1 About the service we inspected The Care Inspectorate regulates care services in Scotland. Information in relation to all care services is available on our website at This service was previously registered with the Care Commission and transferred its registration to the Care Inspectorate on 1 April The Care Inspectorate is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of all children receiving a care service. We want to ensure they have the best start in life, are ready to succeed and live longer, healthier lives. We check services are meeting the principles of Getting it right for every child (also known as GIRFEC). Set up by Scottish Government, GIRFEC is a national approach to working in a consistent way with all children and young people. It is underpinned by the principles of prevention and early intervention. The approach helps services focus on what makes a positive difference for children and young people - and what they can do to improve. GIRFEC is being woven into all policy, practice, strategy and legislation that affect children, young people and their families. There are eight wellbeing indicators at the heart of GIRFEC. They are: safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, active, respected, responsible, and included. They are often referred to as the SHANARRI indicators. We use these indicators at inspection, to assess how services are making a positive difference for children. George Heriot's School are registered to provide a care service for a maximum of 40 children at any one time aged from three years to entry to primary school age. The session operates between the hours of 8.30am and 2.00pm daily. At the end of the nursery session, some of the children attend the Wraparound Care facility for children up to the age of primary two. This facility is housed in another building within the grounds of the school. The children have access to a playroom, toilet facilities and a downstairs hall throughout the session. On the first day of the inspection, there were 31 children in attendance. page 5 of 30

The service is situated within Central Edinburgh and is close to bus routes and local amenities. The nursery accommodation is located in a separate building in the grounds of George Heriots's School and of an entrance foyer, toilet facilities, office area and a playroom with kitchen facilities. There is also access to a fully enclosed garden area directly outside the nursery. The Head of the Junior school is the named manager on their certificate of registration with the Care Inspectorate. The Early Years Depute has delegated management responsibilities for the nursery. Recommendations A recommendation is a statement that sets out actions that a care service provider should take to improve or develop the quality of the service, but where failure to do so would not directly result in enforcement. Recommendations are based on the National Care Standards, SSSC codes of practice and recognised good practice. These must also be outcomes-based and if the provider meets the recommendation this would improve outcomes for people receiving the service. Requirements A requirement is a statement which sets out what a care service must do to improve outcomes for people who use services and must be linked to a breach in the Public Services Reform (Scotland) Act 2010 (the "Act"), its regulations, or orders made under the Act, or a condition of registration. Requirements are enforceable in law. We make requirements where (a) there is evidence of poor outcomes for people using the service or (b) there is the potential for poor outcomes which would affect people's health, safety or welfare. Based on the findings of this inspection this service has been awarded the following grades: Quality of care and support - Grade 6 - Excellent Quality of environment - Grade 6 - Excellent page 6 of 30

Quality of staffing - Grade 6 - Excellent Quality of management and leadership - Grade 6 - Excellent This report and grades represent our assessment of the quality of the areas of performance which were examined during this inspection. Grades for this care service may change following other regulatory activity. You can find the most up-to-date grades for this service by visiting our website or by calling us on or visiting one of our offices. page 7 of 30

2 How we inspected this service The level of inspection we carried out In this service we carried out a low intensity inspection. We carry out these inspections when we are satisfied that services are working hard to provide consistently high standards of care. What we did during the inspection We wrote the report following an unannounced inspection. The inspection took place over two days. The first day was on Monday 8 February 2016 between 9.30am and 4.30pm. The second day was Friday 12 February 2016 between the hours of 9.00am and 1.00pm when we met with the Head of the Junior School, Depute Head of the Junior School and Early Years Depute (the management team). On the second day we viewed paperwork and gave feedback about our findings including the grades to be awarded for the Quality Themes. As part of the inspection, we took account of the completed annual return which we received on 26 February We also took into account the selfassessment form that we asked the provider to complete and submit to us. The quality themes and statements we chose to look at in this inspection were in line with our internal guidance and to assess the service's progression since the previous inspection. We sent 11 care standards questionnaires to the service to give to parents and all of these questionnaires were returned to us. During the inspection process, we gathered evidence from various sources:- We spoke with:- - Head of the Junior School. - Depute Head of the Junior School - Early Years Depute. - Wraparound Care Manager. page 8 of 30

