Message from the National Program Manager First and foremost, I would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the lands and waters on which we live and work, and recognise that this land has always been under their custodianship. I pay my respect to Elders both past and present. I also extend respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who may be reading this newsletter. I would like to congratulate Darren and the WACHS team for a very successful Community of Practice and National Data Workshop held in Dubbo in early May, the feedback we have received at the NPC has been overwhelmingly positive. Julianne Donnelly National Program Manager A BIG thank you also goes out to our keynote speakers Ms Debbie Sheehan and Professor Roianne West. These very talented speakers brought depth to the program and challenges for us all to consider in our daily ANFPP practice, irrespective of our roles and responsibilities. More highlights from the Community of Practice and National Data Workshop are included in the following pages. I would like to welcome the teams from our new implementing sites the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) and Top End Health Services (TEHS). I m pleased that many of you had the chance to meet our newest team members whilst in Dubbo. Welcome to all and I m sure you will find the work ahead of you very exciting, challenging and rewarding! The national ANFPP program expansion has also lent itself to an opportunity for the review of the ANFPP curriculum materials and the integration of new modules including STAR, IPV and additional mental health material. This work will include improving the cultural context of ANFPP materials to ensure they meet the needs of the community and families we are engaging with. Other exciting work taking place includes the accreditation of the ANFPP FPW/ACW core curriculum; the National Workforce Development Study project (which will investigate issues such as staff retention and recruitment) and ongoing negotiations with the USA and UK NFP programs to share and implement strategies to support workforce development, competency and best practice. Other exciting ANFPP news includes the approval for funding from Commonwealth Health to develop the National Data Collection System. This means that once completed, all sites will be able to collect data electronically (by using an electronic device e.g: tablet or phone) then deposit this information electronically into a National Data Collection System. It is anticipated that this model will greatly improve the future efficiency and quality of data collected. Lastly but not least, on behalf of the ANFPP program and all of our stakeholders I would like to acknowledge the commitment and support that Ms Pat Anderson AO has given to the program. Pat has been instrumental in the development and growth of ANFPP in Australia since its inception in Pat has recently resigned from her membership of the National ANFPP Leadership Group due to her growing commitments and we thank her for the significant contribution she has made to the successful implementation of ANFPP in Australia. 2

Highlights from the Annual Community of Practice and National Data Workshop This year, the annual ANFPP Community of Practice and National Data Workshop events were held over two consecutive days in Dubbo, New South Wales with more than 60 participants. The two day event featured a very full agenda which focused on the programs new innovations and key findings from the latest ANFPP National Data Report. A huge thank you must be extended to Darren and the team at WACHS, for hosting the event in their country and coordinating the Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony with Lewis Burns, as well as the cultural performance delivered by Wellington State High School students. The Community of Practice and the National Data Workshop provide an important opportunity for ANFPP staff at all levels and across all sites to network and share learning experiences. In particular, this year it was great to see representatives from the Commonwealth Department of Health, the ANFPP Leadership Group, implementing site CEOs, Program Managers and ANFPP Home Visiting teams. This demonstrates a strong commitment to the program and also to our shared vision of Closing the Gap. 3

Highlights from the Annual Community of Practice and National Data Workshop We were extremely fortunate this year to have NFP International Consultant and ANFPP Leadership Group member, Debbie Sheehan attend and present several keynote presentations. Significantly, Debbie introduced the Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) innovation which will be adapted for the Australian context and delivered through the ANFPP education curriculum. It was also an honour to have Professor Roianne West from the ANFPP Leadership Group and Griffith University's Inaugural Professor and Director of the First Peoples Health Unit. Professor Roianne West presented on the importance of critical reflective practice within ANFPP by sharing her personal experiences as a professional Aboriginal woman in Australia. Participants felt that Debbie and Roianne s inspirational and thought provoking presentations provided information and tools which could be taken back to their roles and organisations to improve their practice and prepare for new innovations. For many, our keynote speakers were the highlight of the two days. Lastly, thank you to all participants for engaging and contributing over the two days. It is wonderful to celebrate the great work being undertaken across the program, to have the opportunity to network and to share experiences. Feedback from participant evaluations is being collated to inform next year's annual Community of Practice and National Data Workshop and a summary will be made available to participants. If you would like to provide any further feedback on the 2016 Community of Practice and National Data Workshop please info@anfpp.com.au 4

