This year, rather than confining orselves to one week, I hope that we celebrate nrses and nrsing for the fll month of May. The theme for s this month is MUSC Nrses Taking Care: Taking Care of or Patients Taking Care of each Other Taking Care of or Stdents Taking Care of or Finances Taking Care of or Health We will be expanding on each of these areas on or College of Nrsing web site so that we can share or sccess and ftre goals with the larger commnity. Be sre to check it ot! In this colmn I wold like to focs on Nrses Taking Care of or Health. Yo see May also is Mental Health month and so it is a great time for s to pase and focs on those things that can keep s healthy and resilient in these demanding times. I wold like to share with yo 10 Tools identified by Mental Health America in their Live Yor Life Well campaign. These proven tools can help yo feel stronger and more hopefl. 1. Connect with others 2. Stay positive 3. Get physically active 4. Help others 5. Get enogh sleep 6. Create joy and satisfaction 7. Eat well 8. Take care of yor spirit 9. Deal better with hard times 10. 2 College Briefs Fnding Resorces for Ftre Nrse Edcators Nrse edcators play a pivotal role in shaping ftre generations of registered nrses and advancing the nrsing profession. The American Association of Colleges of Nrsing (AACN) has developed a fact sheet to highlight fnding sorces available to stdents considering gradate stdy en rote to nrse faclty careers. YES Campaign Saltes Two CON Employees On April 21, at the YES Campaign Loyalty Award ceremony, two members of the College of Nrsing family received awards for continos contribtions to the YES Campaign. Marilyn Laken received an award for 11 years and Peggy Sires received an award for 12 years of continos contribtions. Thank yo to both of these women for their gracios spport of the University. Celebrating Florence Nightingale The Karpeles Manscript Msem is opening a new exhibit that incldes two dozen manscripts chronicling the life and work of Florence Nightingale. As many of yo know, Florence Nightingale is best known for having fonded modern nrsing and helping to improve the care provided by hospitals. The exhibit will be on display May throgh Agst at the msem located at 68 Spring Street. Hors of operation are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tesday throgh Friday. For more information, call New Additions The College of Nrsing was recently gifted with two new oriental rgs. Peek in the Board Room and Room 401 to see or newest additions. MUSC Excellence: Ronding Isn t Scary As a leader, yo want yor employees to be happy, prodctive, and loyal. Indeed, it s yor job to create conditions that facilitate these qalities. Remember that Ronding is not an evalation, rather it is a sefl tool designed to gather information abot yor staff and yor department. If yo are having difficlty Ronding, loosen p. The Ronding log is not a militaristic instrment that can not be adapted to sit yor needs. Remember yor ltimate goal is to bild relationships, captre wins, and commnicate any isses/concerns. 4 Office of Academics A Win for FNP Stdent Kylie Perkins, a gradating (May 2009) family nrse practitioner stdent, recently pblished her paper entitled, Contraindication of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) Inhibitors for Patients Receiving Therapetic Plasma Exchanges in the November/December 2008 isse of the Nephrology Nrsing Jornal. Not only was her paper pblished, it was selected as an offering for Contining Nrsing Edcation credit by the American Nephrology Nrses Association. Her paper was initiated as a corse reqirement for the nrsing research and evidence-based practice corse she completed last year taght by Teresa Kelechi. Kylie is employed at MUSC as a clinical nrse coordinator. Congratlations to Kylie for her otstanding accomplishment! 