1 Career Guide for the Arizona State University Fraternity and Sorority Community Designed for the 2016/2017 School Year

2 Today s highly competitive employee recruitment world has employers spending considerable time and money to find the ideal candidates for their companies. Their recruitment of college students places them on campuses across the country, where they attend career fairs, present at small workshops, and interface with career-related staff members. As a result, the students, career officers, and recruiters can be overwhelmed with scores of names, some information, and a bit of frustration. Welcome to Greek Ladders, a company dedicated to connecting employers with quality internship and full-time employment candidates. We launched Greek Ladders for many reasons, including bridging the gap between campuses and students, providing fresh resources to job-seekers, connecting employers to skilled labor, etc. One reason, in particular stood above the rest. Campus to campus, the majority of students are not taking advantage of resources made available to them. Greek Ladders is owned and managed by Greek alumni who share a passion for service, leadership, and fraternal excellence. Collectively, we have over 50 years of alumni volunteer experience with our fraternal leadership.

3 We target the Greek community: To develop strong collaborative relationships with campus leaders, particularly Fraternity/Sorority Life officers and campus career center officers; We believe fraternity and sorority members learn, understand, and practice leadership on a daily basis and the acquired skills can easily be applied to the workplace. We take the perspective that launching the ideal career doesn t happen overnight and with no planning. Rather, it s the culmination of hard work in the classroom, involvement on campus and in the community, development of strong relationships, and extra-curricular experience. We re busy connecting jobseekers and employers, while creating ways for both to develop relationships. Businesses and non-profit organizations typically seek self-starting, confident, interested, and engaged employees and interns. They re looking for more than just book-smart individuals they re seeking the right fit. Employers are recruiting candidates who possess leadership qualities, understand the hiring process, and have done their homework on the employers and their available positions. The Greek Ladders model connects job-seekers and employers through online and interactive methods to create mutually-beneficial relationships.

4 Many students use Greek Ladders Anyone involved in Greek Life, as a current member of a fraternity or sorority, is invited to enlist the support, guidance, connections, and resources offered by Greek Ladders. Join the online Career Network! There s no cost to register and students receive the following benefits: An online profile featuring a personal description, resume, academic performance, campus and community involvement Access and connection to internships found within and outside of their fields of study Access and connection to full-time employment opportunities Guidance to navigate the career process, including connecting with employers, enhancing online profiles, and leadership and career-driven advising Access to academic and leadership development resources Access to career development resources, designed to prepare students to secure internships and full-time employment We actively present students to potential employers who regularly ask us for students based on different career interest criteria, location, skills, etc. They also ask us for our preferred students, which we base on the level of activity and interactivity via the Career Network. Opportunities for alumni/ae Benefits and opportunities presented to chapter alumni/ae include: Same benefits as job-seeking students Access to the network of employers and job postings Access to interface directly with students and employers Seek career advancement and upper management positions Serve as mentors to students Support students by serving as personal and professional references Participate in alumni-to-alumni networking The online network is free for students, alumni/ae, chapters and campuses! Greek Ladders provides an effective tool for alumni to utilize an official vehicle designed to connect students to internships and full-time jobs.

5 Chapters benefit as affiliates Developing strong relationships with chapter is very important to us. We create these affiliate relationships to provide each chapter s students and alumni/ae with outstanding career opportunities. The tools and resources provided to them are designed to amplify their college and fraternal experiences, while preparing them to obtain ideal employment. The Chapter Affiliate program enables chapters to Provide a well-rounded leadership experience Serve as a catalyst in each member s career development path Present a meaningful way for chapter alumni and parents to actively engage Manage a four-year leadership and career development program Register as a Deliver another example why joining a fraternity or sorority is extremely valuable Chapter Improve alumni and parent relations Affiliate Develop relationships with business and non-profit professionals Increase the level of chapter member involvement Benefits to Employers Greek Ladders represents the best interests, brand, and positions offered by each employer. Our standard is not determined by the number of hires we officially process, but the frequency and value of touch points. Our goal is to connect job-seekers to employers, and vice versa, for the purpose of creating ideal employment situations.

