With time already enveloping one more festivity, we were indeed blessed that donations had been forthcoming steadily to help us sustain our day-to-day operations. We had moved towards a more humane approach with especially our centres organising more get-togethers amongst our patients, their family members and staff members to foster closer and warmer rapport so as to minimise the loneliness and frustrations in coping with chronic kidney disease (CKD). As an inspiration to the patients and their families, we had even highlighted the experiences of some who had overcome adversities to not only lead more or less normal lives, but, had even gone to raise children to achieve higher goals in life. Furthermore, in a breakaway move from carrying out mobile health screening in situ, we had as a pilot project joined hands with MySihat, the Malaysian Health Promotion Board. Under this scheme, we carried out health screening operations, while healthcare clinics would follow through from where we left off. 4 NKF Training Centre Aims High National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF) has been conducting the Post Basic Haemodialysis (PBHD) Nursing Programme in its Training Centre since The six-month programme is designed for registered nurses with minimum two (2) years clinical working experience and three (3) months experience in haemodialysis. The programme s aim has always been to equip nurses with the knowledge and competences to respond effectively to the demands of the kidney failure patients. NKF has invested to provide a wide range of facilities for the students of the PBHD Nursing Programme, so that they will get the most out of their learning experience. These facilities that support teaching-learning activities include a computer lab, a mock ward and skill lab, online nursing journals, additional renal-focused books for the library and an additional lecture hall fully equipped with audio visual equipment. NKF Training Centre has also completed a curriculum review which incorporates Core Sciences such as Basic Medical Sciences, Behavioural Sciences and Nursing Sciences. 4 < National Kidney Foundation Malaysia NKF s Certificate in PBHD has been specifically designed to meet the Nursing Board Malaysia s criteria. In order to ensure that the overall quality of education, training, learning and assessment for the PBHD Nursing Programme is improved and maintained at a consistently high level, NKF aimed to get the accreditation for the said programme from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). The accreditation visit by the MQA s panel of auditors was conducted on 29 and 30 August The visit was an assessment exercise to ascertain that the teaching, learning and all other related activities of the PBHD Nursing programme provided by NKF have met the quality standards and are in compliance with the Malaysian Qualification Framework. NKF s hope to attain the MQA Accreditation of its PBHD Nursing Programme came through when it was awarded the Accreditation with effect from 31 July With this accreditation, more haemodialysis nurses and their employers will begin to recognise the worth of NKF s Post Basic Haemodialysis Nursing Programme.

5 Patients and Caregivers Activity: Taking Care of YOU by Ms. Kher Pui Ling, NKF Dietitian Patients and Caregivers Activity: Taking Care of YOU was an educational programme jointly organized by the Public Education and Welfare Departments of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) of Malaysia for the patients and care-givers of Pusat Rawatan Dialisis Tuanku Syed Putra -NKF (Kangar) on 10 December The programme held at the dialysis centre was aimed to: 1. Educate on patients self-care management; 2. Motivate/inspire patients to live positively. 3. Engage patients and caregivers in a fun and interative way on the diet management. Two modules were presented at the programme as follows: 1. Patients Safety; and 2. Jom! Live Positively With regard to patients safety, the presentation was made by Puan Siti Noor Fauziah, the NKF Risk Assistant Manager. The talk covered a patient s role in self-care management covering two aspects, which are health management (diet and medicine adherence, adequate dialysis treatment and effective communication with healthcare providers) and infection control (hygience, in-centre infection control, and disaster prepareness). In the case of the motivational talk which was presented by Puan Fadillah Hanim Ariff, a registered pschologist and counselor, she touched on how the patient/ caregiver copes with life in relation to dialysis and the importance of social support especially from the loved ones. To enliven the programme, a Kidney Friendly Breakfast Competition was held with the main purpose to engage the patients and their care-givers in a fun and interative atmosphere. To make the competition more exciting and challenging, the patients and their care-givers had to answer diet-related questions at the game station to get food ingredients and cooking utensils. The breakfast prepared was consequently judged among other criteria on taste, presentation, hygiene, nutrition content and teamwork. For the initial five years in his life, he enjoyed a care-free life until his mother passed away. Thereafter, he had to fend much for himself with his father who never re-married toiling to provide sustenance for both of them, while two older siblings had grown up and left the small town in search of their fortunes. After completing his secondary school education, he started working and was heading for a bright future with a good job as a marketing executive but was involved in 1977 with a bad accident which killed his colleague. 6 < National Kidney Foundation Malaysia of feeling nauseous and having headaches. He was immediately referred to Hospital Selayang where he was warded and subject to a series of laboratory tests. The medical tests confirmed that both his kidneys had failed. He was immediately placed on haemodialysis and his condition improved tremendously. However, he was advised by the hospital authorities to have his dialysis done in the long term at one of the dialysis centres. His son after surveying the different dialysis centres applied for him to be placed at Pusat Dialisis NKF Dato Dr. G. A. Sreenevasan (Petaling Jaya) and he was within a short-while admitted. He is thankful to have his dialysis at the centre saying, It is indeed a great joy for me to be receiving dialysis in NKF where I have been well taken care of by the staff and in addition to enjoying doing light household chores. Kidney transplant can be a long-term solution for many kidney patients. Unfortunately, 21,759 people are currently on the waiting list for a kidney transplant with the number of kidney failure patients increasing every year. For many of these patients, organ donation has made finding suitable donors difficult. The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) of Malaysia has launched an organ donation promotion unit at Sunway Pyramid with the support of Sunway Group. Members of the public who wish to pledge their organs can contact the National Transplant Resource Centre (NTRC) for more information or to pledge their organs. 7 NKF 2018 World Kidney Day Celebrations In conjunction of World Kidney Day (WKD) 2018, the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) of Malaysia held its Open Day on 8 March 2018 at its Resource Centre. The day began with a Bollywood Fitness Dance involving over 50 participants including the staff of the NKF Secretariat under the guidance of Mr. Kirenjit Singh, the Bahangra Dance Master. 14 Madam Ong Siew Kee Donated A Haemodialysis Machine To NKF On 20 January 2018, NKF received the donation of a haemodialysis machine at a handover ceremony at Pusat Dialisis NKF Charis (Cheras). The presentation climaxed with the placing of the plaque on the machine by Madam Ong Siew Kee with the assistance of her sons. The plaque indicates that the machine was donated by Madam Ong on 12 September 2017, which the family commemorated as the anniversary of the passing of the patriarch of the family. On behalf of the Foundation, Mr. Chua thanked Mr. Raymond H.H. Ng, her son, and other members of her family for being instrumental in making it possible for the donation of the machine. To receive the machine was Mr. Chua Hong Wee, the Chief Executive Officer of NKF. The machine was placed at the same centre where the presentation had occurred. Toyota Tsusho (M) Sdn Bhd Donated Again To NKF On 16 January 2018, Toyota Tsusho (M) Sdn Bhd s adviser, Mr. Chong Kah Ying, presented a mock cheque amounting to RM9, to the Chief Executive Officer of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) of Malaysia, Mr. Chua Hong Wee. The presentation ceremony was witnessed by the corporate social responsibility working committee members of the company. 15 Rumbling Into Charity On a sunny Saturday morning of 9 December 2017, a group of Harley-Davidson riders rumbled onto the grounds of National Kidney Foundation (NKF) of Malaysia headquarters, all for a good cause. The Kelab Motorsikal Helang Malaysia, commonly known as HTC MC successfully raised RM38,500 to purchase a Dialysis Machine for NKF.