2007 FNPs Receive 100% Pass Rate The Office of Academics has received a report from the American Academy of Nrse Practitioners (AANP) Certification Program on the Family Nrse Practitioner (FNP) Certification examination for Five stdents took the exam and 100 percent passed. FNP s can take either the American Nrses Credentialing Center s (ANCC) certification exam or the AANP certification exam. Crrently, more FNP stdents take the ANCC exam. The 2007 report from ANCC had eight FNP stdents testing with a 100 percent pass rate. We are anxiosly awaiting the 2008 AANP report. Compliance Training The 2009 edcation modles are now available on CATTS. Monthly reminders will be sent to help yo with keep p with the compliance training reqirements. If yo wold like to complete yor training sooner rather than later yo can access CATTS via the web at (se yor net ID as yor ser name and password). The deadline for completion is December 1, If yo have any qestions, contact Maria Toler at or tolerm@msc.ed. Grades De May 6 Remember that all grades are de no later than May 6. Please notify Stdent Services of any serios circmstances that yo may anticipate (i.e. incomplete grades, failres, etc...). CON Convocation and Gradation Information Congratlations to the Class of May 2009! Convocation is schedled for Thrsday, May 14 at St. Matthew s Ltheran Chrch, 405 King Street. The program will begin promptly at 3 p.m., however gradates are asked to arrive by 2 p.m. so yo may be assisted with robing and line-p for the processional. There will be a rehearsal for this special event on Wednesday, May 13 at 3 p.m. The following morning, Friday, May 15 is Gradation. This event begins at 9 a.m., bt gradates are asked to arrive at the Institte of Psychiatry Aditorim Lobby by 7:30 a.m. so yo may be assisted with robing and line-p for the processional. Gradates will wear their gradation robe, hoods, and caps. Comfortable shoes are recommended as yo will be walking from the Institte of Psychiatry (IOP) to Ashley Avene. Sn-screen and snglasses are also sggested. Water will be provided. Yo may wear what yo like nder yor gown. The Web site for Commencement is: ed/academics/grad/index.html. Cooking Healthy-Eating Smart (CHES) Making All the Right Moves Sbmitted by: Elaine Amella. Prpose: This project will se crrent federal and state fnded congregate meal systems to reach adlts aged 60 and older. The objectives are to determine if ntritional edcation focsing on safe food choices, preparation practices of simple and healthy foods and safe food handling can be adopted and delivered to congregate meal sites servicing older adlts in SC, as well as to design an instrment to assess food safety among older adlts. Grant Sbmissions Gayenell Magwood sbmitted a spplement to an R01 by Patricia Sharpe, USC, Prevention Research Center. The title of the parent grant is Behavioral and Spport Intervention for Diet and Exercise Among Underserved Women and is in response to a call from NIH Research Spplements to Promote Diversity Program. Fnded Projects Congratlations to Martina Meller, who received 20 percent fnding on the grant entitled, Prolonging Remission in Depressed Elderly (PRIDE). This project was sbmitted by the Department of Biostatistics, Bioinformatics & Epidemiology to NIH and the National Institte of Mental Health. The projected start date will be sometime in Jne. Congratlations! PhD Stdent Receives Fellowship PhD stdent, Melissa Aselage was selected as a John A. Hartford Fondation Bilding Academic Geriatric Nrsing Capacity (BAGNC) Scholar. This pre-doctoral fellowship was awarded to her based on her grant entitled, Alleviating Mealtime Difficlties in Older Adlts with Dementia. Congratlations, Melissa! Conference Presentation On April 25, Melissa Cox co-facilitated a workshop with Holly Wise entitled, Understanding and Addressing the Social Determinants of Health at the Annal Conference of the Soth Carolina Physical Therapy Association held at MUSC. 6 Office of Practice Es Todo Acercade College of Nrsing patient navigator, Jdith Rndbaken, participated in the It s All Abot Me / Es Todo Acercade activity at the Johns Island Regional Library on Satrday, April 18. The reading activity, for children ages 11 and yonger, helped kick off the Week of the Yong Child that promoted literacy and commnity involvement. Spanish speakers had the opportnity to learn more English and English speakers to learn some Spanish! Farewell to the Citadel Interns Many thanks to Citadel cadets, Jstin Caldwell and Christopher Thrmond for their hard work and good attitdes. They participated in a Hispanic Health Initiative internship dring spring semester. Caldwell Christopher and Jstin expressed how mch they enjoyed and learned from their Spanish Thrmond translation experience at the College of Nrsing. We wish them the best as they contine looking for work where they can help the Spanish-speaking poplation. Helping Ot Girls Scots On April 23, the PNP class of 2010 (Ashley Bath, Jesica Cleveland, Alyssa Cogdill, Rebekah England, Alana Harrison, Amy Moffet, Anna Christy Norris, and Shannon Whitehead) performed physicals at the North