ASET 1977 present; CSET; American Epilepsy Society; National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA) an ASET officer. As a leader in the workplace and with volunteer organizations, I have learned that effective working groups need shared successes. An effective leader allows opportunity for all views to be considered, and promotes resolution by consensus. A group commitment to an action plan and a shared understanding of the plan s rationale can result in shared success. Empowerment by ownership yields a group process not dependent on any one member. officer? Leading involves the ability to envision the future, to establish goals that define that vision and to create the roadmap to the goals. I have the ability to plan strategically, define goals, establish priorities and engage the entire team to accomplish the goals. What are your goals for ASET if elected? I wish to continue to support the ASET mission to promote professional excellence and to establish a well-recognized professional identity; to strengthen liaison with industry partners, and close the gap between education and new technologies; to promote END technology as a profession that in turn, can expand our workforce, and increase the membership. I am committed to keeping communication lines open; to be available and visible; and to encourage volunteer participation. can/should the Society take? We are experiencing a strong demographic shift with boomers leaving the workforce, resulting in a shortage of qualified workers. As an organization, we need to promote the image of the END profession so that we can recruit highly qualified motivated individuals into the END workforce. In a climate of economic uncertainty the ability to provide opportunities to update the education of the technologist will ensure that our membership continues to find value in our organization. I have had the benefit of a variety of experience through my previous employment in hospitals, clinics, equipment/product sales and most recently in private practice. I have had a well-rounded career and solid background in all areas of neurodiagnostics. I have been in the field for more than 25 years and formed valuable lasting relationships through networking with others. I have been active on both a local and national level and participate with excitement and enthusiasm. I served two terms as president of the Indiana Society of Electroneurodiagnostics. During my term as president, we experienced financial hardship and through volunteers and hard work were able to offer inexpensive and even free courses to our membership. I served as a lecture chair and board member of the Texas Society of Electroneurodiagnostics. I have been very active with ASET. I spent several years in hospital management before starting a successful private practice nine years ago. I have had to address governmental, medical-legal, reimbursement, operational, budget and personnel issues. I have to build and maintain relationships not only with patients, but also with employees, hospital administrations, physicians, surgeons, and other allied health personnel. I am an active member of the Better Business Bureau and last year my company was awarded the Greater Dallas Business Ethics Award. My business experience could prove very useful in these tough financial times. officer? I have integrity. I am dedicated, hard working and have the ability to listen and problem solve. I am easy going, flexible and get along well with others. I am thankful to ASET for helping me network and develop my technical and leadership skills. I look forward to any opportunity to give back. I have not only been active in the field as a technologist, but dedicated the past 13 years of my career to education at local, regional and national levels. I served on the ASET Board of Trustees from 2001 to I have served two times as the IOM course director at the ASET annual meetings in 2000 and I have lectured for ASET every year for the past 10 years. I have served on several ASET committees and currently serve as chair of the ASET Education Committee. I have a successful private business and have maintained an ethical practice in a difficult climate. What are your goals for ASET if elected? My goals if elected will be to meet the ever changing challenges faced by our profession. There are several issues that we are faced with today that need to be addressed, such as maintaining while increasing membership, providing national recognition, taking a more aggressive action towards licensure, providing affordable access to education despite lack of employer funding and the financial crisis. There are and will continue to be changes in healthcare brought about by the new presidential administration and we need to monitor the impact it will have. I recently found out that our liability insurance rates through ASET s recommended carrier have tripled. There are a lot of issues that need to be monitored and addressed. The membership depends on ASET to keep them abreast of current events that have an impact on our profession and respond appropriately. can/should the Society take? The financial crisis and loss of educational support from employers is having an effect on our Society and us as individuals. We need to tide through these financial times as an organization by making sound decisions and continue to make education available at as little cost as possible to the membership. We need to join forces and strengthen our relationship with other organizations. We have seen the savings to ASET already by holding joint meetings with other organizations. We need to keep abreast of the changes that are being brought about by the new presidential administration and how it will impact our profession. The role and direction ASET takes in any issue should be determined by the membership. I believe it is the responsibility of the board and officers to carry out the goals and wishes of the ASET members. Brian Markley, BS, R. EEG/EP T., R. NCS T. Technical Manager The Neurology Center, PA Silver Spring, MD Technical Manager, The Neurology Center, P.A., 2004 present; Neurophysiology Supervisor, The Neurology Center, P.A., ; END Technician, The Neurology Center, P.A., ; Medical Triage Tech, U.S. Army, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, United States Military Academy, ; BS, Washington and Lee University, Capital Region END Society of Technologists president, ; ASET Course Speaker, 2003; ASET Board of Trustees, 2005 present; ASET Interest Section leader, 2004 present; AJET article, 2007; NCS On-line Curriculum Development Task Force Chair, 2009 present. Maureen Berkely Award, ASET 3

