2 Workforce Shortages A shortage of 22,000 primary care physicians is predicted by 2020 Shortages are predicted in all health disciplines, including nursing, oral health, and behavioral health The aging population is expected to increase demand for front line workers Need primary care providers who Can effectively use health information technology Demonstrate cultural competence Work in interdisciplinary teams The Affordable Care Act increased access to affordable health insurance coverage to millions of uninsured Americans

4 HRSA Interdisciplinary Work HRSA Bureau of Health Professions 2010 All- Advisory committee focused on Interprofessional Team Competencies HRSA sponsoring meetings (June 2010 and early 2011) to promote inter-professional competencies in education, practice, training, and certification programs. Partners include Josiah Macy Foundation Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Interprofessional Education Collaborative
5 Affordable Care Act Implementation Primary Care Training and Enhancement Nurse Managed Clinics Teaching Health Centers Workforce Analysis
6 Primary Care Programs Section 5301 of the ACA authorizes grants to eligible entities for primary care training activities (Sec 747): 1. Accredited residency or internships program in family medicine (FM), general internal medicine (GIM), or general pediatrics (GP) 2. Traineeships/fellowships for medical students, interns, residents, or practicing physicians who plan to specialized in/work in FM, GIM, GP 3. Programs to train physicians who plan to teach in FM, GIM, GP 4. Traineeships/fellowships for physicians planning to teach in or conduct research in a FM, GIM, GP training program 5. Physician Assistant education programs 6. Programs for training physicians teaching in community-based settings 7. Provide training in new competencies recommended by the Advisory Committee on Training in Primary Care Medicine and Dentistry (including patient-centered medical homes) 8. Joint-degree programs providing interdisciplinary, interprofessional graduate training in public health and other
7 Nurse Managed Health Clinics Section 5208 of the Affordable Care Act created section 330A-1 of the Public Health Service Act which authorizes a new program to provide grants to develop and operate nurse managed health clinics. A Nurse Managed health Clinic is a nursepractice arrangement managed by advanced practice nurses that provides primary or wellness services to underserved or venerable populations and that is associated with a school, college, university or department of nursing, FQHC or independent nonprofit health or social services agency.

10 National Health Care Workforce Commission Independent commission to review health care workforce and projected workforce needs Will provide comprehensive information and annual recommendations to Congress on the best use of Federal resources to maintain a well-distributed, balanced workforce that meets local, state, and national needs 10
11 National Center for Health Workforce Analysis National center to provide analysis, modeling, and data collection to project current and future workforce demands to inform policy making Coordinate with Commission and regional and State agencies Develop information on health care workforce and uniform health professions data reporting system Establish performance measures and benchmarks for and annually evaluate Title VII programs Establish a national Internet registry of Title VII grants and a database to collect data from longitudinal evaluations 11