Charleston Girl Scot Services Center for girls who wold like to attend smmer camp bt cold not afford the reqired physical exam. The stdents were spported by PNP faclty Rebecca Jianzzi and Gigi Smith. The Girl Scot Association was very appreciative that the MUSC College of Nrsing was able to do this for the second year in a row. Nationally Recognized Nrse Entreprener to Speak Debra Toney, PhD, RN, will present Sccessfl Leadership dring Chaotic Times on Friday, May 8 at 2 p.m. in the Basic Science Bilding (BSB) 502. Dr. Toney is president of the National Black Nrses Association, fonding president of the Sothern Nevada Black Nrses Association, a Robert Wood Johnson Exective Nrse Fellow and fonder of her own health care bsiness. She is pblished and is a nationally recognized speaker on leadership, entreprenership, bsiness development, women in bsiness and women s isses. This event is co-sponsored by the Center for Commnity Health Partnerships, the MUSC Office of Diversity, and the Tri-Conty Black Nrses Association. Applications Available for Commnity Engaged Scholars Applications are now available for the Commnity Engaged Scholars Program sponsored by the Center for Commnity Health Partnerships (CCHP). This program will provide training, pilot fnds, and mentorship for p to five teams consisting of an academic and commnity partner who have interests in commnity based participatory research. The goal of this program is to increase the capacity of academic-commnity partnerships to condct research, and ltimately, improve the health of or commnities in Soth Carolina and beyond. Sponsored by: The Center for Commnity Health Partnerships StAFF News McCottry-Brown Join CON Staff Tammy McCottry-Brown has joined the College of Nrsing staff as a project manager in the Office of Research and Evalation. Her primary dties will be working on a research stdy entitled, Sister to Sister, which is a social ecological based smoking cessation intervention in pblic hosing neighborhoods. In addition, she will coordinate and schedle all grant activities between mltiple sites, work with neighborhood tenant associations, commnity health workers, and research participants. If Tammy looks familiar, then yo have probably seen her on Comcast Cable channel 2. She is the host and prodcer of the award winning Tammy Show, the only Lowcontry commnity television 30-minte talk show. The show featres gests from non-profit and commnity organizations who discss topics inclding arts, edcation, health, literatre and other hman interest stories. Tammy is a native of Charleston. At birth, Tammy was adopted by the late Trner McCottry, MD and Catherine M. McCottry, MD, PhD (retired). Tammy earned an ndergradate degree in microbiology from Howard University in Washington, DC. She is married to her hsband, Christopher and is the mother of 14-year-old daghter, Catherine, and 7-year-old son, Christopher. 7

8 Stdent news Laird Recognized with Palmetto Gold Scholarship Grace Laird, Class of May 2009, was recognized at the annal Palmetto Gold Gala on April 25 in Colmbia, SC. Ranked in the top five of her class, Grace was indcted into Sigma Theta Ta International Nrsing Honor Society last fall. In addition to her stdent role, Grace is a stdent technician at the Medical University of Soth Carolina in the Neroscience Step-down ICU. She demonstrates caring qalities to patients and their families. She serves on the MUSC Stdent Government Association and attends bimonthly meetings with representatives from all MUSC colleges to discss pertinent isses affecting the camps. She is the liaison for College of Nrsing stdents and has been an excellent commnicator and role model. She was selected as a stdent representative to attend the College of Nrsing Annal Retreat. Grace is motivated by philanthropy and has a long history of commnity service and leadership, inclding volnteering at a medical clinic as part of a Katrina Relief Team, and serving on the Exective Committee for Relay for Life. She has been a blood pressre clinic volnteer at Laing Middle School. The Palmetto Gold Scholarship Program is the largest scholarship award program for ndergradate stdent nrses in SC. A $1,000 scholarship is awarded each year to recipients from each of the 23 approved registered nrse programs in the state. Presidential Scholars Program Annonces Class of J Vonne Hnter, Devon Licari, Bonnie Shepherd, and Amy Painter have been selected for the prestigios MUSC Presidential Scholars Program. These