6 Registration and Profile-Building The value of the Greek Ladders Career Network is determined by the number (and activity) of Individual (students, alumni, parents). Much like the whole chicken and egg scenario, with every individual registrant, the likelihood increases of another Employer registering into the network. The best way for job-seekers and mentors to connect with the employers of their choices is to register a large number of career-focused, qualified leaders into the career network. Once registered, each person should complete their career profiles to the best of their abilities. Affiliate chapters are expected to strongly encourage their members to register into the Greek Ladders Career Network and complete profiles. The process to complete an individual career profile in the Career Network is as simple as: 1. Logon to 2. Click Join/Login on any webpage. 3. Create an account (it s free!). 4. Build your personal online career profile. Click here for tips. 5. Upload a resume. We recommend in Word or pdf format. If you encounter issues, please it to Greek Ladders. 6. Contact Pete Parker (click here), a Greek Ladders co-founder/director and let him know that you ve completed the profile. This will trigger Pete to target you as being ready for viewing by potential employers. 7. Like the Greek Ladders Facebook page, follow the Greek Ladders Twitter (@GreekLadders), and follow the Greek Ladders LinkedIn Become a highly recommended job-seeker Every action taken within the career network is tracked and generates points, called Career Capital. When employers view directories of job-seekers, they immediately look for the candidates career capital points. Points are generated a number of ways, including: updating profiles, sharing/liking social media posts, and attending career events. 7 Student Path to Success Each student s pathway toward launching his or her career is accentuated by completing key steps aimed at enhancing the student s appeal to prospective employers. As students complete the following, the level of engagement from Greek Ladders increases. 9 How we re helping students career capitalize The following are activities aimed at preparing and engaging key stakeholders with career events and activities. Register and Create Profiles Students join the Greek Ladders Career Network, either through self-driven registrations or in batches as provided by the respective organizations. There s no cost to join the Career Network and this can take place prior to and after Fall and Spring recruitment. Students create online career profiles, which encapsulate majors and minors, expected graduation dates, career interests, campus/chapter involvement, work experience, and more. Students can post and/or their resumes for review and feedback. These resumes may be uploaded to their profiles, which may be made available for viewing by employers. Students may have their LinkedIn profiles screened for feedback by Greek Ladders founders. August 17 Job Fair The fair will showcase on-campus and off-campus job opportunities, most of which will be part-time. Students can find great opportunities here. Those whom aren t looking for jobs, may want take advantage of the fair, especially since it s one month before the three-day career fair. Students can visit with employers to establish relationship, learn more about hiring practices, and discuss eventual job opportunities. This primer for the big career fair might pay off in elevating each candidate s hiring potential. Students planning to capitalize on the job fair will be invited to have their resumes screened by Greek Ladders staff prior to the fair. Fall and Spring Career Fairs The two and three-day career fairs will feature 75+ employers looking for quality talent for a variety of job opportunities. Prior to the fair, students will be able to: Learn about simple tips to make the career fair work for them Receive suggestions to improve resumes in advance of the three-day event Follow a checklist of action items after the career fair is complete Fraternity/Sorority Networking Hour The unique event held in the evening of Career Fair Day #2, September 21, at an on-campus location or another time during the fall semester. The networking event would bring employer representatives together with students. The event would provide the following benefits/opportunities: Introduce employment recruiters to active student leaders in an interactive setting. Track student participation through RSVPs and actual attendance. Students could earn professional development points for their respective organizations. Prepare students for the career fair and networking night through blogs, s, and videos. Employers could receive access to resumes of participating students. Spring Career Carnival The event is designed to prepare students for career fairs, networking receptions, and job/internship interviews. The event could take place any time, including just prior to the spring career fairs or during Greek Week (April 3-9). It s deemed as a carnival because students will participate in: Resume reviews Mock interviews Elevator coaching Cover letter reviews Speed Networking First impression evaluations
