From the Associate RESEARCH Dean of UPDATE Research and Director of the Doctoral Program Barbara Given, PhD, RN, FAAN Spring is here! We have an NIH budget! One NIH grant has been awarded, we have another in final budget approval and an R01 waiting for the council research program. The CON has a doctoral student who completed requirements for graduation, another student received a Hartford Fellowship and another student received the dissertation award in Gerontology at MNRS. All new building approvals and bids are in. So for the College of Nursing our achievements related to research and scholarship are noteworthy. This is an exciting time because everyone with these achievements have worked hard to be at this place. As we come to summer when we will be working on our next manuscripts, grant applications and ideas or even implementing newly funded projects, we all need to take a moment to reflect on these accomplishments and how it is the culmination of development and maturity of the doctoral program. SPARROW PARTNERSHIP Dr. Gwen Wyatt has been working with several Sparrow nurses on research projects and helping them prepare manuscripts. We One project from Kathleen Marble, Sparrow clinical nurse specialist. The Maternal Experience from the Infant in the Neonatal ICU. Investigator: Kathleen Marble MSN, RNC-NIC Position: Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Neonatal ICU In 2010, over 600 infants were admitted to the Neonatal ICU at Sparrow. The literature suggests providing parents with information is key to helping reduce stress. This study will examine the effects of an anticipatory education program on selfreported stress levels of mothers with infants in the Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (RNICU). The sample will include 40 mothers with infants in the RNICU. The interventional consult is guided by an investigator-designed scrapbook. This booklet describes the physical environment of the RNICU, hand-washing techniques, equipment utilized for infant care, fluid and nutritional support, breastfeeding, developmental care, and parental interaction. Each photograph is accompanied by specific verbiage that is utilized with each consult allowing for consistency and accuracy. A 22 item tool that provides for self report by the mother will be utilized. This tool has been evaluated for consistency and reliability by the author. By reducing maternal stress, mothers may be more receptive to information provided. Potential exists for post discharge re-admission due reduction in maternal stress levels. This study amines the effects derived from an anticipatory educational intervention designed to reduce the stress levels of RNICU mothers prior to their neonates being admitted to the RNICU. These results will help inform the future development of similar interventions for mothers of RNICU neonates.