- Bursar. - Some children during their play. - Some parents when they arrived to collect their child. - The staff team - School Matron. We looked at:- - A sample of children's records. - Planning documentation. - Medication system. - Accident records. - Staff meeting records - Risk assessments. - The 11 care standard questionnaires returned to the Care Inspectorate. - The service's self-assessment document that they submitted to us. - Observing how staff work. - The environment and equipment in the nursery and the wraparound care facility that the nursery children accessed. - Policies and procedures. Grading the service against quality themes and statements We inspect and grade elements of care that we call 'quality themes'. For example, one of the quality themes we might look at is 'Quality of care and support'. Under each quality theme are 'quality statements' which describe what a service should be doing well for that theme. We grade how the service performs against the quality themes and statements. Details of what we found are in Section 3: The inspection Inspection Focus Areas (IFAs) In any year we may decide on specific aspects of care to focus on during our inspections. These are extra checks we make on top of all the normal ones we make during inspection. We do this to gather information about the quality of these aspects of care on a national basis. Where we have examined an page 9 of 30

inspection focus area we will clearly identify it under the relevant quality statement. Fire safety issues We do not regulate fire safety. Local fire and rescue services are responsible for checking services. However, where significant fire safety issues become apparent, we will alert the relevant fire and rescue services so they may consider what action to take. You can find out more about care services' responsibilities for fire safety at page 10 of 30

The annual return Every year all care services must complete an 'annual return' form to make sure the information we hold is up to date. We also use annual returns to decide how we will inspect the service. Annual Return Received: Yes - Electronic Comments on Self Assessment Every year all care services must complete a 'self assessment' form telling us how their service is performing. We check to make sure this assessment is accurate. The Care Inspectorate received a fully completed self-assessment document from the provider. We were satisfied with the way the provider completed this and with the relevant information included for each heading that we grade services under. The provider identified what they thought the service did well, some areas for development and any changes planned. The provider told us how the people who used the care service had taken part in the selfassessment process. Taking the views of people using the care service into account We observed the children to be confident and settled in their environment. Children were observed having a positive relationship with staff during their play. Some children were happy to talk to us about what they liked to do at nursery and involved us their play. They showed us the bird hide that had been created in the nursery and were exited to see the squirrel that had come to visit the garden. Children were enjoying a variety of experiences and activities throughout the session including indoor soft tennis with the Physical Education Specialist and a visit from a parent to talk about their job as part of the health and wellbeing topic. Taking carers' views into account We sent out eleven care standard questionnaires to the service to give to parents and all were completed and returned to us before the inspection. All page 11 of 30

parents indicated 'Strongly agree' to the statement that 'Overall, I am happy with the quality of care my child receives in this service'. Information and parents' comments from the questionnaires have been included in the report as appropriate. Some comments included:- 'Delighted with GHS Nursery. From the first day in August, my son has been extremely settled and happy to go to Nursery - he literally skips in - he loves it. The staff and surroundings are fantastic and I have no complaints whatsoever. My son has come on in leaps and bounds both behaviourally and socially. He is also learning loads without even realising it. His confidence has increased greatly and I believe he is getting a fantastic grounding which will stand him in great stead for P1 next August'. 'My daughter has settled so well at the nursery. There is an excellent balance between care and learning aspects and I have seen my daughter grow in confidence and develop new friendships in a short period of time'. 'The nursery and staff were exceptional in providing additional care and support to our daughter'. 'The nursery environment is great and effort has been made to engage children and parents. The staff are brilliant and have gained my trust. The environment is welcoming. Children are doing/learning a lot and coming back happy. Staff have also made a special effort to increase awareness about other cultures and that has been hugely appreciated. The only thing we miss in this nursery is the hot meals - fresh cooked organic, hot meals served to children daily - wish that could happen here too!!'. page 12 of 30

