Conference Details: February 8, :30 9:00 am Conference Check In Take this time to pick up your conference materials, catch up with colleagues, and enjoy coffee and pastries. 9:00 12:15 pm The Reality of Activities and the CMS Requirements of Participation This session will detail the numerous responsibilities of the Activity department as mandated in the new requirements. Here are the realities: more focus on Residents Rights and Resident Council; more focus on services and programming provided for those who have dementia; more focus on abuse & neglect; more focus on person-centered care and choices; more focus on the reduction of antipsychotics (psychotropics); more focus on care planning; more focus on quality of life; more focus on behavioral services; more focus on competency skills, training (qualifications), and sufficient staff; AND a new survey process has been introduced by CMS. We are seeing more deficiencies on programming, care planning and insufficient staff than we ever have before. Come and learn as Cat provides guidance on systemic facility process and survey focus, as well as compliance recommendations. Presented by: Cat Selman, Health Care Communicators 12:15 1:30 pm Networking Luncheon (included in your registration fee) After a morning of learning, you ve earned some time to unwind! A extended time for lunch has been scheduled to allow you to discuss the day s events with fellow activity professionals, connect with some new friends, and share best practices! 1:30 3:00 pm Concurrent Sessions Select one 1. Communicating important preferences using the PELI among staff, residents, families, and volunteers. In this session, we will provide attendees with resources for using items from the PELI to enhance resident care. First, we will share a resident and family brochure about preference-based care that provider communities can customize for their own residents and family members. Secondly, we will share a process for engaging with residents about their preferences for everyday living called Preferences for Activity and Leisure (PAL) cards. Attendees will leave this session with access to a template for creating PAL cards in their own organizations. Presented by: Katy Abbott, PhD & Morgan Liddic (Gerontology graduate student) 2. Reduction of Antipsychotics & Activity Interventions - CAT SELMAN When CMS began their Initiative to reduce the use of antipsychotics in nursing homes, many facilities simply discontinued those medications, and began involving the affected residents in activities. Good idea, unless you have only one or two activity directors, and absolutely no help or support from the rest of the staff! This is a deficiency waiting to happen!! Can we reduce antipsychotic usage utilizing activities? Can we address behavioral symptoms without resorting to the use of medication? Yes, but it involves facility-wide commitment and responsibility. Come and learn how to use activity interventions appropriately! Presented by: Cat Selman, Health Care Communicators

Conference Details: February 8, :00 3:15 pm Networking Break 3:15 4:45 pm Concurrent Sessions Select One 3. All Day, Every Day Engagement for all Stages of Memory Loss What makes your life have meaning? I bet it is not bingo at 10:30 a.m. and Elvis at 2 p.m.! Join us for a lively discussion, and join the exciting movement of helping people live well with their dementia. We will review the many changes our residents experience through their memory loss journey. Learn how to use their remaining abilities to assess, develop, and adjust engaging programs. Adding meaning and purpose to our residents lives can also decreases sadness, isolation, and medications. Presented by Cheryl Freed, LSW, Vice President of Learning and Development, Kemper House 4. Activities for All Years ago, nursing homes provided care only to the elderly, who were suffering from the effects of chronic and acute aging related diseases. You rarely saw a younger or middle-aged person living in a nursing home. Some facilities report that 24% or higher of their resident population is younger individuals. With this new influx of a younger population comes huge challenges. How do you develop an appropriate care plan? How do you plan and format activities for such a diverse group? And how do you coordinate a program that will meet both the needs of your aging population, as well as the younger population? This session will attempt to answer those questions, provide insight, and offer activity suggestions/recommendations that have been successful for others. Presented by: Cat Selman, Health Care Communicators 4:45 pm Adjourn

Grab a cup of coffee and some breakfast, take some time to visit with your fellow activity professionals and get ready for another day of learning. 8:00 9:30 am Making a Difference - Being Me Making a Difference happens when each member of the team recognizes their uniqueness and that they matter to the whole of the team. In order for a leader to achieve ownership and investment from their associates, they must earn the trust of the associates. Team members will not invest and make a difference in their work world until they see that their leaders and teachers are going to walk the talk not just talk the talk. Associates want to know if their leaders are going to teach it, preach it and do it! Presented by Peg Tobin, Tobin & Associates, Inc. 3:00 3:15 pm Networking Break 9:45 11:45 am Quick Idea Sessions A conference favorite. Led by your fellow activity professionals, these quick sessions allow you to get a lot of great ideas in a short period. As always, plan to share your experience and ideas in each of these sessions as well. Learning from each other is a highlight of this event. Each session will be 25 minutes long. Now they are with you, how do you recognize them for being the great volunteer who is helping you move your program forward? You will go away with great tips to do all three using the 3 R s of a Successful Volunteer Program

Conference Details: February 9, :45 am 12:30 pm Networking Lunch It s day two, and there are still many other activity professionals to meet. Step outside your comfort zone and use this great networking opportunity to strike up a conversation with someone new but don t forget to eat! 12:30 2:00 pm Concurrent Sessions Select One 5. Memory Care Programming Without a Dedicated Unit Do you have dementia specific programming for your nursing home even though you don t have a Memory Care Unit? How you can use failure proof memory and physical activity to reduce behaviors and falls? Are you concerned that your community might have a Dementia Focused Survey and you don t think you are ready? Let us help you create dementia programming in your community that will meet the requirements for your residents. Presented by Stephen G. White BBA, ACC, Consultant, McNeal Consulting and Linda McNeal White, Community Life Coordinator, Friendship Village Columbus 6. The Impact of Programming on Social Connectedness and Engagement It is estimated that 20-43% of residents within a senior living community never leave their accommodation with the exception of meals, therapy and medical appointments. While not every resident is a joiner, it is important to discern if the resident who abstains is doing so from choice or because they don t know how to engage. Social Connectedness and Engagement are key issues in the management of senior living communities. Isolation may not be a sense of space but a feeling, even when one is in the midst of a group. Isolation and loneliness can lead to depression, withdrawal, loss of appetite, loss of cognitive ability, need for medications, etc. Senior living staff as well as family members can learn observational skills to help identify seniors at risk and how to refer them to health care professionals for assessment and intervention and/ or treatment. In addition, the presenter will show participants how a robust calendar of programming will afford options as well as opportunities for residents to become engaged at their own level and desire. The result can mean increased participation and quality of resident life engagement experience. Presented by: Carolyn Lookabill-Brand Ambassador, American Senior Magazine 2:00 2:15 pm Networking Break

Conference Details: February 9, :15 3:15 pm Closing General Session Faerie Gardens Did you know faerie gardens first debuted in the U.S. in 1893? They began as bonsai dish gardens and their popularity was likely due to the Japanese Pavilion at the Chicago World s Fair. Soon thereafter, the New York Times featured these miniature creations in an article and the rest, as they say, is history. If you are adventurous and love the mystical world of faeries then come join in the fun and folic in the world of faeries! During this session learn the history behind the Faerie Folk. Did you know there are different types and they even have likes and dislikes? Do you know where to look for them? Learn how to invite Faerie families to move into your home and live right alongside you! The presenter loves helping create gardens for those who don t have a green thumb. Trying to keep up with a live garden can be frustrating! Then there are those who wish to keep their garden indoors to enjoy all year. Learn what to look for when shopping for silk plants to use. Best of all learn to think outside the box as to the type of containers for gardens and turning TRASH INTO TREASURE. Keeping it simple is the best part. This is a hands on closing session you won t want to miss. Presented by: Debbie Marks, Tales from A Fairy Garden 3:15 pm Adjourn
