The team focused on a periodontal surgical procedure that is aimed at covering the gingival recession using coronally advanced flap and connective tissue grafting. The link to the module will be found at connective-tissue-graft/. Before viewing the simulation aspect of the module, one should first download the Touch Surgery app ( the-app/). As the world s first cognitive surgical simulation software, Touch Surgery is backed by studies that proved its construct, face, and content validity. However, as with all highly skilled people, we can never replace them; we only hope to find a substitute. Amendt Associate Dean For Research Hospital Dentistry Participates in Local Fundraising Event for Ronald McDonald House Charities and Becky Meyerholz Rappels! The Hospital Dentistry Institute took part in a local fundraising event for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House face their greatest fears every day. On Friday, September 15, Becky Meyerholz, a Hospital Dentistry Oral Surgery nurse, faced her fears and rappelled 158 feet (13 stories) down the Plaza Towers in downtown Iowa City. Becky wanted to rappel to show her support to all pediatric patients and provide them with strength to face their own fears. I am a mom of two wonderful kids. I want to them show how facing your fears can push you on to fulfill your dreams, says Becky. She faced her fears with this rush of going over the edge to empower all of the pediatric patients who are fighting their fight. They are not alone and we can do this! Twenty-six individual supporters and twelve teams took part in the event. Together, they raised over $53,000. 3 Page 3 Meet Larry Newman, DNP, ARNP (Left) Larry Newman, DNP, ARNP, is a nurse practitioner who is trained to provide primary care services to adults, age 16 and older. He specializes in geriatric adults and is currently working at the Geriatric/Special Needs Dental Clinic every Thursday, offering services to both dental patients and their family. He began this project with the guidance of Dr. Howard Cowen, director of the Geriatric/Special Needs Dental Clinic, and a generous grant from Delta Dental Foundation of Iowa. Dr. Newman earned his Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) from the University of Iowa College of Nursing. He is a board-certified adult geriatric primary care nurse practitioner and director of the Adult/Geriatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program at the UI College of Nursing. Dr. Newman can address elevated blood pressure and elevated blood sugars in addition to offering procedural services such as removal of ear wax, toe nail trimming, or simple mole or age spot removal. Patients can also be referred to him for nicotine dependence and advice on losing weight. Services will be billed to a patient s medical insurance. 11 The Carver College of Medicine Office, Office of Faculty Affairs and Development is pleased to announce a partnership with the Research Development Office at the University of Iowa. They will be offering a grant writing workshop on October 24. Dr. M.S. (Peg) AtKisson earned a PhD in neuroscience from Tufts University but has spent most of the last 16 years thinking about grant applications. In 2001, she founded the grant and research development support office at Tufts University, where she and her team helps secure $140,000,000 in grant funding through She also worked for Grant Writers Seminars and Workshops from , providing training in grantsmanship and direct support for individual applicants.
