By: Kathryn Troutman The class begins with the importance of networking, the federal application process and how to get a civil service position. Our Certified Federal Job Search Trainer (CFJST) will clarify the federal job process in 10 straightforward steps, making the difficult task of applying for a federal job easier. You will discover what specific jobs are available, what agencies are hiring, and how veterans and civilians qualify for federal jobs. This module will cover the basics of each website on how to register, develop a profile and search for jobs. You will explore all agencies to determine how agencies differ from one another. You will develop skills in navigating various systems which follow the same set of requirements and standards set by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). The new website is currently in progress and you will learn about some significant new and improved added functions. The resume builder has clearly been improved with new features and additional space for Key Words. These changes will make a big difference for those who already have a resume in the USAJobs system. We will learn how to utilize the new system and review the important differences from the old to the new. 104 THE AVUE REVIEW THE AVUE REVIEW A review of the unique AVUE DIGITAL SERVICES ( which is another federal online system utilized by 15 agencies such as USDA, Department of Justice, US Forest Service, and Department of Justice and others. This module will cover many aspects of the website from how to register, develop a profile to searching for jobs. Instructor will review how to copy and paste the master resume step by step. Understanding this system is key to a successful federal job search VETERAN S PREFERENCE ADVANTAGE VETERAN S PREFERENCE ADVANTAGE Veterans and family members will gain a better understanding of Veteran s Preference as it relates to special hiring authorities. Learn how separated military personnel may use the five point or ten point preference for federal employment opportunities. The Federal Government offers many opportunities for veterans and disabled veterans. A thorough explanation of many topics will encompass VRA, VEOA, and Status Veteran Eligibility. Additionally, an explanation is given on how veterans are ranked and referred in veteran preference order. Many resources are provided that will make a difference for veterans and disabled veterans, as well as their families DEMYSTIFYING YOUR FEDERAL RESUME DEMYSTIFYING YOUR FEDERAL RESUME The federal résumé writing workshop is designed to enhance upon the basic federal résumé writing strategies that are briefly discussed in the Ten Steps to a Federal Job. 6 components of the electronically formatted federal résumé to help veterans and civilians seeking federal employment. Learning objectives will be met for both visual and auditory learners as participants will receive printed handouts of multiple federal résumé samples and be able to follow a PowerPoint presentation. Presentation topics include: Electronic federal résumé formats including USA Jobs résumé builder, Army Resumix, and other DOD agencies. How to highlight you re most important skills, core qualifications, key words, and accomplishments in the Work History section to get you qualified for a job. Learn how to format KSAs into be in the body of the résumé. How to effectively highlight your education so you can prove that you meet education and training requirements. How to leverage the additional information section by including a summary and supporting information. 107 UNDERSTANDING THOSE POPULAR ONLINE ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS UNDERSTANDING THOSE POPULAR ONLINE ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS Discover why the questionnaires were developed. Generally, the KSAs were used to demonstrate Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. The assessment questionnaires were developed because of the different requirements of each position. You will gain a better understanding on how to provide responses to questions that will evaluate whether you meet the minimum qualifications of the position. Examples of multiple choice answers: A - I have no experience in performing this work behavior. B - I have limited experience in performing this work behavior. I have had exposure to this work behavior but would require additional guidance, instruction, or experience to perform it at a proficient level. C - I have experience performing this work behavior across routine or predictable situations with minimal supervision or guidance. D - I have performed this work behavior independently across a wide range of situations. I have assisted others in carrying out this work behavior. I seek guidance in carrying out this work behavior only in unusually complex situations. E - I am considered an expert in carrying out this work behavior. I advise and instruct others in carrying out this work behavior on a regular basis. I am consulted by my colleagues and/or superiors to carry out this work behavior in unusually complex situations 108 COVER LETTER FOR NEWLY CONSTRUCTED FEDERAL JOB COVER LETTERS FOR NEWLY CONSTRUCTED FEDERAL JOB As you begin applying for a federal job on the USA Jobs you will have the option to submit a cover letter. Although the cover letter is optional, it is a good time to expand on your additional key skills and core Page 6 of 9

7 competencies. When the cover letter is well-written to match the announcement, it can make a difference. You will learn how to create a cover letter that will enhance your federal application. 109 INTERVIEWING SKILLS FOR THE FEDERAL INTERVIEW The class will provide an overview of interviewing skills from the first impression, characteristics of a successful interview (preparation, presentation, content) to behavioral interviewing style questions/and answers. The importance of effectively demonstrating the Context, Challenge, Action and Results (CCAR) formula in responding to questions during the federal interview. Discover how to research the agency mission, evaluate the announcement to know the environment, and develop 3 to 5 questions to ask after the interview. Finally, our trainer will review the importance of follow-up, common mistakes made, and additional interview tips. 110 HOW TO JOB HUNT UG SOCIAL MEDIA HOW TO JOB HUNT UG SOCIAL MEDIA With the buzz being about Networking you will discover many ways to use social media in order to network and find a job. Discover how to use LinkedIn.com, Facebook.com, Twitter.com, YouTube.com, and GovLoop.com. These social medial websites allow you to build a profile and upload your resume. There are ways to use social media in a job search specifically for company search through blogging and joining different networking groups. We will share many ways to connect to great employers. 111 FEDERAL RESUME WRITING TRAINING PACKAGE 9 Hours Additional One-on-one Training es FEDERAL RESUME WRITING TRAINING The federal resume writing training is available to assist an individual who may be lacking the understanding how to write various resumes for a family group of positions. Discover how to gain insight on a particular selected job posting and how to match skills to the selected announcement. The trainer will show the individual how to write the resume by providing step-by-step guidance for a particular career niche. There will be continual sessions in writing, editing and revision with the completion of a 4 to 7 page resume. Page 7 of 9

This course is beneficial for those who require extra guidance on understanding how to navigate various employment applications in both private and federal sectors. 113 INTERVIEWING SKILLS TRAINING 2 Hours Additional One-on-one Training es INTERVIEWING SKILLS Additional training to assist an individual who has been contacted by a potential employer for a particular position. During this time an individual may find it necessary to acquire additional support and guidance. This training is beneficial as a refresher course on both Traditional Q&A and Behavioral Q&A sessions. 114 PRIVATE/CORPORATE PRE-EMPLOYMENT TRAINING PACKAGE - $1, Total Hours One-on-one Training es PRIVATE/CORPORATE PRE-EMPLOYMENT TRAINING PACKAGE The private sector and corporate training is focused on Entry to Executive Level Resume Writing Training and Job Search. The package includes individual career coaching to determine a career niche by providing an assessment tool. Additionally, the individual will learn skills to develop resumes for Internships, Job Fairs, and Corporate positions. The training includes training on the use of job boards and how to apply for those jobs on multiple systems. The final steps would include one-on-one interview skills training using the traditional interview Q&A process. 6 Hours PRIVATE/CORPORATE JOB SEARCH FOR 2012 This class encompasses an overview of résumé writing/cover letter strategies (styles, format and language) job search and online application strategies. Our trainer will review 3 types of resumes to consider (chronological, combined, and functional) as well as six unique writing tips. In addition, you will learn how to transition your military or federal background into civilian language, understand key word usage, and accomplishment writing.