4 an ASET officer. My work on the board of Trustees these past four years has helped me come to an understanding of both the challenges and opportunities that exist for ASET. I continue to be inspired by the dedication I see in my colleagues throughout the Society. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to develop leadership and communications skills which I believe are crucial for the President-Elect position. officer? I believe that my communications, leadership and management background will be valuable in this position. I have in my time serving on the board become more knowledgeable of the breadth of the Electroneurodiagnostic field. It is important that the leadership of the Society seek to serve all of the membership. What are your goals for ASET if elected? My goals if elected are to continue to promote educational efforts, to seek to expand and retain membership, and to advocate for END technologists. As the health care field undergoes transformation as we all know it must, it is important that ASET be there to advocate for our membership. I also think it is important for the Society to continue to strive to expand membership. We need to reach out to those in the END field who are not currently involved. Last but not least, ASET has a well-earned reputation for excellent education. This I believe is our most important resource and greatest opportunity. There are other areas of our mission that depend on the response and actions of others. The only limit to our development of our educational resources is our own efforts. I want to see the Society build on the tremendous gains made in recent years in the area of on-line education. can/should the Society take? The impending demographic changes in the U.S. will mandate change in the healthcare system. Government advocacy will become more important as time goes by. Being organized and involved will be crucial to our interests being protected given our size. We have to continue to monitor advances and changes in our field and keep the membership aware. ASET may also have a role in the integration of END data into electronic medical record systems. CANDIDATE PROFILE FOR SECRETARY-TREASURER Kathy Johnson, R. EEG/EP T., RPSGT Manager Neurophysiology St. Mary s Medical Center Huntington, WV Manager, Neurophysiology / Regional Sleep Center, St. Mary s Medical Center, Huntington, WV, 1990 present; Senior Technologist, Surgical Neurology, Inc., Huntington, WV, ; EEG Technician, Dr. Thomas J. Holbrook, Huntington, WV, On-the-job training in EEG technology Marshall University, Huntington, WV Certificate, Atlanta School of Sleep Medicine, Atlanta, GA 1993 AS Electroencephalography, California College for Health Sciences 1999 ASET Secretary-Treasurer, 2007 present; ASET Board of Trustees, ; West Virginia Sleep Society president, 2003 present; ASET liaison to AAST, AASM, BRPT; ASET Special Interest Section co- Leader, Polysomnography; member of various ASET committees; speaker at various ASET and AAST meetings. ASET, AAST, West Virginia Sleep Society an ASET officer. Managing a department has, and continues, to challenge me as an individual but these challenges are a continual learning experience. Serving as the primary organizer and president of the West Virginia Sleep Society has given me insight into the workings of a small non-profit organization. As Secretary-Treasurer of ASET, I have learned even more about ASET as a business and the difficulties which are encountered on a daily basis by our members, the officers and board, and the staff. officer? I have learned that ASET is gifted with talented volunteers who are passionate about their profession and that this passion sometimes results in conflicts and opposing points of view. I believe I am able to effectively listen to multiple sides of an issue and make up my own mind as well as help opposing opinions come to consensus. I believe that sometimes I am able to bring some clarity back to the basic issues under discussion when the waters become muddied. I am fortunate to be at a point in my life where my personal responsibilities allow me to have the time to devote to ASET and the duties entrusted to the board. I am able to make myself available to colleagues who have problems or questions and have always done my best to help those who contact me, whether it means sharing a policy, a technique or just listening. What are your goals for ASET if elected? I have always felt that I represent the little guy, namely the tech who was trained on the job or who is working in the small lab with only one or two techs, even though my own lab has grown. I want to be sure we don t lose sight of those members who work in isolated situations without the support or resources of a large medical center or university. I want to encourage new (or not-so-new) members to volunteer their time and talents to make ASET all that it can be. I have learned that while we may set goals, these can often be moving targets and we