1 Teesside University Pre-registration Nursing Programme Preferred Option Information Booklet for Students (1209 onwards) Year one/stage one placement information: All Fields There are two long practice learning periods within the first stage of the programme. These are followed by a four-week placement period towards the end of the year. If you have referred in practice these four-weeks will be used for reassessment and you will return to your hub placement. You do not need to complete this document. If you do not require a practice reassessment then this four week period enables you to follow a particular area of interest from a selection of placement choices. Students are expected to divide these preferred option placements into two allocations. You must complete this document and hand it to your zoned academic mentor at the end of the preferred option period. Preferred option choices The placement choices will be ed to you by the placement team. You must select six preferences from the advertised menu. The placement team will try to place you in at least one of your choices for a two week period. Please note that some or all of the choices enable you to meet programme requirements in relation to working with service users and their families from different fields of practice. There is some variation between the choices for each nursing field and the menu takes account of the experiences the programme team feel will enhance your learning. Please make sure you complete the correct documentation. Within this booklet there are aims and outcomes for: Placement s within your own field of practice Children s nursing or Health Visiting placements (documentation for adult, learning disabilities or mental health field students) Learning disability nursing/social care placements (documentation for adult, children s or mental health field students) Mental health nursing placement s (documentation for adult, children s or learning disabilities field students) Adult nursing placements (documentation for children s, learning disabilities or mental health field students
2 Students are supernumerary throughout their practice allocations. This means that you are not part of the areas designated staffing numbers. You are required to work the shift patterns allocated to you by your Practice Mentor/supervisor and this could include working night duty. The Placement Journey Year One Placement period one 8 weeks Placement period two 8 weeks Preferred option Placements 4 weeks (2x2 weeks) *Final Tripartite meeting due this week * ** ** Hand in completed preferred option documentation to zoned academic mentor on completion of preferred option placements for review Negotiating and recording student learning in the preferred option placements You should discuss the preferred option placement choices with your zoned academic and practice mentors in the first tripartite meeting within the second placement period. They may guide you in your choices and offer advice regarding your selections and learning opportunities which will enhance your experience. Please note that you cannot meet end of year competencies in the preferred option placements. In order to progress to the preferred option placements your unratified feedback in the final tripartite meeting, must indicate that you have met these competencies by the end of the second placement period. On the first and last day of each preferred option placement the short placement documentation record within this booklet is completed by the student and their supervisor. This completed preferred option document must be submitted to your zoned academic mentor on completion of the placements Study Week: Week 45 The zoned academic mentor will review the document to confirm that you are working to the spirit of the NMC Code (2015) and expected standards of practice. If the placement/s enable/s you to log hours with the alternative client groups you must ensure that the LEARNING LOG FOR MEETING ESSENTIAL CARE NEEDS AND DEMONSTRATING EXPERIENCE OF WORKING WITH THE ALTERNATIVE CLIENT GROUPS is completed in addition to this documentation. REMEMBER THAT YOU MUST COMPLETE A MINIMUM OF 37.5HRS WITH EACH OF THE ALTERNATIVE CLIENT GROUPS IN ORDER TO MEET THE PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS.
3 Aims and Outcomes for the Preferred Option Placements Aims: Own Field of Practice To enable students to develop their understanding of the role of the nurse within this area of practice To develop students understanding of the health and nursing care needs of people accessing the service and their health care journeys To develop students understanding or multi-disciplinary/multi agency working To develop students interpersonal skills To develop students understanding of how learning from this area of practice can be transferred across different care settings and client groups Learning Outcomes: The student will be able to: Reflect upon how their own values attitudes and experiences may impact upon their understanding of the service user group Discuss the range of health, nursing and social care needs experienced by the service user group and their families/ carers, and the nurses role in meeting these needs Demonstrate understanding of the roles of members of the multidisciplinary / multiagency team within the placement area, and how they work in partnership with others. Demonstrate the development and maintenance of effective therapeutic relationships with service users and carers. Implement planned care, under supervision. Work in partnership with people requiring nursing care and their families and carers in a way which promotes autonomy and dignity, demonstrating respect and sensitivity at all times Demonstrate self-awareness and through reflection on practice, identify how their learning can be transferred to different care settings and further developed Demonstrate a professional approach when interacting with service users, relatives, carers and colleagues using verbal and non-verbal behaviour