stdents were selected from a competitive applicant pool from each of the six colleges at MUSC. The mission of the Presidential Scholars is to explore the complex social, political, and hman isses that shape the delivery of health care services in SC. VA Valor Program Selects CON Stdents Three College of Nrsing stdents, Jonathan Edwards, Aindrea Maddray, and Rachal Thorne have been selected for the VA Valor Program. This program (VA Learning Opportnities Residency) is an initiative to recrit nrsing stdents who are entering their senior year in a baccalareate degree nrsing program. The nrsing stdents are given the opportnity to develop competence in nrsing specialty areas while being paid, attend nrsing-focsed clinical conferences, receive corse work, and perform clinical practice with a qalified RN preceptor on their assigned nits. The VALOR stdents consistently express positive feedback abot their meaningfl and invalable clinical experiences. SNA Elects New Officers The College of Nrsing s Stdent Nrses Association is excited to annonce the winners of or recent election: Chip Brger, President; Hannah French, Vice President; Sara Colbert, Commnity Director; Bree Mandray, Treasrer; Katie Caldwell, Secretary; Chelsie Dennis, Historian; Tiffany Hnter, Legislative Director; and Katelyn Mcklow, Breakthrogh to Nrsing. In addition, Amanda Oswald has been appointed to serve as or State Liaison, a new position that has been created so that we may be represented and informed on all of or state association activities. We wold like to thank all the hard work that the previos officers did, with a special thanks to Zerlinna Shannon who served as president. Yo will all be missed! For the first time in many years, MUSC was represented at the SNA National Convention in April. Zerlinna, Hannah, Chelsie, and Amanda all attended this event in Nashville, Tennessee, and retrned with many wonderfl ideas for ftre fndraising activities. We encorage all stdents in the nrsing program to register with SNA on or national web site at Registration is $30 for stdents each year. Not only will it keep yo abreast of SNA events, bt it also offers disconts inclding Barnes and Noble, NCLEX review materials, and scrbs. 8

9 Stdent news Mlloy Selected for MUSC Stdent Leadership Society MSN stdent Cathy Mlloy was indcted into the MUSC Stdent Leadership Society at the annal Stdent Leadership Banqet on April 15. She is the first College of Nrsing stdent to be selected for this prestigios camps grop. She received a $2,500 scholarship. She is a stellar stdent, gradating from the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nrsing degree program with a 3.5 GPA. She was indcted into Sigma Theta Ta, the International Nrsing Honor Society. In the gradate program, she has a 3.89 GPA. Cathy s spirit of giving is evidenced by her volnteer activities at both Hospice of Charleston and East Cooper Mlloy Hospital. She clearly cares abot the health care of the most vlnerable and often acts as an advocate for those who are often marginalized. Her compassion for older adlts and their families is extraordinary, as is her interest in promoting their qality of life. She is crrently a member of the Advisory Board for Respite Ministries, a day care service for persons with Alzheimer s Disease. Cathy was recognized in 2007 and 2008 by MUSC Gives Back with the Volnteer of the Year Award representing the College of Nrsing. Working closely with Elaine Amella, Cathy has been able to incorporate her interests into research and pblications. She worked with Elaine on a NIH/NINR-sponsored research project entitled: Meals at Home for Person s with Late-Stage Dementia. As a research assistant, she contacted commnity partners, recrited research participants, collected data, and followed care-givers and persons with dementia in their homes throghot the time they were enrolled in the stdy. She is not hesitant to work with persons in diverse commnities (inner city, rral, minority) and is extremely respectfl of everyone she enconters. Elaine and Cathy coathored an article pblished in the Jornal of American Psychiatric Nrses Association. Elaine shared that dring their bi-weekly meetings, Cathy demonstrated growth in both nrsing skills and knowledge, and is trly a fll member of the research team. Lcy Megginson, a PhD stdent, was also recognized by MUSC Gives Back for her volnteer service to a commnity-based health clinic in Rome, Georgia. She is the first on-line stdent to receive this honor.
