2 Meeting the Behavioral Healthcare Needs of Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and Co-Occurring Psychiatric Diagnoses September 12, 2012 Course Code: T263 Presenter: John McGonigle, PhD Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Rehabilitation Science and Technology Program Director Western Region ASERT Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities Cheryl C. Parker, MEd Dual Diagnosis Coordinator PA Department of Public Welfare Office of Developmental Programs Bureau of Supports for People with Intellectual Disabilities This conference will focus on differentiating developmental and behavioral factors from psychiatric syndromes, and formulating psychiatric diagnosis. We will also discuss best practice approaches in the assessment and treatment of persons with dual diagnosis (IDD/MI) through the use of a least restrictive treatment model, including the use of PRN medications. At the conclusion of this program participants should be able to: Examine best practice approaches in the assessment and formulating psychiatric diagnosis of persons with developmental disabilities and challenging behaviors. Discuss ways to design a least restrictive treatment model in the treatment of persons with intellectual disabilities and co-occurring psychiatric diagnosis. Identify two methods in assessing response to treatment / interventions. Describe ways to present mental health information to the treating psychiatrist during the office visits. This is an introductory program for mental health and health care professionals who work with individuals with mental illness and intellectual disabilities and their families continuing education units (CEUs) which are equal to 2.0 contact hours. 3 Substance Use Disorders in Older Adults October 10, 2012 Course Code: T264 Presenters: Keith R. Stowell, MD, MSPH Associate Medical Director, Psychiatric Emergency and Intake Services Attending Psychiatrist, Benedum Geriatric Center Tishanna I. Lewison, MS, Board Eligible NCC Psychiatric Specialty Counselor II Addiction Medicine Services This program will provide an overview of substance abuse and dependence in the older adult population. The epidemiology of substance use in this population will be an area of focus. In addition, screening, diagnosis, and barriers to identification of substance use disorders will be discussed. Finally, treatment strategies will be examined, including a discussion of potential benefits and risks in a population with often comorbid medical and psychiatric illness. At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to: Identify likely substances of abuse in older adults. Describe diagnostic strategies and barriers to diagnosis in this population. Examine treatment options, including biologic and psychosocial treatments. This is an introductory program for all clinical and research professionals, students, trainees, as well as interested family members and consumers continuing education units (CEUs) which are equal to 2.0 contact hours. 4 Working Together: Managed Care, Behavioral Health, and Peer Specialists in Recovery-Oriented Programs Presenter: Kim MacDonald-Wilson, ScD, CRC, CPRP Director, Recovery and Transformation Community Care Behavioral Health Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychiatry University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine November 14, 2012 Course Code: T265 Jewel Denne Director of Ambulatory Services Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC Keirston Parham, CPS Recovery Services Coordinator, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC The presentation will provide an overview of the principles of recovery, examples of recovery oriented organizations and programs, and the role of peer specialists. At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to: Describe how the principles of recovery are applied in behavioral health programs. Identify how peer specialist and service provider roles differ and complement each other. Discuss strategies used by peer specialists, agency staff, and managed care to integrate peer services in behavioral health. This is an introductory program for all mental health care workers, peer specialists, supervisors, administrators and others interested in behavioral health services continuing education units (CEU's) which are equal to 2.0 contact hours. 5 Light Therapy: Treatment Indications and Proper Management Presenter: Dorothy Sit, MD Assistant Professor of Psychiatry University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine December 12, 2012 Course Code: T262 This videoconference will first address the appropriate use of light therapy for mood disorders diagnostic indications which include seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and major depressive disorder. Other possible indications such as antenatal depression and delayed sleep phase will be discussed. Diagnostic challenges such as Bipolar Disorder, mixed episodes, rapid cycling will be highlighted and important contraindications of light therapy will be reviewed. Time permitting, the role of light and wake therapy may be covered. Secondly, an optimal approach to managing patients with light therapy will be discussed. Management issues will include light therapy dosing, timing, how to initiate treatment and monitor for response. Also reviewed will be early identification of adverse or intolerable effects; strategies to reduce adverse effects; effective ways to monitor, detect and manage treatment emergent symptoms; how to choose an appropriate light box; and use of simple, helpful assessment tools to guide clinical care. At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to: Assess and properly diagnose SAD and major mood disorders. Identify appropriate patients, prescribe light therapy and properly monitor clinical response. Educate patients and their family members on the possible benefits and risks of light therapy. This is an intermediate program for all clinical and research professionals, students, trainees, as well as interested family members and consumers continuing education units (CEU's) which are equal to 2.0 contact hours. Each physician should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
