IDD FELLOWSHIP FOR NURSE PRACTITIONERS IN NC ANNA WILKINS, RN, BSN LEND PROJECT 2016

Developing an Intellectal and Developmental Disability Specific Crriclm for North Carolina Nrse Practitioners Pamela Smith, MSN, FNP-BC; Michelle S. Franklin, MSN, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC; Robert B. Christian, MD University of North Carolina School of Medicine; University of North Carolina School of Nrsing Carolina Institte for Developmental Disabilities; University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Backgrond Needs Assessment Preliminary Needs Assessment Reslts Preliminary Needs Assessment Reslts NC-LEND is invested in the exploration of systemic approaches to decrease the health disparities of persons with Intellectal an Developmental Disabilities (IDD). NC-LEND and CIDD are committed to empowering Nrse Practitioners (NP) with advanced leadership skills and specialized training in direct patient care to persons with IDD. Between 2012 and 2019 the demand for medical care in N.C. will increase by 14.4%. Forty years of research evalating patient otcomes reveals NP s consistently provide high-qality safe care, generate revene, redce lengthy stays, and standardize the qality of patient care. NP s can help fill the void in the crrent healthcare shortage and provide high-qality care to persons with IDD. Vision/Process Design an IDD specific crriclm for NC NP Universities and NC NP s (begn 8/2014) Condct Needs Assessment Develop Clinical Site Partner Fnding Acqisition Promote and spport NC Training Program se of IDD Crriclm Implement NC NP IDD Mini- Fellowship for post gradate NPs. o Methods Dal Web Based Qaltrics Srveys of: NPs with NC Licenses Over 6000 recipients North Carolina Universities with Nrse Practitioner programs of stdy. 10 Total NC NP Programs NPs were asked to rate adeqacy of their training and interest in additional training related to meeting the healthcare needs of persons with IDD. NC NP University Program Faclty were asked to comment on level of IDD related sbject matter inclded in their NP crriclm. Preliminary Needs Assessment Reslts Figre 1. Description of primary practice setting: n=350 Figre 2. How well has yor basic and contining NP edcation prepared yo to care for persons with IDD? n=350 Figre 3. NC NP willingness to spend time away from work for frther edcation on IDD health. n=350 Figre 4. What wold be an appropriate incentive for yo to consider additional training? n=350 Figre 5. NC NP Program Response: Wold yo be interested in providing additional didactic IDD crriclm content? 4/10 programs as of 7/2015 Discssion Preliminary needs assessment sggests there is lack of satisfaction with crrent level of IDD training in NP programs in North Carolina NPs indicate interest in post gradate training in IDD health NP programs indicate interest in increasing IDD training content CIDD/NC-LEND is poised to aid NC NP programs to increase IDD content CIDD/NC-LEND is well positioned to develop a post gradate NP focsed IDD health mini-fellowship We are exploring fnding opportnities with the NC Developmental Disabilities Concil and mltiple fondations to spport implementation References American Association of Nrse Practitioners (AANP). 3 WHY NURSE PRACTITIONERS? With the inception of the Affordable Care Act, more Americans are now covered by insrance. The demand for medical care is increasing significantly, especially with the goal of having a medical home for each individal. Primary care providers are overwhelmed by this increase and nrse practitioners can fill in the gaps where primary care is lacking as advanced and skilled practitioners.

SO WHAT DID WE DO? Srvey reslts showed a strong interest in North Carolina from niversities and practicing NPs The research team developed a proposed plan to constrct a year-long fellowship to best train NPs that are crrently practicing and have an interest in IDD that inclded: The didactic crriclm already sed for LEND trainees and fellows Different clinical sites throghot NC to provide different avenes to train NPs (CIDD, Mrdoch, CDSA, Developmental Pediatricians, etc.)

Bt doing that costs money, right? Mission statement is to promote the establishment of comprehensive health care for adlts with developmental disabilities designed to address their niqe and fndamental needs. Most of my work for the LEND project was writing portions of the grant application to best portray the proposed plan from the research team

Experience First time on a research team: excellent experience working together, meeting deadlines. First time grant writing: gathered resorces from the Sakai site from Dr. Dichter at the CIDD Have always been scared of research, bt this helped me realize what my strengths are as a researcher. Realizing the impact of what this research project cold do for NPs and ltimately, individals with IDD in North Carolina. Potential for a national model.

Where are we now in the process? The research team sccessflly completed the grant application and received feedback that we shold apply again this April Goal is to reformlate for a 1 year proposal, to trial rn the fellowship with a very small sample of interested NPs in NC to work ot any obvios deficits or changes to the proposed plan Once the year long trial is complete, we will then again apply for bridge fnding to contine the fellowship program.