Wuchopperen Health Service, Cairns Our Kitchen Rules Article Contributed by Doris Ahmat, Family Partnership Worker and Trained Good, Quick Tukka Facilitator Twelve months ago, Wuchopperen hosted a Good, Quick Tukka (GQT) session as part of their monthly client activities. This year, on Tuesday 22 March, they did it again, in partnership with the Cape York Partnership s Girl Academy. Both ANFPP clients and students from the Girl Academy attended the cooking session. This made a grand total of 17 participants who cooked up a storm in the Girl Academy s huge, commercial kitchen. A three course meal for 25 attendees was prepared by the ANFPP clients and Girl Academy students. THE MENU Entrée Pumpkin soup Main Chicken and vegetable stir-fry Dessert One-cup pancakes Importantly, each GQT meal was low fat, low salt, and economical to cook with ingredients easily sourced from supermarkets. To prepare the meals, each participant was assigned to one of three work stations, and ANFPP staff supervised the preparation. Prior to the session, all ANFPP staff completed an on line I m Alert Food Safety Training course. 6

Good, Quick Tukka is a cooking education program inspired by Jamie Oliver s Ministry of Food that was developed by the Queensland Aboriginal & Islander Health Council. The program centres on the belief that anyone can learn how to cook something, all they have to do is to give it a try. Participants in the program learn cooking skills and build confidence in their cooking ability. The GQT program targets young people; young mums; support groups (e.g. diabetes support group); and staff in the workplace. The main objectives of QGT are to: 1. Engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people and adults. 2. Increase participants confidence and skills in food preparation and cooking. 3. Explore cooking techniques and different foods. 4. Enhance participants social experiences and enjoyment of food by creating a fun and relaxed environment during the program. In conclusion, the 17 participant evaluations for the GQT Session were positive. The majority identified that they enjoyed the session a lot; learned to cook something new in the session; and intend to cook the recipes again at home (especially the stir fry!). It was a great day, and I d like to extend my graditude to the Girl Academy for allowing the use of their very professional kitchen, and to my fellow ANFPP colleagues for making the very busy day run smoothly! 7

Wellington Aboriginal Corporation Health Service, Wellington Site Update Article Contributed by Emma Ramsay, Nurse Supervisor The team at WACHS have been going through a period of significant change, with a number of staff members leaving the program and new staff joining. It has been a good opportunity to review and refine processes so we can continue to offer the program in the best possible way to our clients. Our staffing changes have included: Program Manager Robyn Gunter has joined the team. Both Robyn and Mel attended the ANFPP Community of Practice and National Data Workshop, which gave Robyn an exciting opportunity to network and get up to speed on the program. Nurse Home Visitors Kellie and Nic have both left the team and we wish them all the best in their future endeavours. Aboriginal Family Partnership Workers we bid farewell to Kerry as she has moved away from Wellington. We are pleased to welcome Francie to the team see our staff profile to get to know more about Francie! Admin Teena has moved over to the main building at WACHS and we have also been joined by Sue, who works with the ACTT team in our Dubbo building, the Aboriginal Child and Maternal Hub. We are currently advertising for new Nurse Home Visitors, and invite anyone looking for a change to contact us for more information. The WACHS team hosted the annual Christmas Party and Graduation at Kidzoo in December 2015, which was attended by staff, clients and their families. Lorna from Buninyong SACC did a music and movement session with attendees which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. There were a few tears of pride as ANFPP staff presented clients and their toddlers with their graduation certificates and gifts. In total 29 clients graduated from ANFPP at WACHS in