3 The inspection We looked at how the service performs against the following quality themes and statements. Here are the details of what we found. Quality Theme 1: Quality of Care and Support Grade awarded for this theme: 6 - Excellent Statement 3 We ensure that service users' health and wellbeing needs are met. Service Strengths At this inspection, we found that the performance of the service was excellent for this statement. We gathered evidence from the care standards questionnaires, the service's self assessment form, our observations and discussions throughout the inspection. We also looked at children's records, staff practice, medication records and observed the snack and lunchtime routines to assess this statement. We concluded that the service had appropriate systems in place to gather information from parents and to meet the health and welfare needs of the children effectively. Forms were completed when children started the service and included a record of children's name, date of birth, G.P details and emergency contacts. Allergy and dietary information was also sought. Ongoing communication took place through the use of daily diaries, parent/ teacher consultations twice a year, informal discussions at the end of the session between staff and parents. An accident and incident recording system was used to inform parents when something happened to their child and the actions taken by staff. Systems were in place for staff to use observations and photographs to record children's achievements. Electronic learning journals had been introduced and page 13 of 30

this meant that parents could access their child's learning information on-line and comment on this. Planning was responsive to children's interests and stage of development. A record of children's learning was displayed through the use of photographs, wall displays, children's 'all about me' files and floor books. A pictorial routine and the golden rules, helped children to be able to be independent and take responsibility for what was expected of them at nursery. This helped children to be able to make good decisions. Up, up and away parent/carer postcards were sent home to outline what children have learnt that term and the next steps for learning in literacy and numeracy. Floor books outlined children's experiences and learning and recorded children's opinions and feedback. Staff monitored children in their play and intervened appropriately to support and encourage children's independence. Staff knew the children in their care well and described the action they took to support their individual needs. Children were very confident in their environment and some engaged in conversation with us about their nursery and what they liked to do. The Education Psychologist was routinely involved in the nursery to assess children's needs as part of the school's Early Intervention Programme to identify support needed. Children also took part in Philosophy, Resilience and Thinking Skills learning to enhance their health and wellbeing to help to recognise their feelings and how they understand and respond to different situations. These experiences demonstrated that children were respected in the service with recognition that they all have their own unique personalities and individual needs. Systems were also in place to work in partnership with specialists to arrange referrals for support as appropriate. A child protection policy was in place and identified the responsibilities that the staff had to safeguard children in their care. Healthy eating was promoted in the nursery and the snack committee decided on the menu each week. All children had a turn at being involved in this as well as regular baking opportunities. The nursery were aware of the new nutritional guidance and food standards for early years childcare providers in Scotland - 'Setting the Table'. Children's dietary requirements were catered for. The menu was displayed in the foyer to share this information with parents. 'Snack chat' had been introduced for staff and children to talk about information about their individual needs and interests or any feedback they had. This information was page 14 of 30

recorded. A hydration centre meant that children could access drinking water throughout the session. The nursery took part in the national toothbrushing scheme and children brushed their teeth whilst at nursery. Staff followed the Child Smile Guidance 'National Standards for Nursery and School Toothbrushing programme'. We saw that children were encouraged to be independent in their routines and staff supported others who needed a gentle reminder of what to do next. Policies and procedures were in place to support this statement including infection control and child protection. These helped to inform the staff's work practice and helped ensure that children were kept safe. Staff were aware of the need for infection control. We saw that they helped support children to be healthy by reminding children to wash their hands after going to the toilet and prior to eating. The medication system had been reviewed and action taken to ensure that this was in line with best practice guidance 'Management of medication in daycare of children and childminding services'. This included a record of expiry dates and all medication was now reviewed regularly with parents as part of their personal plan information. This ensured that the information was up to date and the care plans still relevant. The school matron was responsible for children's medication in the nursery and she liaised with nursery staff as appropriate. Nursery staff had reviewed their records for children who had known allergies or dietary requirements to outline the action to be taken if necessary. The wraparound care team had and alternative medication storage system and allergy information records as their service operated outwith the school matron's hours. In the 11 care standards questionnaires we received all parents indicated 'Strongly agree' or 'Agree' to the statements:- - My child regularly gets fresh air and energetic physical play. - My child can experience and choose from a balanced range of activities. - The staff ask for my child's views and about the activities and outings and use them to plan future activities. - Staff share information about my child's learning and development with me and, where appropriate, my child. page 15 of 30

