The Journal of Anesthesia and Clinical Research is an international, peer-reviewed journal publishing original research articles on all local, general and regional anesthesia, intensive care and pain therapy. The journal promulgates extensively the inevitable use of anesthesia during surgeries, other medical or dental procedures, preventive measures followed during preoperative and post operative conditions, coexisting disease, and its risks and complications. Dr. Gwen Wyatt s research on acupressure has been creating a buzz with area reporters. On February 23 the MSU News featured Dr. Wyatt in an article titled, Acupressure Shows Promise in Relieving Fatigue in Cancer Survivors. Allvoices.com also featured Dr. Wyatt in an article titled, Alternative Therapies Fight Fatigue in Cancer Survivors: Therapies Like Acupressure Found to Give Relief for Fatigue in Breast Cancer Survivors. Dr. Wyatt was also interviewed by Rina Miller from Michigan Radio, which was picked up by NPR, on the NIH Acupressure Study. Congratulations Dr. Wyatt on your media coverage. Abstract Reviewer Byma, E. Journal of Pain and Symptom Management From the Associate RESEARCH Dean of UPDATE Research and Director of the Doctoral Program Barbara Given, PhD, RN, FAAN We continue to wait on word of funding for Mei-Wei Chang, Lorraine Robbins and Gwen Wyatt. We are hoping that congress in their good wisdom will soon pass a budget. It is hard to know when funding will start again. Having a NRSA to go in this month for Lisa Singleterry is good news for the doctoral program. Having Denise Soltow Hershey defend her dissertation and completing her doctoral study is important for the college. As we wait for grant funding announcements we celebrate what we have accomplished and all the grants that were submitted. We cannot be funded without submitting grants so we have to continue that. The university is seeking a 15% increase in the number of grants submitted. In addition we will seek funds from foundations and alternatives to NIH. Thus we have plenty to do and numerous activities to keep our student and faculty grants flowing. Grant News The college has just received its first Sigma Theta Tau International Research Grant. Chia Tai Hung is the recipient with her proposal entitled, Caregiver-patient congruent symptom perception of pain and fatigue in the trajectory of cancer care. The objectives of this study are: 1) to identify changes in congruence of pain and fatigue perception between cancer patients and caregivers over time; 2) to examine the association between the demographic characteristics, caregiver burden, caregiver depression, total number of patients symptoms, and changes in congruent symptom perception over time; and 3) to examine the influence of changes in congruent pain and fatigue perception on patients HQOL and caregivers physical health. Congratulations Chia Tai! Former PhD student, Paula Sherwood, was awarded the Fulbright-Saastamoinen Foundation Grant in Health Sciences. This is a 5 month grant for lecturing and performing research at the University of Eastern Finland, primarily within the School of Nursing. The award will run from January to mid-may of Dissertation Defense On March 23, Denise Soltow Hershey will present her oral dissertation defense in A230 Life Science, 2:30-4:30 p.m. The defense entitled, Older Adults with Diabetes and Cancer: Impact on Diabetes Self-Management, examined the relationship between individual, clinical and behavioral characteristics in adults 50 and older who have preexisiting diabetes and are receiving chemotherapy for a solid tumor cancer at baseline and after a minimum of eight weeks of chemotherapy. Age and level of diabetes self efficacy was shown to be significant predictors for baseline self-management. Please join the PhD office in support of Denise Soltow Hershey. Award News Incoming PhD student, Barbara Jonker, has received the University Enrichment Fellowship award. This 5-year support package is the university s most prestigious graduate fellowship. Congratulations! GERONTOLOGY NEWS The inaugural meeting of the Nursing Gerontology Research Interest Group (N-GRIP) was held February 18, 2011, in the College of Nursing. N-GRIP consists of doctorally prepared faculty (PhD and DNP) who are conducting or translating research in the area of gerontology, as well as doctoral students with a focus in gerontology. The mission of this interest group is to spark creativity and collaboration in research discovery and translation towards improved health for older adults. The immediate efforts will focus on building the infrastructure to support research collaboration and innovation among gerontology researchers in the College of Nursing. If you have questions or wish additional information about this effort, please contact Debra Schutte, PhD RN at or schutted@msu.edu.