must stay flexible enough to change our goals as necessary. can/should the Society take? In the current difficult economic times, our field has the unique challenge of finding ways to fill the current (and increasing) shortage of trained technologists. This is not something ASET can do in isolation. We must forge alliances with all of those with a vested interest and be sure we are working in the best interests of our members and our patients. Licensure for END techs has been hovering in the background for many years but is moving to the forefront in many states. While ASET cannot make the decision for those in the field, we need to be ready and able to support our membership in their chosen path toward occupational regulation should it be desirable or necessary. As we have seen over the past 20+ years, the field of END is constantly evolving and transforming itself and ASET must be ready to evolve with it. 4

5 CANDIDATE PROFILES FOR BOARD OF TRUSTEES Sara Batson, R. EEG T., RPSGT EEG Technologist Illinois Neurological Institute OSF St Francis Medical Center Peoria, IL can/should the Society take? I feel the change that is taking place in our profession that ASET should be attentive to is licensure. I do not agree with the decision that was passed in Wyoming regarding EEG technologists. Given the current economic state which involves growing numbers of job losses and insurance loss or changes, I feel that as a Society we have an obligation to protect our fellow technologists and the jobs they perform, so that the same situation does not happen in other states. I believe ASET is doing this. If given the opportunity to be a board member I would like to continue to stay focused on job protection and as a Society assist in anyway needed within our career field to insure we have another 50 years to celebrate the future of END. Furthermore, I am very interested in the advance education ASET is setting forth in order to create the ability to obtain a BA in our field. I possess the following qualities that attribute to making me a good officer or board member: Organizational skills, the ability to communicate well with others, an outgoing personality, and dedication. What are your goals for ASET if elected? My goals as a board member for ASET are to assist the Society in any way I can. I am new to the field and I want to be involved. I am passionate about the tests we perform as technologists daily. I enjoy continually learning. I realize that one day the current leaders in our field will not be in their positions due to career advancement and/or retirement. As a new technologist I inspire to be mentored. I want to assist and be a part of keeping the Society continuing in a forward direction for many more years to come. Michael Bechel, R. EEG/EP T., R. My role is often as a trainer and educator and I believe I have the skills to listen and form solutions in a variety of educational and working conditions. board member? The qualities that I bring to ASET are dedication to the END field through patient care, a passion for quality through education and understanding, and a vision for professionalism for all involved in END. We have a long and storied history. I hope my dedication and passion encourages the next generation of END professionals to strive for excellence. My experience, abilities to listen, problem solve and compromise will be valuable in my role as an ASET board trustee. What are your goals for ASET if elected? My goals are to continue to promote professionalism within END by continuing to increase membership, assist in greater educational opportunities (to encourage more people to enter the field as well as providing continuing education), and advocate state licensure wherever possible. can/should the Society take? I believe the goal of ASET is to represent its members in the community. We need to enhance the credibility of our members by marketing our field to the community and pursue licensure at every opportunity. ASET is the leading organization for our field. We need to listen to our members, assess situations and move forward to promote our membership. Melissa Bettinger, R. EEG T. In 2006, I was promoted to the position of manager of University Hospital s Long Term Monitoring Unit and oversee its daily operations and provide in-service education for nursing staff, medical students, residents and fellows as to departmental functions. board member? I am an honest, dedicated, hardworking individual who likes to get the job done. I remember when I completed my ABRET exam I received a letter from ASET inviting me to share my knowledge with others. At this time I feel ready to make that commitment. What are your goals for ASET if elected? One goal I have is to promote a greater awareness of neurodiagnostics at a local, state and federal level. I am employed by New York State and my credentials are not recognized by my employer. can/should the Society take? I feel we should take an active role in support of licensure for the profession. Kimberley Butler, R. NCS T., R. Awarded Clinical Instructor appointment to the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, 1997 present. ASET, AAET an ASET board member. My previous experience includes acting as an AAET board member followed by serving four years as the Examination Chair for the R. NCS T. exam. Both of these roles helped me gain both organizational and interpersonal skills. I have been able to apply these skills both in my professional life and my personal life. In my professional career I have learned the importance of leading by example. As a manager, I have learned that the careful delegation of responsibilities to those working under us can never be underestimated and the time it takes to compliment a job well done is always well spent. board member? I feel my