ISRN Nursing is one of the ISRN series of journals which are designed to provide a fast peer review process for all submitted manuscripts. Dr. Millie Horodysnki s healthy eating research is spreading throughout the world. Her recent Public Health Nursing article entitled, Low income African American and nonhispanic white mothers self-efficacy, picky eater perception, and toddler fruit and vegetable consumption, has picked up coverage as far away as India. Her efforts have been published in TIME Healthland, ScienceDaily, Elements4Health, redorbit, DailyIndia, examiner, ScienceBlog, sifynews, oneindia news, and NEWS-Line. Congratulations to Dr. Horodynski on her recognition. Dr. Rebecca Lehto s application for the SBM Mock Grant Review Workshop has been accepted. Prior to the SBM conference Dr. Lehto s proposal will be discussed orally during a study section amongst the reviewers, selected applicants and workshop observers. Dr. Lehto will also serve as a reviewer to other applicants. Elsevier congratulates Dr. Debra Schutte on her co-authored journal article Consumer health informatics: From genetics to population health published in Nursing Outlook. Dr. Schutte, Anna McDaniel and Linda Olsen Keller received the Elsevier 2010 author award. NIH has accepted Dr. Costellia Talley s appointment as a BIRCWH scholar. Dr. Talley s long-term goal is to improve the quality of life among African American breast cancer survivors aged 50 years and older. The objective of this two phase project is to use a community-based participatory (CBPR) approach to pilot test a community based intervention that aims to improve QOL of these women. Results of this proposed project will be used to revise and design a large-scale study that will be submitted to NIH after the completion of the 2-year training. Congratulations Dr. Talley on this achievement. Michigan State University College of Nursing Research Center 500B West Fee Hall East Lansing, MI (517) (Phone) (517) (Fax) Grant News Congratulations to Dr. Lorraine Robbins and her team on receiving the college s third CTSI Seed Grant. The grant entitled, Middle School Physical Activity Intervention for Boys seeks to test the acceptability and feasibility of and obtain preliminary evidence of efficacy for a 6-week Guys Only Activity for Life (G. O. A. L.) intervention (guided by the Health Promotion Model and Social Cognitive Theory). Dr. Gwen Wyatt will be working with Dr. Suzanna Zick from the University of Michigan on the R01 grant entitled, Acupressure for Persistent Cancer Related Fatigue. The primary aim of the grant is to examine the effect of 6-weeks of RA compared to SA or standard of care on fatigue as assessed by: (1) weekly self-report using the Brief Fatigue Inventory; (2) objective daytime physical activity on actigraph; or (3) fatigue patterns assessed 4-times daily using a visual analog scale.
2 Page 2 PAGE 2 GRANT OPPORTUNITIES Rehabilitation Nursing Foundation Grants The Association of Rehabilitation Nurses has a number of grant funding opportunities available through the Rehabilitation Nursing Foundation. Funding is available for the purpose of advancing rehabilitation nursing through education and research. Below are some current grants available. For additional information please visit If you have questions regarding these grant offerings or if you would like official application forms, please info@rehabnurse.org. RNF Grants offer funding up to $30,000 for rehabilitation nursing research which is awarded in the form of multiple grants. A New Investigator Award will be awarded for up to $10,000. Up to two grants from the remaining amount will be awarded to recipients, who will be designated RNF Research Fellows. Joint Sigma Theta Tau International (STT) and RNF Grant of $4,500 will be given to one individual with a research topic related to rehabilitation nursing. Joint Oncology Nursing Society Foundation (ONSF) and RNF Grant provides $10,000 for one research project that will advance rehabilitation nursing in patients with cancer. AGING RESEARCH WORKSHOP From the Associate RESEARCH Dean of UPDATE Research and Director of the Doctoral Program Barbara Given, PhD, RN, FAAN The New Year starts with new energy, new resolutions and new goals. January brings with it exciting news that includes research and scholarship. Costellia Talley has become a BIRCWH fellow which gives her two years of support to develop her program of research. We congratulate Lorraine Robbins on her recent CTSA-MSU funding. In addition, we anxiously await word of funding on three very strong scored grants. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) announces the annual Summer Institute on Aging Research, a weeklong workshop for investigators new to aging research, focused on current issues, research methodologies and funding opportunities. The program includes consultations on the development of research interests. The 2011 Summer Institute will be held July 9-15 in Queenstown, MD. Support is available for travel and living expenses. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national or permanent resident. Applications are dues March 4, For additional information and application form visit or Taylor_Harden@nih.gov. RESEARCH PARTNERSHIP NEWS Sparrow Health System Partnership As the CON-Sparrow partnership looks forward to the New Year, we also reflect on the many successes of Manuscripts: Jan Bartlett, perioperative CNS, submitted a manuscript to the Association of Peri-Operative Registered Nurses (AORN) on her research project that assessed the benefits of a peri-surgical liaison nurse. Mary Lou Mitchell, CNS in neurology, along with speech therapist, Brooke Frommeyer, will submit a manuscript on bedside dysphagia assessment to the journal Stroke in early Research Projects: Kathy Marble, neonatal CNS, will conduct a study on maternal education for mothers whose newborns go directly to the Sparrow neonatal intensive care unit following delivery. This study provides mothers with information and coping skills to adapt to the specialized care needed by their newborns. Leah Cohen, critical care CNS, will continue the development of a study that will focus on concordance between RNs on neurological assessments of delirium for vented patients. Leah has provided inservice education for all 150 nurses on this assessment in the three adult intensive care units. Her study will assess how consistently the new assessment tool is being used in each of the three units. Enrichment Activities: A continuing education program was offered at Sparrow on evidence-based practice (EBP) on December 10, Two Sparrow nurses, Deb Nault and Leah Cohen, took the lead on this workshop, along with Nursing Research Consultant, Gwen Wyatt and CON doctoral student, Chia Tai Hung. The program was designed to help nurses keep EBP in their awareness. DECEMBER CON GRANTS SUBMITTED Horodynski, M. Testing a Self Regulation Latent Construct Among Month-Old-Toddlers.