We were extremely lucky to be able to host the 2016 ANFPP Community of Practice and National Data Workshop, held at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. A number of attendees were able to travel to Wellington to view the main site of WACHS, as well as visit the Aboriginal Child & Maternal Hub in Dubbo. A big thanks to Mel for organising the Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony by Lewis Burns, and the performance by students from Wellington High School. We hope all participants found the opportunity to come together to be inspiring and insightful. Emma, Nic and Kellie attended the NCAST Feeding Scales training in February, with Emma and Kellie also attending the NCAST Teaching Scales training. The training was both challenging and enjoyable, and particularly enjoyed the opportunity to participate with staff from other sites. It is exciting to be able to reintroduce NCAST into the program at WACHS, and discussions continue about its implementation and presentation to clients to ensure this valuable tool is used in a culturally safe manner. Sarah, Darlene and Emma attended a health professionals information evening run by the Stay strong and healthy it s worth it project, followed by a community day held at Buninyong SACC. These sessions were informative and were well attended by both health professionals and community members, raising awareness of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). We were able to obtain copies of the promotional videos developed by this project, and watched Tristan, the story of an Aboriginal boy and his family, affected by FASD, which brought many audience members to tears. The most significant message we took away, was that alcohol is indeed, a teratogen, and FASD needs to be considered as brain injury. The take home message for the community was that if you are sexually active and drinking, it is important to use contraception, due to the risk of FASD. For anyone planning a pregnancy, it is best to avoid alcohol altogether. While we have very low rates of disclosed alcohol use in pregnancy at our site, many women do continue to drink until they discover their pregnancy, sometimes heavily. Sarah and Darlene have also had the opportunity to attend Feltman training, learning about a diabetes education tool developed for use with Aboriginal communities. With participation in this training comes the opportunity to receive a Feltmum, which we can use with our clients, increasing our knowledge and the tools available to present information to our clients in new and innovative ways. Coming up we have the Quit B Fit Tour Launch, held by the Tackling Indigenous Smoking team, which will involve guests such as Shannon Noll and the Street Warriors. This will be a good opportunity to get out and about in our community and network with other teams and services, who share the goal of Closing the Gap. Staff Fun Facts Name: Francie Kelly Role: Aboriginal Family Partnership Worker Favourite food: Chocolate Favourite quote: Never judge a book by its cover Favourite moment as a mother: Watching my twin boys play and interact with their baby sister. 9

Central Australian Aboriginal Congress Inc. Alice Springs Welcome Nurse Home Visitors Anita Maynard, Nurse Home Visitor I am an Aboriginal woman from Tasmania. I was born and raised on a small island called Cape Barren Island off the coast of Tasmania. The community consisted of around 120 Aboriginal people. Cape Barren was returned by the Government to the community in So the island is now community owned and controlled. I am a mother to two sons who are 24 and 21 years old. I am a very proud grandmother to a beautiful little granddaughter who is almost two years old. I returned to university at a late age to study my nursing degree with the intention of working with Aboriginal people. I applied for the position of Nurse Home Visitor with the ANFPP because I saw the importance of Aboriginal women receiving support and education in the early stages of their pregnancy through to toddlerhood. I am passionate about Aboriginal health across many different areas and believe we all need to strive to lessen the gap between Indigenous and non Indigenous health. Our babies and young children are the future generations, therefore any influence that we as Nurse Home Visitors have on their future is important. I love working on country with Indigenous people and know that I will find this role very rewarding and worthwhile. Glenda Woodall, Nurse Home Visitor My name is Glenda Woodall and I have recently started work as a Nurse Home Visitor with ANFPP at CAAC. My family and I emigrated to Adelaide in August 2010 from the UK, where I had worked for 10 years as a Health Visitor in London. Since arriving in Australia I have worked in district nursing and practice nursing. I am now very excited to have the opportunity to return to working with mums, babies and their families. I look forward to being part of the ANFPP team and to making our new home in Alice Springs. 10

Institute for Urban Indigenous Health, Brisbane Implementation Update Over the past six months, the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) have undertaken ANFPP Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3 and PIPE education training. The team have also completed the first three implementation workshops as well as DCS training and have now begun taking on clients. Top End Health Services, Darwin Welcome! In March, members of the NPC team travelled up to Darwin to meet with the Top End Health Services (TEHS) team and presented an overview of the ANFPP. The meeting was attended by a number of key stakeholders who will be involved with the program. We are very pleased to welcome the team to the program and hope other team members enjoyed the opportunity to hear from them at the Community of Practice and National Data Workshop in May. 11