prior experience lends well to working in a team like fashion. Equally if not more important, I am very goal oriented. I also feel I follow through on tasks which are delegated to me, in a reliable, timely fashion. What are your goals for ASET if elected? I consider myself very education oriented. I am continually impressed with ASET s innovative on-line learning programs. If I am elected to the Board of Trustees, this would be my mission. That every technologist, no matter where they work, no matter what their circumstances, have access to high quality education materials. Equally important is that they have access to the support they need to continue educating themselves. Many of us in the END field are largely self-educated so we know this is an obtainable goal if formal education is not an option. Those of us who have many years of experience as technologists as well many years of teaching experience should actively participate in such roles. can/should the Society take? With the future of health care changing so rapidly, we must look toward shaping the future of our field. When I go to meetings and teach, I come across some very bright, young technologists who are trying very hard not only to gain knowledge but also to be innovative in our field. Not only must we keep these young technologists motivated, we must also work to educate our healthcare systems administrators about the importance of having qualified technologists on staff whose competence has been demonstrated through the registry process. Although we must adapt to the changes inevitable in the field of health care, we also have to make sure that the mission of our predecessors continues into the future. Linda Kelly, BS, R. ASET, AAET an ASET board member. I believe my years working in the END profession, specifically as a department manager and teacher, have taught me a great deal. As a result, I have grown passionate about my work and take pride in the simple principle of performing the tasks of my job well. I also take pride in my servant leadership style by which I try to implement the ideals of organization, compassion and stewardship to many of my daily tasks. I try to convey this high level of commitment to others in hopes to influence their performance. I think job satisfaction stems from intrinsic rewards and that those types of rewards are a great source of motivation. I ve also taken an interest, through my role as an educator, in helping people harness their efforts and enjoy helping them to reach their individual goals. I have been fortunate to be mentored by dedicated professionals who expended the same kind of energy to help me. 7

8 board member? I possess the qualities of honesty, integrity, and the ability to truly listen to and learn from other people. I believe that being able to treat people with this kind of sincere respect is an essential trait that results in successful personal and professional relationships. I believe challenges are best met with positive attitudes and a strong work ethic. I also place very high value on teamwork. Perhaps this is evidenced by a reward I received known as the In Service award from my co-workers at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. This award reflects a commitment to patients and their families as well as to colleagues and was a huge honor to receive because I was nominated by my peers. What are your goals for ASET if elected? I agree with the goals and objectives set forth by ASET and feel I can make positive contributions. I feel ASET has made great strides for their membership over the years, especially with the development of national competencies for performing END procedures. I believe continuing to implement standards like these will lead to the sustained growth of our profession. The ASET Board of Trustees can lead initiatives like these by being a unifying factor for all END technologists and our communities of interest. Acting as liaisons we can survey the membership, listen to their concerns and needs, and spur change on their behalf. Additionally, my aim would be to have a better recognition and appreciation of our profession and I believe ASET can be the driving force behind this. I would work collaboratively with other members of the END community towards attaining overall advancement of the profession. I feel that too many people, even in the health care setting, are unaware of what an END technologist really does so every person we can enlighten will make a difference. END professionals provide a service that is indispensible and we need to remind our members of this and advocate a grass roots effort to be our own best marketing tools. can/should the Society take? I would like to capitalize on the work that s been done by many of the committees thus far with respect to professional recognition and Minimum Educational Requirements. I believe that appropriate training and education allow us to deliver high-level patient care and secure a professional role among the many members of the healthcare team. I would enthusiastically work on these and other issues for the betterment of the profession. I also view the need for continuing education as omnipresent; as it supports credentialing initiatives and sets high standards for END professionals involved in direct patient care. I am also interested in pursing ideas that would attract new members to the field. Anita Schneider, R. EEG/EP T., CNIM Vice President, Marketing & Product Development Jordan NeuroScience, Inc. Patience and good listening skills are qualities I continue to cultivate. It is important that everyone have the opportunity to be heard and their point of view respectfully considered. The best solutions are the result of multiple ideas turned into action. For me, the reward in leadership is the satisfaction attained