- Staff regularly assess my child's learning and development and use this to plan their next steps. Some comments from the questionnaires included:- 'Since he began in August, his time at Heriot's Nursery has been of huge benefit to my son's development, learning and general demeanour. The relationships he has formed with other children and staff are so healthy and positive, he skips in with joy each morning. Under their care and tutelage, he has matured, has grown in confidence and is generally thriving. As a parent, it has been a pleasure to watch him blossom into a happy wee chap at nursery'. 'I believe the education my child is receiving is truly excellent and have noticed significant leaps in his literacy and numeracy, as well as his positive interactions with others and general confidence and happiness. There is a very happy and purposeful atmosphere in the nursery and the staff are more than happy to discuss my child's progress and address any concerns. Individual approaches to settling in and overcoming any difficulties that arise are handled sensitively and successfully'. Areas for improvement The provider should continue to monitor and maintain the excellent quality of care. The provider should ensure it is rigorous in identifying any areas for improvement and implementing action plans to address these. This included reviewing systems to:- - Enhance how accident/incident information would be shared with parents if children go onto wraparound care. - Monitor and record that where children attend wraparound care, their personal plan information is also included in the nursery regular reviews. - Continue to evidence the use of SHANARRI wellbeing indicators to demonstrate how these are met for nursery children. Grade 6 - Excellent Number of requirements - 0 Number of recommendations - 0 page 16 of 30

Quality Theme 2: Quality of Environment Grade awarded for this theme: 6 - Excellent Statement 2 We make sure that the environment is safe and service users are protected. Service Strengths We found that the performance of the service was excellent for this statement. We looked at the environment and viewed risk assessments and staff practice. There were various policies and procedures in place to support this statement about health and safety, risk assessment and infection control. The entrance to the premises was secure with parents and visitors having to be given access to the building by staff. A record of visitors was kept and visitors were not left unsupervised with children. These systems helped ensure children were kept safe. A television in the foyer outlined news about the service and pictures of children taking part in activities. We found the playroom to be suitably ventilated, well-lit and well maintained. The kitchen area was clean and this was monitored regularly as part of the quality assurance systems. A gate at the entrance to the kitchen meant that children could not access this area. Any maintenance issues were reported to the school for action to be taken and an audit trail was kept. This showed a commitment to the upkeep of the building and resources. Children helped tidy up and were encouraged to care for their environment. The outdoor play area and access to other school buildings provided a variety of energetic and physical play experiences for children. This included yoga and soft tennis. The playroom was set up to provide children with the opportunity to be involved in a variety of activities in line with the Curriculum for Excellence. This was set out to make best use of the available space and were well used by children who were able to move about freely. Displays were attractive and there was a high page 17 of 30

