1 Teesside University Pre-registration Nursing Programme Service Improvement Placement Information Booklet for Students (1209 onwards) Year three/stage three placement information: All Fields During the first few weeks of your third year you will undertake a two-week allocation which enables you to focus upon service improvement and clinical governance frameworks within provider services. You will receive an containing a link to the service improvement offers portal. Within this portal you will be able to choose your service improvement placement. This is on a first come first served basis. When selecting your options think about the type of experience that will be provided by the areas identified in the list, and how the experience will help you build upon your learning from previous placements. The placement is part of your practice module learning and although it will help you think about ideas for your major project and how innovations and change is introduced, its purpose is much broader than this. It will also help you consolidate and develop your knowledge and skills relating to patient care and nursing practice. So think about your interests and how the experience will enhance your learning. Negotiating and recording student learning in the service improvement placement On the first and last day of the placement the short placement documentation record within this booklet is completed by the student and their placement supervisor. The completed documentation must be included within your third year portfolio for review by your practice and zoned academic mentors during the two long placement periods as it will help them to build upon your learning in these placements and provides them with feedback regarding your progress and learning in practice. Students are supernumerary throughout their practice allocations. This means that you are not part of the areas designated staffing numbers. You are required to work the shift patterns allocated to you by your Practice Mentor/Supervisor and this could include working night duty.

2 A diverse range of placements are used for this allocation. Some will be with corporate teams, some with specialist nurses and some in ward areas/departments. The list below has been provided to help sign post you to activities/topics to discuss with your supervisor/mentor during the placement and explore in the area. Remember however that talking to and listening to patients, service users and their families/carers as you provide nursing care, and observation will provide you with some of your most valuable learning. Examples of audit undertaken in the placement Patient satisfaction questionnaires/surveys Patient safety thermometer information Any statistical collation why, what and where does it go? CQUIN targets related to the placement and how data is collected and used Evidence based practice and research within the area Ward Rounds and/or MDT meetings and how these are used to enhance service user/experience, care and communication Intentional rounding The Friends and Family test How the service was developed. Finances and budgets how these influence practice? Service evaluations Dashboards Links to corporate services Transformation of services including service improvement models used in the area Change management Introducing change and overcoming resistance to change within the service Quality Assurance processes and monitoring CQC Visits DATIX/Incident reporting and feedback. Policies and procedures and governance Organisational culture Safer Staffing NICE, NHS England, Professional body requirements Aims and Outcomes for the Service Improvement Placement Aims: To enable students to develop an in depth understanding of service improvement and clinical governance frameworks within provider services To further explore the contribution nurses make to service improvement and clinical governance. To enhance students understanding of the integral role research and other forms of evidence can play in informing service improvements.

3 To provide students with an opportunity to develop their understanding of how service improvement projects are planned, undertaken and evaluated in a real life context. Learning Outcomes: The student will be able to: Identify quality assurance strategies used within the area to enhance the experience of those accessing and delivering the service and promote best practice Identify the role clinical governance and service improvement play in promoting patient safety and minimising risk Identify service improvement initiatives within the area and how these have been conceived and progressed Demonstrate an in depth understanding of the range of evidence underpinning the identified service improvements. Identify the resources and mechanisms available within the service to support service improvement and individuals working on projects at different levels within the organisation Demonstrate understanding of the need to involve all key stakeholders within service improvement initiatives, including service users, carers and the multidisciplinary / multiagency team Demonstrate an in depth understanding of the role of effective leadership in promoting continuous improvement Demonstrate an in depth understanding of the legal, ethical, professional and Clinical Governance frameworks that underpin service improvement, Demonstrate a professional approach when interacting with service users, relatives, carers and colleagues using verbal and non-verbal behaviour
