1 RESEARCH AFFAIRS COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM: III D DATE: November 19, 2013 ****************************************************************************** SUBJECT: Hanover Research: Grant Development Center Following an initial discussion with representatives from SDSU, personnel from Hanover Research contacted the Board of Regents to assess system level interest in leveraging their grant development center. Information pertaining to the range of services they provide can be found in Attachment I, and based on the initial discussion, the ability to perform targeted analysis of funding opportunities and webinars may serve a useful system function. RAC representatives are asked to review the materials provided in the attachment and be prepared to discuss whether further discussion with the vendor is warranted to help meet institutional needs. ****************************************************************************** RECOMMENDED ACTION Discussion & Recommendation

10 Representative Staff Biographies Hanover Research GRANTS CONSULTANTS Bryan DeBusk Since 2008, Dr. Bryan DeBusk has helped clients obtain more than $100 million in funding from government agencies and private foundations including the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and other health-related agencies and organizations. Dr. DeBusk assists basic and clinical health researchers prepare competitive proposals by providing comprehensive consulting support including writing, review, and revision. With an academic background in the health sciences and experience obtaining external funding for his own program of research in a university setting, Dr. DeBusk brings both scientific expertise and grants development skills to the consulting relationship that equip him to help researchers improve the quality of their proposed work as well as the clarity of the presentation. Dr. DeBusk s NIH experience includes preparation of proposals for most of the agency s institutes and centers through the research (e.g., R01, R03, R15, R24) and program/center (e.g., P01, P50) grant mechanisms as well as training grants (e.g., T32), cooperative agreements (e.g., U19, U54, UH2/UH3), and others. His clients routinely receive Impact/Priority Scores of 25 or better, and he has served as lead consultant on proposals scored in the first percentile. Kelly Feil Kelly comes to Hanover with over 20 years of successful program development and non-profit management experience. For five years, she served as a Director for the National Disease Research Interchange (NDRI), creating and managing multiple 1750 H STREET NW, 2nd FLOOR, WASHINGTON, DC P F
11 Hanover Research federally funded programs. At the University of Pennsylvania, she was the Director and Co-Investigator of an NCI-funded program that served thousands of biomedical researchers nationwide. She has secured almost $25 million in grants from federal, state and foundation funders in areas including education, workforce development, healthcare and the humanities. Her federal grants experience includes the U.S. Departments of Labor, Education, Agriculture, and Health and Human Services (including NIH, AHRQ, and HRSA) as well as the Institute of Museum and Library Science, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Science Foundation. She is also an expert in multiple areas related to federal compliance, including budgeting/grants management, human subjects, and privacy regulations. Martha Norton Since 2004, Martha has helped secure more than $8 million for organizations and research institutions. Federal agencies and departments she has worked with include the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the United States Department of Housing and Urban Department (HUD), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Institute of Health (NIH), and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Martha has also worked with small businesses on their Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant applications. Martha s special expertise lies in grants that focus on public health, medical research, youth development, workforce development, and the research and development of alternative energy sources. Martha received her B.A. from Wellesley College and her M.A. from Brandeis University. Leah Nosek Leah Nosek has been working in the non-profit sector for more than a decade. She holds a Master s degree in Social Work and Public Policy from New York University and has extensive experience creating, coordinating and implementing grantfunded programs within the fields of substance abuse, mental health and after-school education. As full-time grant writer in the healthcare industry since 2008, Leah has worked with front-line staff, program managers, directors and hospital executives to research and identify grant prospects, develop comprehensive fundraising strategies, cultivate identified prospects, prepare and submit complex grant proposals, and complete required grant reports. She has successfully solicited and received over $2.5 million in program support and capital grant awards from a wide-range of national and regional funders including corporate, family and private foundations Hanover Research 2
12 Hanover Research Susan Perri Susan specializes in grant writing, philanthropic fundraising, and has focused her career on organizational development and revenue maximization for municipalities, school districts, and NGOs nationwide. Examples of successfully funded grant proposals include U.S. Department of Education (ED), U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Susan has also successfully raised millions of grant dollars through state agencies and private foundations. She holds a Master s degree in public affairs with a concentration in nonprofit organizational management from the University of Colorado. Prior to her position with Hanover Research, Susan worked as a grants consultant and proposal writer for Randall Funding and Development, Resource Associates, and Polycom. Her grant writing has resulted in over $26 million in funded grant proposals and new programming in healthcare, education, telecommunications, and environmental conservation. Susan has also served as a grant peer reviewer for the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, United Way, and several community foundations. Chad Ross Before joining Hanover, Chad was a Senior Grantwriter and Program Officer for the International Center for Arid and Semiarid Land Studies (ICASALS) at Texas Tech University s (TTU) Office of International Affairs. While at ICASALS, Chad s grant writing work helped TTU receive a $250,000 grant from the Department of Education s FIPSE to fund a study abroad program in Brazil. Chad is well-versed in a variety of types of federal proposals because of his collaboration with many departments while at TTU, such as education, civil engineering, agriculture, foreign language, geology, and geography. He also has a wide range of writing experience between his time as an academic researcher and writer, as well as a professional grant writer. Chad earned his undergraduate degree in English and Spanish and M.A. in English from Texas Tech University. Carol Ann Soltz For over ten years, Carol Ann has successfully developed proposals, written and managed grant projects, securing funding for universities, complex hospital systems and small grass-roots nonprofit organizations. Her expertise lies with foundation 2013 Hanover Research 3