NPC Staff Profile Jhalli Pleasant Article Contributed by Jhalli Pleasant, Administration Assistant Wunyana, my name is Jhalli Pleasant and I am 19 years old. My heritage is Aboriginal and black American. I was born and raised in Brisbane. My mob are the Gooreng Gooreng people from South Central Queensland and Munanjhalli from Beaudesert. I graduated from Mount Alvernia College in 2013 and have since worked with Woolworths and Endeavour Foundation before I eventually found my way to Abt JTA this truly has been a blessing in disguise. I ve been working with the ANFPP program as the Administration Assistant for close to nine months and I enjoy my role immensely. Being part of the program has given me a clearer vision towards the career pathway I want to pursue. I want to make a change in Indigenous health and I have always been inspired to become a nurse since I was a young girl. My heart s desire is now becoming a reality and I am planning to start my study in the next few months. Working with the team and having such great influences around me has lifted my spirit, improved my morale and I now feel more confident, passionate and determined to achieve anything I put my mind to. My self efficacy has also improved and being part of the program has helped me learn about the role of the FPW's and ACW's. I love that I am always learning something new and my knowledge is constantly expanding. Meeting everyone in Dubbo at the Community of Practice and National Data Workshop and having the opportunity to network and get amongst it was very exciting for me, being able to get a deeper insight on everyone s role and the program. I am already looking forward to the next one! 12

ANFPP NPC Hosts International Intern Muhamad Nuzul On Monday 14 March, the ANFPP NPC team had the pleasure of welcoming Muhamad Nuzul, a social anthropology student from Indonesia. Nuzul undertook five months of preparation before coming to Australia for his internship and the focus of this was to research the significance of culture in the development of intervention projects. Nuzul visited the local Baduy community, to better understand their culture, values and beliefs. While in Australia, Nuzul learnt about the ANFPP and in particular, how the NFP program has been adapted to the Australian context. Article Contributed by Muhamad Nuzul "While in Australia, I had the opportunity to visit the University of Queensland on Friday 18 March and joined Dr Lynda Shevellar s course on Community Development Local and International Practice. The professor gave me a model that helped me to consider the discourse of development. "Indonesia is a very diverse country. We have a lot of cultures and these are highly connected but sadly, culture is often not a priority due to Government structure. Hopefully, with an awareness of Indonesia s diversity and the knowledge that I have learnt from this internship, I will be able to promote cultural sensitivity within Indonesian policy. "This internship was a rare opportunity and I would like to say thanks to the organisation that I belong to for selecting me to be a part of the program, Gerakan Mari Berbagi (GMB) in Indonesia. This was not an easy task and I had to struggle with the selection process to get the opportunity to come to Australia. Lastly, I would really like to thank all Abt JTA staff and the ANFPP team for sharing their knowledge and experience with me. I hope to meet you all again in the future," Nuzul said. The NPC team would like to thank Nuzul for his generous gift (pictured). Topeng is Indonesian for "mask" and is a dramatic form of Indonesian dance in which one or more mask wearing, ornately costumed performers interpret traditional narratives concerning fabled kings, heroes and myths, accompanied by gamelan music. We wish Nuzul all the best with his future endeavours. 13

For two decades the award winning CRANAplus Bush Support Services has contributed to the retention and wellbeing of multi disciplinary health workers by supporting them and their families to successfully manage the stress associated with rural and remote/isolated practice. The Bush Support Line is a TOLL FREE, 24/7 telephone support service staffed by Psychologists with rural and remote experience. Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Psychologists are available upon request. Callers are NOT required to be members of CRANAplus. This free service offers anonymity and confidentiality. Repeat callers may speak to the same psychologist upon request. The 24/7 Bush Support Line is not a single intervention service. It implements a framework of strategies to prevent or manage the stress associated with remote practice. All strategies are targeted at the sources of stress shared by more than 6,000 remote health practitioners, whether doctor, remote area nurse, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Health Worker or allied health practitioner delivering services on site or through visiting health services. Strategies include psychological intervention workshops aimed at developing resilience through positive psychology, reflective practice and creativity. CRANAplus Bush Support Services reflects the current e psychology trend in intervention through the use of asynchronous counseling, SKYPE and the CRANAplus Bush Support Services Bullying App. All products and services have included Indigenous input during their development. The Bush Support Service is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health.
