7 Prepare for meeting with potential research mentors Read papers that the PI has published (Pub Med) Prepare questions about the research topic Provide your Biosketch and discuss research goals and prior experience, if any Convey your time commitment to the research project Convey whether or not your participation in research is contingent upon availability of funding Determine where the research is performed Determine who will supervise the work in the laboratory Determine what is the desired outcome of this research

8 Prepare for meeting with potential research mentors (cont.) Determine if the project you would be working on already has IRB/ILACUC approval. If not, will approval be obtained before application due date??? Consider asking potential mentor if you could attend a lab meeting to meet the other lab members, hear about ongoing research etc. Ask your mentor what professional societies or foundations relevant to their field offers medical student mentored research grants which could potentially fund your stipend to pursue research with them. Determine if your potential mentor could provide funding for your stipend if you do not receive a scholarship or other sources of sponsorship

13 NIH Summer Internships The NIH Clinical Center (CC) Summer Internship Program offers summer internships to a variety of students including medical students. Each year, more than 7,000 students apply to the National Institutes of Health Summer Internship Program. From this pool, ~1100 summer interns were selected and approximately 50 students are selected to participate in the Clinical Center's internship experience. 15 HHMI Medical Research Fellows Program Summer Medical Fellows Program The Summer Medical Fellows Program is primarily aimed at students who later intend to apply for the year-long Medical Fellows Program. Summer Medical Fellows spend eight to 10 weeks doing full-time research with an HHMI investigator, early career scientist, HHMI professor, or Janelia researcher. This program is for medical, dental, and veterinary students attending schools located in the United States. Up to 20 fellowships are awarded annually. Students must be able to conduct full-time research for at least eight consecutive weeks (10 weeks preferred). START EARLY!! You must contact a mentor on their list to prepare a research projects as part of your application.

20 2014 Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship Research support for a continual period of a minimum of 8-10 weeks, 30 hrs/week, or an average of 4 hrs/wk for 12 months over 1-2 years. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship OSU students submit their application to the OSU chapter of AOA, and then the committee selects one application to send to the national office for consideration. 50 Fellowships are granted nationwide. Applications are due to OSU chapter by December 31st, 2013 and must include a 3 page summary of the proposed research project, the applicants CV, a letter of support from the faculty supervisor, the mentor's biographical sketch, and the completed application form with checklists. 25 HHMI Medical Research Fellows Program Year-Long Medical Research Fellows Program at an Academic or Nonprofit Research Institution The Medical Research Fellows Program gives students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a year of basic, translational, or applied biomedical research. Medical Fellows experience the excitement and intellectual rewards of research before making plans for residency or postgraduate training. The students select their own mentor at any academic or nonprofit research institution in the United States (excluding the National Institutes of Health) or abroad, provided the proposed mentor is affiliated with a U.S. fellowship institution, and work with the mentor to develop a research proposal. Mentor selection and the research project proposal are key components of the application. Working with an HHMI investigator, early career scientist, or HHMI professor is encouraged but not required.

Janelia Farm Research Campus Students interested in neuronal network function or imaging at the cellular and molecular level are encouraged to apply for fellowship positions at HHMI s Janelia Farm Research Campus. Fellows at Janelia take part in cutting-edge research and work with small, interdisciplinary teams of chemists, biochemists, neurobiologists, geneticists, physicists, computer scientists, mathematicians, and engineers in a collaborative, creative, resource-rich environment. Prior research experience is not a prerequisite. What makes Sarnoff unique is our lifetime commitment to the Fellow. A member of our Scientific Committee guides the Fellow during the research year and throughout the Fellow's career.
