In an effort to foster a more collegial research environment and promote the accomplishments of the members of our community, Funding Alerts will now be including a Merit Prizes and Awards table in its weekly communications. With a few exceptions, most of these awards are open nominations that do not require institutional approval. Internal Funding Opportunities FINAL CALL: OHSU Presidential Bridge Funding Presidential Bridge Funding is meant to support established investigators threatened by an imminent lapse in research support. Grants are made for a one-year project period from the date funds are awarded. Up to four grants will be awarded. Application deadline: Jan. 8, 2018 Amount: $50,000 over one year Eligibility: Open to OHSU investigators only who are at or above the level of assistant professor (or its equivalent) and who have previously had R01 or similar funding. Oregon Roybal Center for Aging and Technology Pilot Program The overarching objective of this program to improve technology as well as to translate that technology into useful tools to improve the health of the aging. ORCATECH offers the use of its Life Laboratory for translational research to study how to best use technologies to assess health and maintain independence in a person s home. LOI deadline: Jan. 15, 2018 Application deadline: Feb. 19, 2018 Amount: Up to $45,000 over one year Eligibility: Open. Submit all inquiries and letters of intent to Tracy Zitzelberger. Cancer Research UK and OHSU Knight Cancer Institute Spark Award Provides up to 20,000 for UK-based researchers plus $20,000 for their OHSU-based counterparts for up to one year to build multidisciplinary teams that will continue to work together in the future and to fund

2 their pilot experiments, travel and networking costs, and associated running expenses. Application deadline: Jan. 16, 2018 Amount: Up to 20,000 plus $20,000 for one year Eligibility: Applicant must be an OHSU faculty member or a CEDAR scientist. Cancer Research UK and OHSU Knight Cancer Institute Project Award Supports new and existing collaborations of scientists from diverse fields with up to 250,000 for UKbased researchers plus $300,000 for their OHSU-based counterparts for up to two years, which may be used to pay for postdoctoral researchers, technical staff, associated running expenses, and up to 5,000 in equipment costs. Application deadline: Jan. 16, 2018 Amount: Up to 300,000 plus $250,000 over two years Eligibility: Applicant must be an OHSU faculty member or a CEDAR scientist. Oregon Tax Checkoff for Alzheimer's Research Fund This research granting program is organized through the Oregon Partnership for Alzheimer s Research (OPAR), a statewide program administered through the Layton Aging & Alzheimer's Disease Center at OHSU. The mission of OPAR is to foster the development of promising research on Alzheimer s disease in Oregon. Priority for funding is given to investigators just entering the field of dementia research. LOI deadline: Feb. 9, 2018 Application deadline: Apr. 17, 2018 Amount: $20,000 over one year Eligibility: Open. Submit all inquiries and letters of intent to Allison Lindauer, PhD, NP. Friends of Doernbecher Grant Program The grant program enables Doernbecher faculty and staff to pursue research or develop projects and programs at the hospital. In many cases, these grants provide the initial, seed-stage funding that can get a project underway and provide a platform and track record to assist in securing longer-term grants from the National Institutes of Health or other sources. Featured Funding Opportunities FINAL CALL: The Charles A. Dana Foundation David Mahoney Neuroimaging Program: Using Brain and Immune Imaging Innovations to Improve Human Health - career development Funds support pilot-testing by investigators, who are early in their research careers, to enable them to pursue promising, high-risk, and innovative ideas that have a direct clinical application. 3 American Cancer Society Research Professor Grants - career development The American Cancer Society offers a limited number of grants to provide unique research opportunities to foster maximal productivity in cancer research. These grants provide flexible funding for established investigators in mid-career who have made seminal contributions that have changed the direction of cancer research. Furthermore, it is expected that these investigators will continue to provide leadership in their research area. LOI deadline: Coming soon: Feb. 1, 2018 Application deadline: Apr. 2, 2018 Amount: Up to $400,000 over five years Eligibility: Applicant must have obtained full professorship within the past 15 Merit Prizes and Awards The National Institute for Health Care Management Foundation Health Care Research Award Recognizes outstanding published work from researchers furthering innovation in health care financing, delivery and organization or the implementation of health care policy. Application deadline: Feb. 16, 2018 Amount: $10,000 Eligibility: Articles must have been published in a peer-reviewed journal during calendar year 2017 either in print or online. Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Excellence in Science Award Recognizes outstanding achievements by women in biological science. Recipients are women whose career achievements have contributed significantly to further understanding of a particular discipline by excellence in research. Nomination deadline: Mar. 1, 2018 Amount: $10,000 Eligibility: Nominator and nominee must be members of one of the Member Societies, although they do not need to be members of the same society. American Philosophical Society Judson Daland Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Investigation Recognizes outstanding achievement in patient-oriented research. Nomination deadline: Mar. 15, 2018 Amount: $50,000 Eligibility: Candidates must be nominated by the chair of a clinical department of a medical school or hospital. International Balzan Prize Foundation Balzan Prizes in Fluid Dynamics and Chemical Ecology The four Balzan Prizes are awarded to scholars, artists and scientists who have distinguished themselves in their fields on an international level. Nomination deadline: Mar. 15, 2018 Amount: Up to $770,000 Eligibility: Self-nominations are not accepted. Albany Medical College Albany Prize The Albany Med Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research is awarded to a physician, scientist or group, whose work has led to significant advances in health care and scientific research with demonstrated translational benefits for improved patient care. Its purpose is to encourage and recognize extraordinary and sustai