standard of equipment. We saw that children were confident in their use of technology in the nursery including the I-pad and smart board. Staff supported children to identify and minimise risks during their play such as how to use the tools on the wood work bench safely and the potential hazards. A Health and Safety Office and the Early Years Depute assessed the environment regularly with a daily assessment also carried out by staff. Staff described how they assessed the environment and about the precautions taken to minimise any risks identified. Written risk assessment information had now been developed for the individual areas of the nursery. In the 11 care standards questionnaires, all parents indicated 'Strongly agree' or 'Agree' to the following statements:- - The service is a safe, secure, hygienic, smoke free, pleasant and stimulating environment. - There is enough space for the children to play and get involved in a range of activities. - The service has a suitable range of equipment, toys and materials for the children. Some comments received through the questionnaires included:- 'I cannot praise the nursery more highly. He is so happy going in each day and has the opportunity for free play in so may different activities in addition to group time where he is starting learn some letters. He is totally engaged and comes home with different stories and songs everyday. The nursery has already been on several trips which have been a hit'. 'The nursery is a very happy place with a huge number of activities every day. The staff are kind, caring but in control of the children'. Areas for improvement The provider should continue to monitor and maintain the excellent quality of care. The provider should ensure it is rigorous in identifying any areas for improvement and implementing action plans to address these. This includes continuing to risk assess areas used by the children such as the nursery page 18 of 30

building, wraparound care rooms or school facilities. A record of any identified issues have been addressed/minimised should continue to be kept. Grade 6 - Excellent Number of requirements - 0 Number of recommendations - 0 page 19 of 30

Quality Theme 3: Quality of Staffing Grade awarded for this theme: 6 - Excellent Statement 3 We have a professional, trained and motivated workforce which operates to National Care Standards, legislation and best practice. Service Strengths At this inspection, we found that the performance of the service was excellent for this statement. The service had a range policies and procedures which supported the professional approach taken by staff. The recruitment process included candidates completing an application form and a Curriculum Vitae to outline their relevant experience and skills to assess their suitability for the post they applied for. Two references and a Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) check were sought prior to successful candidates starting their post. These safer recruitment processes helped further safeguard children in the service. A staff handbook and induction programme included information about child protection procedures and GIRFEC. This meant that staff had this relevant information as they awaited specific training courses. Nursery staff and wraparound care staff working with the nursery age children were registered with either the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) or the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). The SSSC are the organisation who regulate care staff and decide on the level of qualifications for each post. The GTC is the organisation who regulate registered teachers. Training opportunities were offered to staff. An overview of staff training was kept. This included Building the Ambition training and the impact of how the nursery engaged with this document. This showed a commitment from the service to ensure that staff kept up to date with best practice and were trained effectively to support children's individual care needs. page 20 of 30

A Junior School Professional Review and Development booklet for staff outlined key information. This included having an annual review of staff looking at their strengths, targets and action planned. Reflective questions asked staff to consider their practice against the GTC professional standards. The management team confirmed that this document would be developed for staff registered with SSSC. Two observations were also carried out to assess staff practice. We observed that staff interaction with children in the nursery was of a high quality. Staff knew the children in their care well and supported them in a respectful way during their play as appropriate. They used appropriate questions and general discussion to extend play opportunities and learning experiences. Children were clearly comfortable in approaching staff when they needed support. Photographs of staff were displayed in the foyer and this helped parents to know who was taking care of their child and who to contact as appropriate. Regular staff meetings were held to share information and inform staff about new policies. Staff had an opportunity to give their views through such meetings. Staff rotated their roles and responsibilities each week to ensure that everyone was informed of different aspects of the service and to plan for specific areas of the environment. New nursery teachers attended a network of meetings through the City of Edinburgh Council with other new teachers. Staff kept a professional reading record outlining how this has then had an impact on the service delivered. In the 11 care standard questionnaires returned to us, all parents indicated 'Strongly agree' to the following statements:- - I am confident that the staff have the skills and experience to care for my child and support their learning and development. - My child appears happy and confident with the staff. - The staff treat my child fairly and with respect. - I am confident that there are always enough staff in the service to provide a good quality of care. - I am confident that the staff will protect my child from harm, abuse, bullying and neglect. page 21 of 30

Areas for improvement The provider should continue to monitor and maintain the excellent quality of care. The provider should ensure it is rigorous in identifying any areas for improvement and implementing action plans to address these. This included:- - Developing the Personal Review and Development policy for staff registered with SSSC and to provide them with information about the 'Step into Leadership' programme. - Continuing to monitor and ensure that any staff working with or supporting the nursery children in the nursery or wraparound care facility are registered with the SSSC or other professional body. Grade 6 - Excellent Number of requirements - 0 Number of recommendations - 0 page 22 of 30

