1 Teesside University Pre-registration Nursing Programme Year Two Spoke Information Booklet for Students (1209 onwards) Year two/stage two placement information: Adult GP Practice/walk in Centre and Health Visitor allocations There are two long practice learning periods within the second stage of the programme. During the second placement period you will spend one week working in a GP practice or walk in centre and one week with a Health Visitor. The purpose of these placements is to enable you to further develop knowledge and skills relating to caring for people across the age continuum, family centred care and meeting the needs of children and young people. The placements will also enable you to further develop your knowledge and understanding of the role of other members of the health and social care team and their contribution to service user care and that of their families/carers. Negotiating and recording student learning in the spoke placements You should discuss the one week learning experiences with your zoned academic and practice mentor during the first tripartite meeting On the first and last day of each allocation the short placement documentation record within this booklet should be completed by you and your supervisor. This information should be reviewed by your hub practice mentor and/or zoned academic mentor if your spoke placement occurs after the final tripartite meeting Students are supernumerary throughout their practice allocations. This means that you are not part of the areas designated staffing numbers. You are required to work the shift patterns allocated to you by your Practice Mentor/supervisor and this could include working night duty.

2 Aims: Aims and Outcomes for the one week placements To enable students to develop their understanding of the role of the nurse and/or health and social care practitioner/s within this area of practice and their contribution to the service users care and that of their families/carers To develop students understanding of common physical and mental health problems associated with childhood and adolescence, their effects and treatments. To develop students understanding of and ability to recognise, indicators of deterioration in infants, children and young people and strategies to protect them where there is a risk of harm. To develop students understanding of the health and nursing care needs of people accessing the service and their health care journeys To further develop students understanding of multi-disciplinary/multi agency working and how this contributes to the promotion of positive health and social care outcomes and service user experiences To further develop students interpersonal skills when liaising with service users, their families/carers and the multi-disciplinary/multi-agency team To develop students understanding of how learning from this area of practice can be transferred across different care settings and client groups Learning Outcomes: The student will be able to: Reflect upon how their own values, attitudes and experiences may impact upon their understanding of the service user group Demonstrate understanding of the development of children and young people within the family context and how this affects their individual needs, health, behaviour and communication Recognise indicators of deterioration in children and young people and strategies to protect them where there is a risk of harm. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the range of health, nursing and social care needs experienced by infants, children and their families/carers, and the role of the nurse and/or health and social care practitioner in meeting these needs Demonstrate effective communication with service users, their families/carers and the multi-disciplinary/multi-agency team Implement planned care, under supervision. Work in partnership with people requiring nursing care and their families and carers in a way which promotes autonomy and dignity, demonstrating respect and sensitivity at all times Demonstrate self-awareness and through reflection on practice, identify how their learning can be transferred to different care settings and further developed Demonstrate a professional approach when interacting with service users, relatives, carers and colleagues using verbal and non-verbal behaviour
