3 THE NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE CORPS (NHSC) builds healthy communijes by supporjng qualified health care providers dedicated to working in areas of the United States with limited access to care. The NHSC is part of HRSA s Bureau of Health Workforce (BHW). 3

MISSION - Improve the health of underserved and vulnerable popula+ons by strengthening the health workforce and connec+ng skilled professionals to communi+es in need. 4

6 IMPACT OF THE NHSC MORE THAN 9,600 NHSC members are currently providing care to more than 10 MILLION PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES 87 % of NHSC members conjnue to serve in areas of greatest need acer complejng their service obligajon. 6

8 LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAM
9 UP TO $50,000 FOR 2 YEARS SERVICE Offers fully trained primary care clinicians loan repayment in exchange for service in an area of greatest need, called a Health Profession Shortage Area (HPSA). With continued service, providers may be able to pay off all their student loans. Applicants working at NHSC-approved sites with higher HPSA scores are given priority. 9
10 PROVIDERS RECEIVE LOAN REPAYMENT IN ADDITION TO A COMPETITIVE SALARY FROM THEIR EMPLOYERS 1 2 Providers find a job at an NHSC- approved site THEN Apply to the NHSC for loan repayment Watch the NHSC Site Video on the "HRSATube" YouTube channel. 11 LOAN REPAYMENT AWARD The NHSC Loan Repayment Program offers priority funding to applicants who work at NHSC- approved sites in high- need areas, as defined by a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) score. INITIAL AWARD AMOUNTS UP TO $50,000 FOR 2 YEARS Full- Jme UP TO $25,000 FOR 2 YEARS Half- Jme In FY15, awards were given to applicants working at sites with HPSA scores of 14 and above. 11

13 STUDENTS PURSUING CAREERS IN PRIMARY CARE CAN RECEIVE A SCHOLARSHIP NOW AND SERVE LATER THE SCHOLARSHIP* INCLUDES: Payment of tuijon and required fees (tax- free) Some other tax- free educajonal costs (books, etc.) A monthly living sjpend (taxable) *Available for up to 4 years 13
14 YEARS OF SUPPORT = YEARS OF SERVICE Scholars commit to serve at an NHSC- approved site in a high- need area upon complejon of their training: at least two years of service. 14
15 STUDENTS TO SERVICE LOAN REPAYMENT UP TO UP TO $120,000 $120,000 FOR 3 YEARS FOR 3 YEARS Full- Jme Service Full- Jme Service UP TO $120,000 UP TO $120,000 FOR 6 YEARS FOR 6 YEARS Part- Jme Service Part- Jme Service The NHSC offers up to $120,000 in tax-free loan repayment for 3 years of full-time service or 6 years of half-time service. Loan repayment begins during residency. With continued service, eligible providers may be able to pay off all their student loans. 15
16 STATE LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAM UP TO $120,000 FOR 3 YEARS Full- Jme Service 37 STATES ARE GRANTEES UP TO $120,000 UP TO $120,000 FOR 6 YEARS FOR 6 YEARS Part- Jme Service Part- Jme Service Provides cost- sharing grants to states to operate their own loan repayment programs for primary care providers in underserved areas. Eligible disciplines vary but may include physicians, nurse prac++oners, physician assistants, dental professionals, registered nurses, mental health professionals, and pharmacists. 16

22 FY 2017 PRESIDENT S BUDGET HIGHLIGHTS - NHSC For NHSC, President s Budget requests $380 million, a $70 million increase from FY 2016, in order to: Address the prescrip+on drug abuse and heroin use epidemic and expand mental health services Support addi+onal new loan repayment awards for behavioral health clinicians 22
23 FY 2017 PRESIDENT S BUDGET NHSC (CONT D) In FY 2017, this is projected to fund: 159 new and con+nua+on scholarships 5,677 new and con+nua+on loan repayment awards 167 new Students to Service loan repayment awards 500 loan repayment awards through State Loan Repayment Program 23
24 NURSE CORPS Helps alleviate the crijcal shortage of nurses in high need areas across the U.S. and its territories. Currently, over 2,000 nurses are providing care to those who need it most. 24
25 NURSE CORPS Offers loan repayment and scholarships to nurses who work in health centers, rural health clinics, hospitals, and other facilijes experiencing a crijcal shortage of nurses. 25
26 NURSE CORPS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Covers the enjre cost of nursing school. One- year service commitment in an eligible crijcal shortage facility for each year of scholarship support (with a minimum two- year service commitment). 26
27 NURSE CORPS LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAM Pays 60% of the outstanding loan balance for all awardees in exchange for 2 years of service. For an opjonal third year of service, parjcipants may receive an addijonal 25% of their original, qualifying loan balance. 27