from working with others who share the same passion, to meet meaningful goals and make good things happen. board member? I have always had a genuine love for my profession, and have enjoyed direct patient care as well as research and leadership positions. I have great respect for ASET as an organization and having served on several committees and task forces has given me a broad understanding of how our Society functions. What are your goals for ASET if elected? If elected, my goal will be to work with ASET s leadership team to promote our profession and Society, increase our visibility and elevate our value as health care professionals. It is vital that we address the critical shortage of qualified neurodiagnostic staff and act to advance the level of the experienced, credentialed technologist to a more collaborative, professional relationship with our physician colleagues, who are also facing a critical shortage. Doing so will provide a well defined neurodiagnostic career ladder and expand our professional areas of responsibility. can/should the Society take? It is essential that ASET continues to keep pace with the scientific and technological advances happening in neuroscience. The value of neurodiagnostic procedures and monitoring is now well established and published in the literature of numerous medical specialties. As a result, there is increased demand for END procedures in all areas of hospitals, out-patient labs and in-home studies. Improved patient care and outcomes are driving this demand. As a Society and a profession, we must proactively seek solutions that will benefit our members and our patients. 8

Albert Grass Memorial Scholarship, 2004; Academic Honors, 1998, 2001, ASET, 2004 present; NESET, 2003 present; American Epilepsy Society (AES), 2007 present an ASET board member. I have been involved with NESET since 2005 first as secretary, then as councilor, and I have now been nominated as Vice President for In these roles, I have gained the experience of working within an organization similar to that of ASET. I have enjoyed taking part in the production of the newsletters and brochures, attending board meetings and participating in biannual regional meetings. It is a challenge to garner interest in membership, and I have learned that it takes originality, dedication and persistence to revitalize an organization. I am excited for the potential opportunity to accomplish similar goals within the larger organization of ASET. I believe that I have the skills necessary to produce quality work, encourage camaraderie amongst a team and contribute new thoughts and ideas to move the field in new directions. If selected as a board member, I will apply the skills I have gained in my years with NESET as well as those I have gained more recently as the Chief Technologist at MGH. board member? I am a dedicated, hard-working and ambitious person who enjoys working with others as a team and also independently to achieve desired goals. I am passionate about learning, and believe that it is important to always challenge myself in many ways both personally and professionally. If selected for the board, I will wholeheartedly dedicate my time and effort to the organization as a dependable worker, an effective communicator, and someone who is excited about the opportunity to contribute new perspectives to the organization. What are your goals for ASET if elected? My goals for ASET would be to continue moving the organization forward by helping to reach out to newer members in the field, and to introduce the greater public to the field of END technology to aid in the recruitment of new technologists. Our field is extremely specialized in addition to being an exciting field that is always growing and changing. Unfortunately, there always seems to be a shortage of people in the profession. I think that is one of the most pressing issues for the Society and the field in general. I would like to work on new ways to publicize the profession, recruit new technologists, and work on getting information into high schools and colleges. In addition, I would like to investigate new incentives for hospitals to send their technologists to the annual meetings and to encourage participation in the webinars and educational seminars because I think it is extremely important for all technologists to keep their skills current with continuing education. can/should the Society take? Changes in certification, training and education requirements have been current topics recently. I think it is important to maintain quality standards for training and education for technologists, but at the same time we have to be concerned about detracting from the field by applying stricter educational requirements that make it more difficult to become a technologist. The Society should actively work to improve the quality of technologists already employed in the field via board registrations and continuing education, while at the same time participating in the active recruitment of new technologists. The Society should continue to offer incentives and encourage life-long learning and the treatment of neurodiagnostics as a profession rather than just a job. In addition, I think that the Society should take an active role in the growing area of continuous monitoring in the ICU. Topics such as setting up a monitoring unit (equipment, staffing issues), patient selection, electrode application for long-term monitoring and emergency EEG, and the use of CT/MRI compatible electrodes are areas that are growing and changing rapidly and hospitals are looking for ways to expand their services. The Society could help by gathering information from those hospitals that have established successful monitoring programs and work on ways to promote this activity in hospitals around the country. 9
