There was a job available stocking shelves and sweeping at $0.15 an hour. The starting salary for a young seaman in the Navy was $21 per month. I thought that was better. Roy left his home in Nebraska, but says, I didn t fall for the join the Navy and see the world. His first duty station was aboard the USS Oklahoma. It was in dry dock in Bremerton, Washington, at the time. After a shake down to Vancouver, British Columbia, the crew set sail for Pearl Harbor, Roy and his wife Barbara on their wedding day. Hawaii. Roy spent the next three years on maneuvers with the fleet in the Hawaiian area of the Pacific. Roy remembers exactly where he was on the morning of December 7, He was aft when the first of 9 torpedoes hit the ship. We were shocked at being attacked. It was a short period of time. In less than two hours, it was all over, Roy recalls. The battered Oklahoma turned over in only 11 minutes. Roy dogged down eight men in the aft steering section. After 30 hours, those men, and more, were saved when they were rescued from the hull of the ship. The crew of Roy Carter the Oklahoma lost 429 crewmen. Over 2000 people perished in the attack on Pearl Harbor. Roy was initially sent to the sub-tender the USS Pelican. The Navy reconstructed my record and saw I was on the list for enlisted pilot training, says Roy. He was transferred to Pearl Harbor s naval air station. Once his training was complete, he began flying planes in the Navy, working his way up to the PB4Y-2 patrol bomber. Roy flew 12 hour shifts from England on patrol for enemy submarines. Roy had married his lovely wife Barbara before he was stationed in Europe. When the war was over, he wanted to fly for the naval air TURN TO NAVY PAGE 2 Roy was serving aboard the Battleship USS Oklahoma during the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, May 2018 The Sherwood Like to Know 1
2 Navy: Roy has appreciation for all who serve Continued from Page 1 transport service. The Navy did accept his request. However, when the orders came for another tour in the Pacific, Roy decided it was time to leave active duty after seven years of service. He stayed in the Navy Reserve retiring from that after 22 years. Post Navy, he and Barbara moved to Illinois where Roy earned an engineering degree. He worked for an insurance company for several years. I was an expert in fire protection. Then I finally opened my own business, he says. His family grew to include their two daughters and one son. When it was time to retire, he and Barbara stayed in Wisconsin. They liked spending winters in Texas, but eventually decided they d rather be settled in one location. Roy fondly remembered his time aboard the USS Oklahoma when it was in drydock in Bremerton. They both liked the area and they decided to make Sequim their permanent home no more winters in Texas. As Memorial Day approaches, Roy is glad there is a day to honor America s military service members. He s one of many in his family to serve in the armed forces. Roy s older brother was also in the Navy during World War II and his younger brother served in the Korean War. His son was in the military during the Vietnam War. He has a grandson who is currently serving as a ranger in the Army airborne division. I don t think you can do enough to show appreciation, Roy says. I m glad there is a day to honor all military members. Government currently issuing revised Medicare cards The government is mailing newly designed Medicare cards to the 59 million people in the federal health insurance program. The new card removes the member s Social Security number and replaces it with a new, randomly generated 11-digit Medicare number. This reduces the potential for identity theft if the card is lost or stolen. Cards will be sent to Medicare recipients or their Powers of Attorney on a rolling basis over a 12- month period, ending in April Washington State residents won t begin receiving their cards until June at the earliest. Medicare will never ask you for your personal information or charge you a fee to get your new Medicare card. Scam artists may try to get personal information (like your current Medicare number) by contacting you about your new card. If someone asks you for your information, for money, or threatens to cancel your health benefits if you don t share your Afterhours Bingo gives all a chance to be a winner Every evening, there s a new Afterhours Bingo number posted on the activity boards around Sherwood. It s an evening game that s been going on for several years now, says Activity Director Tanya Kerr. Residents get their three bingo cards from the activity department and play this blackout bingo game. After dinner I look for the new number on the board to mark my card, says 3-time winner player Peggy Broemeling. When a couple numbers Peggy Broemeling marks off one more number on her After hours bingo cards. are left, then you re anxious for them to call the right number. It s fun to say I won! she says. When players get a blackout, they bring their winning card to the activity department. The winner currently receive a $5 prize, but the department is looking into other prizes that might be fun or useful to the residents. People can get their bingo cards from the activity department. They d like to see more people join in the game. Play along with us, says