestinian people and their land and resources, or the control of the Palestinian population. B) Supply weapons, equipment or services to the Israeli military. In support of our Palestinian students here at UCLan, this idea calls for UCLan SU to stand in solidarity with NUS National Executive Council, NUS Black Students Campaign, NUS Scotland and the other 30+ Student Unions across the UK who have all passed motions in support of the Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions (BDS) campaign. Richard Crake To introduce the National Living Wage as a minimum wage to all of the UCLan Students Union staff. TO be implemented by either the next tax year, or academic year To lobby the University of Central Lancashire to adopt this policy for student staff 23/03/ /03/ /03/2020 Amendment: Submitted by Renaye Roberts- Sinclair. This amendment is to replace the both of the above points. The Students Council requests that on an annual basis the Trustees of the Union review the ability of the Union to 5
6 put into practice the commitment in the Union Plan. When the Union bids for funds to other organisations, it seeks to obtain funding for student staff opportunities on a Living Wage basis. The Union should continue to never offer unpaid internships and take an ethical approach to employment of interns and student placements to ensure that they are fairly rewarded for their contributions. Other Ideas that have passed: The following Ideas have passed and will be taken to the relevant staff department as decided by Council Chair Turnitin 72 Hour Advanced Upload Policy Proposal (Votes 51, Likes 49) Minimum 24 Hour Advanced Blackboard Upload Policy (Votes 53, Likes 51) Lockers for Commuting Students (Votes 53, Likes 51) The Option to Get Our Exam Papers Back (Votes 65, Likes 60) Optional Screening for Learning Disabilities and Mental Health Issues (Votes 48, Likes 6) Ideas that did not receive enough votes: The Students Union to Encourage Student Business and Entrepreneurship (Votes 26, likes 22) Pay Student Staff Weekly Again (Votes 45, likes 34) 6