8 Aims and outcomes for a two week placement working with people who have a learning disability and their families /carers (Please note that you may be placed in social care or nursing care settings for this experience) Aims: To develop students understanding of the role of the learning disability nurse and the range of specialised health and social care services available to people with learning disabilities and their families/carers To enable students to develop their understanding and ability to use a range of communication strategies, tools and skills when working with people who have a learning disability and their families and carers To develop students understanding of how they can promote service user involvement in decision making, in order to facilitate informed choice through person centred approaches when working with people who have a learning disability in any health and social care setting Learning Outcomes: The student will be able to: Reflect upon how their own values attitudes and experiences may impact upon their understanding of learning disabilities Discuss the wide range of health and social care needs experienced by people who have a learning disability Discuss common co-morbidities and the nurses role in optimising health and wellbeing Identify strategies which support access to health and social care and promote individual choice Discuss how initiatives such as health passports are used to facilitate a person centred approach and the provision of appropriate health care for people with a learning disability and their families Identify and use appropriate communication strategies, tools and interpersonal skills to facilitate the development of therapeutic relationships and enable the individual to be included in their care Implement planned care, under supervision. Work in partnership with people who have a learning disability, their families and carers in a way which promotes autonomy and dignity, demonstrating respect and sensitivity at all times

To enable students to gain an insight into the communication needs and skills involved in caring for someone experiencing changes in their mental health. Learning Outcomes: The student will be able to: Reflect upon how their own values attitudes and experiences may impact upon their understanding of people, who require support due to changes in their mental health To develop students understanding of the role of the mental health nurse and the range of specialised health and social care services available to people experiencing changes in their mental health and their families and carers To enable students to develop their understanding and ability to use a range of therapeutic communication strategies, tools and skills when working with people experiencing changes in their mental health and their families/carers and their families and carers Discuss the wide range of health and social care needs experienced people requiring mental health support and those of their families and carers Implement planned care, under supervision. Discuss the role of the nurse, the Multidisciplinary team and support services in caring for people with mental health needs. Demonstrate self-awareness and through reflection on practice, identify how their learning can be transferred to different care setting and further developed Demonstrate a professional approach when interacting with service users, relatives, carers and colleagues using verbal and non-verbal behaviour

14 Aims: Aims and Outcomes for a two week allocation in a Children s Nursing/Health Visitor setting To enable students to develop their understanding of the role of the nurse and/or health and social care practitioner/s within this area of practice and their contribution to the service users care and that of their families/carers To develop students understanding of common physical and mental health problems associated with childhood and adolescence, their effects and treatments. To develop students understanding of and ability to recognise, indicators of deterioration in infants, children and young people and strategies to protect them where there is a risk of harm. To develop students understanding of the health and nursing care needs of people accessing the service and their health care journeys To further develop students understanding of multi-disciplinary/multi agency working and how this contributes to the promotion of positive health and social care outcomes and service user experiences To further develop students interpersonal skills when liaising with service users, their families/carers and the multi-disciplinary/multi-agency team To develop students understanding of how learning from this area of practice can be transferred across different care settings and client groups Learning Outcomes: The student will be able to: Reflect upon how their own values, attitudes and experiences may impact upon their understanding of the service user group Demonstrate understanding of the development of children and young people within the family context and how this affects their individual needs, health, behaviour and communication Recognise indicators of deterioration in children and young people and strategies to protect them where there is a risk of harm. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the range of health, nursing and social care needs experienced by infants, children and their families/carers, and the role of the nurse and/or health and social care practitioner in meeting these needs Demonstrate effective communication with service users, their families/carers and the multi-disciplinary/multi-agency team Implement planned care, under supervision. 17 Aims and Outcomes a Two Week Placement Caring for Aims: Adults with Physical Healthcare Needs To enable students to develop their understanding of the role of the nurse within this area of practice To enable students to develop their knowledge and understanding of the holistic health and nursing care needs of people accessing the service and their health care journey To enable students to participate in multi-disciplinary/multi agency working across the health and social care sector To provide students with the opportunity to further develop their knowledge and ability to recognise common physical health problems experienced by adults and older people who come into their care, including their effects, treatment and immediate nursing care requirements To enable students to continue to develop a range of interpersonal skills which will enable them to work effectively with people accessing health and social care To help develop students ability to provide safe care to adults and older people in an emergency, or act to protect them where there is risk of harm, including first aid, basic life support and obtaining emergency assistance when needed. Learning Outcomes: The student will be able to: Reflect upon how their own values attitudes and experiences may impact upon their understanding of the service user group Discuss the range of health, nursing and social care needs experienced by the service user group and their families/ carers, and the nurses role in meeting these needs Demonstrate a broad understanding of the lifespan development of adults and older people, their roles within the family context, and how this affects their individual needs, health, behaviour and communication. Make a baseline physical health assessment of an adult or older person, monitor their condition and recognise and respond to any deterioration. Discuss the impact of co-morbidities and co existing health and social care needs upon the individual and associated nursing interventions to promote health and well-being and person centred care Demonstrate a detailed understanding of the roles of members of the multidisciplinary / multiagency team within the placement area, and how they work in partnership with others Demonstrate the skills necessary for the development and maintenance of effective therapeutic relationships with service users and carers Implement planned care, to meet peoples essential care needs under supervision