Quality Theme 4: Quality of Management and Leadership Grade awarded for this theme: 6 - Excellent Statement 4 We use quality assurance systems and processes which involve service users, carers, staff and stakeholders to assess the quality of service we provide. Service Strengths At this inspection, we found that the performance of the service was excellent for this statement. We looked at how the quality of the service was assessed and the processes used to involve service users, carers, staff and stakeholders. A complaints procedure was in place and displayed on the noticeboard. This meant that parents were informed about who to contact in the event of a concern. The management team described and demonstrated the quality assurance systems and processes used to assess and support and maintain improvements to the nursery. These included:- - Having a calendar of quality assurance checks including ensuring relevant information and polices were displayed for parents, observations of the playroom, monitoring planning and having an overview of the electronic learning journals. - The Early Years Depute having a designated half day in the nursery each week. - Parent Partnership meetings being held four times a year with questions and answer session. - Regular survey monkeys for parents to seek their views. page 23 of 30

- Newsletters to share information with families. - Sharing playroom practice between staff and other nurseries to look at key aspects of learning environments. - Regular nursery team meetings and observations of the nursery sessions. - Weekly management team meetings. - A Standards, Quality and Improvement Plan was completed about the service on an annual basis as the nursery were in partnership with the City of Edinburgh to deliver pre-school education. This document outlined key areas for improvement and the priorities for the year which was shared with parents. A Quality Improvement Officer from the Council visited the nursery to assess and support the service as part of this partnership agreement. - The welcome booklet was due to be updated for the new 16/17 school year to enhance information for parents about child protection, complaints procedures and medication system. - The Head of Junior school also met with the wraparound care manager regularly to discuss and monitor this part of the service. - Senior School pupils were timetabled for slots throughout the day to help in the nursery. This supported links between the nursery and the school. The nursery children clearly enjoyed having the pupils in their nursery and involved them in their play as appropriate. - The nursery demonstrated that they had continually self-evaluated their service and had assessed what they thought they did well and promoted sector leading practice. This included having a fully qualified and experienced staff team of two nursery teachers and two qualified practitioners. To support the transition into school, one nursery teacher moved up with the children each year on a rotational basis. In the 11 care standard questionnaires returned to us, all parents indicated 'Strongly agree' to the following statement:- - The service has involved me and my child in developing the service, for example for ideas and feedback. We also spoke to several parents when they arrived to collect their child from nursery. They were complimentary about the service and their child's experiences. page 24 of 30

We concluded that through self evaluation and quality assurance, the service had a clear vision for continuous development to support and enhance outcomes for children. Support systems from other professionals in the school meant that any issues or suggestions for improvement were reflected upon and addressed quickly. Areas for improvement The provider should continue to monitor and maintain the excellent quality of care. The provider should ensure it is rigorous in identifying any areas for improvement and implementing action plans to address these. This includes enhancing the quality assurance systems to include the assessment of the wraparound care facility and outcomes for children who attend this after the nursery session has ended. Grade 6 - Excellent Number of requirements - 0 Number of recommendations What the service has done to meet any requirements we made at our last inspection Previous requirements 1. The provider must ensure that the practice for the administration of medication is reviewed and improved in order to make proper provision for the health and wellbeing of the children. This is in order to comply with: The Social Care and Social Work Improvement Scotland (Requirements for Care Services) Regulations SSI 2011/210 Regulation 4(1)(a) Welfare of users. Reference should also be made to the Care Inspectorate's best practice health guidance document 'The Management of Medication in Daycare and Childminding Services' which can be found on our website at page 25 of 30