Tanya. personal information, hang up and report the call to the Medicare officials at MEDICARE ( ). You do not need to take any action to get your new Medicare card. Just make sure your mailing address is up-to-date. If your address needs to be corrected, contact Social Security at or check your online Social Security account at Health care providers are aware of the changes. They ll continue to take your old card, but they will need the updated number after the new card arrives. When you receive your new card, be sure to destroy your old card. 3 Nursing staff strives to provide best care in a family environment The nursing staff is one of the things that sets Sherwood apart from other assisted living facilities. We offer a unique community with nurses that are overseeing the well being of each resident, says Resident Care Manager Cathie Diem. They live here, so we are very aware when there s something different. says Cathie. There s a sense of security in knowing we re here for that. We are here to watch out for their best interests whether that s their physical, emotional, or spiritual health. Marilyn Newton has been connected with Sherwood as a nurse for 34 years. There s been quite a few changes to Sherwood over those years. She was here while there was nursing care and a Medicare wing. Marilyn took some time to raise her family, and has been here for over 20 years. This is her niche in nursing, and she wouldn t want to be anywhere else. I love geriatric nursing. I love the family environment here, she says. Audrey Heatherington is glad for the services that the nurses provide through the day. To have the help is wonderful, she says. They are all very kind. They smile and are friendly, which I really like. There s extra touches that they ll add that brighten Audrey s day. Marilyn will do things like bring me a robe or cup of coffee. While those moments are great, Audrey knows she can rest assured that the nurses will be there when she has a medical need. They ve rushed me to the doctor. They ve cared for my ankle. The nurses go out of their way to be pleasing and helpful. One of the primary duties of the nurses is to oversee and administer the medications to the residents. They do skin care and wound dressing. They assess the situation when a resident takes a fall. When there Nurses Marilyn Newton and Melodee Moores enjoy chatting with Ethel Stratton while they take her blood pressure. They enjoy their time interacting with the residents. is a change in health, the nurses are there to do an assessment to get them the right medical treatment in a timely fashion. We re there as a triangle of care for the resident, the doctor and the family, says Marilyn. Nurses look at the bigger picture, behind the symptoms of what might be going on, when it s time to follow up with the doctor. The residents are more than patients to the nursing staff. Their dedication and compassion for the residents make me very proud to work with this team, says Cathie. They are all my favorite folks, says Marilyn. You don t get that in hospital nursing. They have such a great sense of humor. One of Marilyn s favorite times of the day is interacting with the residents during the lunch hour. The dining room can be interesting and quite comical, she says with a smile. TUESDAY, MAY 8 FROM 10 A.M. 6 (Left) Bill Thomas and Retta Harris have pool noodles, and they aren t afraid to use em for an exercise game, that is. (Left) It s official. Everybody loves Dasher. Lee Raymond is not immune from his puppy cuteness and had no choice but to cuddle him. (Above) Sheila Cope s friends always have a great time coming in to spin some yarn and spin a tale or two, as well. (Left) Audrey Creary loves to do puzzles. She finished this one off in record time! Activity Director Tanya Kerr As I sit and marvel over my new puppy, Dasher, I paws and think about my first days here at Sherwood and all the lives that have filled my heart with love and joy since. Many have taught me not to take myself so seriously, while others have taught me to be thankful for every day that I am walking and talking. I have learned that smiles are as infectious as the flu many of us encountered the first days of 2018, and that a single smile from another person can lift my spirits for the rest of the day. I lost my mom in 2014, but found her here in many of the residents, pianos, nooks & crannies of this community. I heard the songs she sang to me while playing her organ and the stories she and my grandparents would share with me as I grew. I enjoyed knowing that she was watching over me as I interacted with the residents, employees and volunteers. I was comforted in knowing she was with me in this journey. But, due to the untimely passing of my husband this year, it is time for me to start another journey, one which allows me to support my household on my own and grow in a career that I started many years ago. My experiences here have been so profoundly heartwarming with all the love and support I have received from residents, my fellow employees and our volunteers. I will always cherish my experiences here and getting to know everyone. While my employment as the Activity Director has come to an end, I will still be in, along with Dasher and Lola, to visit everyone. Until we meet again, Tanya May 2018 The Sherwood Like to Know 6