Timescale for implementation: within 14 days of receipt of this report. This requirement was made on 23 January 2013 The medication policy had been updated in line with best practice. The school matron was responsible for supporting medication and the completion of documentation for nursery children. Systems were now in place to record children's needs and their medication needs. Met - Within Timescales 2. The provider must review the use of children's registers in order to ensure that all registers maintained accurately reflect the number of children in attendance. This is in order to comply with Social Care and Social Work Improvement Scotland (Requirements for Care Services) Regulations 2011 (SSI 2011/210) regulation 4 (1) (a) to make proper provision for the health welfare and safety of service users. Timescale: with immediate effect. This requirement was made on 23 January 2013 we saw that an accurate register was kept on the premises and this information was passed onto the office for the electronic system. Met - Within Timescales 5 What the service has done to meet any recommendations we made at our last inspection Previous recommendations 1. It is recommended that management should review the procedures for serving food to ensure a safe environment for children. National Care Standards Early Education and Childcare up to the Age of 16: Standard 2 - A Safe Environment This recommendation was made on 23 January 2013 page 26 of 30

Children brought packed lunches into the service. Staff provided children with any crockery that they required if these had not been brought in with them. Table cloths were used along with children's own individual place mats that they had made. These were then cleaned after use and helped minimise any cross contamination. We have assessed that this recommendation has been met. 2. It is recommended that the provider should ensure that all accidents and incidents are appropriately recorded in the nursery for parents to sign in order to maintain the safety and wellbeing of the children. National Care Standards early education and childcare up to the age of 16. Standard 3: Health and wellbeing This recommendation was made on 23 January 2013 A system was in place to record accidents and incidents and parents were asked to countersign this information at the end of the session. This posed a difficulty for children who went onto attend wraparound care as parents were not in attendance at the end of the nursery session. Staff telephoned parents if there had been head bumps and the daily diary system was used. Staff continued to reflect on this process to ensure communication was maintained. We have assessed that this recommendation has been met. 3. It is recommended that the provider should ensure that procedures are correctly implemented by staff and monitored by management. These should include: (i) Appropriate storage of foods to ensure they are kept in a fresh condition; (ii) Putting labels on storage boxes containing foods which are not in their original packaging and noting on the label what the box contains and the 'use by' date - these dates should be checked before use and out of date items disposed of; National Care Standards early education and childcare up to the age of 16. Standard 3: Health and wellbeing. This recommendation was made on 23 January 2013 We found that action had been taken to address the above issues and this was now part of the quality assurance system for regular monitoring. We have assessed that this recommendation has been met. 4. The version of the child protection policy and procedure displayed in the nursery and provided for sixth form pupils assisting in the nursery should be reviewed and further developed. page 27 of 30

This is in order to comply with: National Care Standards Early Education and Childcare up to the age of 16- Standard 14 A well managed service. This recommendation was made on 23 January 2013 The child protection policy had been updated and was on display. We discussed the wording of this policy to ensure further clarity of the process. The management team had developed individual cards for pupils and staff to clearly outline the importance of passing on any concerns to the Head of Junior School who was the designated child protection officer. We have assessed that this recommendation has been met. 5. Cleaning schedules should cover all areas of the nursery to which the nursery staff have responsibility and they should be audited by management. Cleaning products such as liquid soap used by children within the nursery should reflect national guidance for Scotland relating to infection prevention and control. National Care Standards early education and childcare up to the age of 16. Standard14: Well managed service. Standard 2: A safe environment. Reference should also be made to the best practice health guidance document 'Infection Prevention and Control in Childcare Settings (Day Care and Childminding Settings) This recommendation was made on 23 January 2013 We saw that the environment was clean and well maintained. Designated cleaning staff visited the service during the children's lunchtime routine to assess and clean specific areas of the building. The kitchen area was clean and this area was regularly monitored through the nursery's quality assurance systems. Liquid soap used by children was not anti-bacterial as advised though infection control guidance. Therefore we have deemed that this recommendation has been met. 6 Complaints No complaints have been upheld, or partially upheld, since the last inspection. page 28 of 30