13 Hanover Research grant support, with extensive experience writing for health and human service projects, program support, capacity building grants, bricks and mortar projects, and research grants. Prior to working with Hanover, she was the Director of Foundation Relations at Children's Hospital of Orange County, where she secured over $7.5 million from private and corporate foundations to support community growth, education, and healthcare programs. Carol Ann earned her Master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and holds the Grant Professionals Certification credential through the Grant Professionals Association. This credential recognizes proficiency in standards that include tenure in the profession, education, demonstrated achievement and a commitment to service for public and private philanthropy. Paul Tuttle Paul brings to Hanover more than 11 years of grant writing and proposal development experience. For nine of those years, he worked in university research administration at three public universities in North Carolina, including two Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), where he identified appropriate funding opportunities and managed universitywide sponsored program proposal development. At Hanover Research, Paul assists clients with grant proposal development by writing proposal abstracts and narratives and offering strong editorial guidance and revision. Paul holds a B.A. in English and an M.A. in English with a concentration in Rhetoric and Composition. His background in persuasive writing has enabled him to secure or assist in securing just over $80 million in awards to date, including almost $5 million since coming to Hanover, mostly from federal sources such as the U.S. Department of Education (ED), National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and various Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) agencies, including the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). His efforts have also helped to secure awards from national foundations such as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation as well as other federal agencies, state agencies, professional associations, and corporate, family, and community foundations. Kristina Weaver Kristina s approach to grant writing is informed by more than a decade of international experience in community development and collaborative problem solving for social and environmental justice. Prior to joining Hanover, Kristina worked as an environmental consultant providing strategic planning, mediation, facilitation, and training services to 2013 Hanover Research 4
14 Hanover Research community groups, non-profits, and government agencies. Kristina is passionate about helping Hanover clients refine and resource innovative solutions to some of society s most persistent challenges, from local food system development to health care access. She has a proven track record of successful foundation and federal grant writing and experience working with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). An alumna of the Marshall Scholar program, Kristina holds a joint Ph.D. in Geographical & Earth Sciences and English Literature, as well as two Master s degrees. She is a graduate of Yale, Cambridge, and Glasgow Universities. Before moving to Virginia, Kristina lived and worked for several years in Europe and West Africa. Teresa Wilke Teresa has over 15 years of experience in program design, project management and strategic communications, including 10 years of experience developing grant proposals and grant seeking strategies for universities and health care providers. She is a successful proposal writer, securing over $7 million in new grants for nursing and science education, facility renovations, health literacy and improved access to medical care for the underserved. She has obtained grant funds from private foundations, the U.S. Department of Education (ED), National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Teresa has worked in several federal agencies and executive departments, including the White House, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). She has also served as a peer reviewer for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Teresa received her M.B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis with an emphasis in strategic consulting. Teresa s first-hand federal agency experience, research acumen and strategic mindset allow her to align clients institutional strengths and resources with funding agency priorities to identify grant targets and develop persuasive proposals. Kitty Wojcik Kitty Wojcik, GPC, CGMS is one of a hand-full of grant specialists in the country that holds both the Grant Professional Certified (GPC) and Certified Grant Management Specialist (CGMS) credentials. Kitty is a designated subject matter expert for the Grants Professionals Certification Institute and the National Grant Managers Association and has served on the Board of Directors for the Grant Professionals Association and the Grant Professionals Foundation. Kitty serves on federal 2013 Hanover Research 5
15 Hanover Research peer review panels for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), the Center for Disease Control (CDC), and the Corporation for National and Community Service, as well as for private grantmaking foundations. Kitty also holds a Nonprofit and Civil Society Studies Certificate from the Institute for Policy Studies, Johns Hopkins University. Over the past three years, Kitty Wojcik has assisted clients in obtaining nearly $20 million in grant funds. Michael Preuss Michael Preuss, Ed.D., comes to Hanover Research with extensive background in securing funds for higher education institutions for both four year academies and community colleges. His experience in proposal development for large, interdisciplinary and multi-institutional projects and background in grantsmanship training for faculty and staff development comes as a result of his previous work as a Proposal Development Officer at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Director of Grants at Pitt Community College in Greenville, NC. Michael has worn several hats throughout his career, last serving as adjunct faculty after four years of service at LeTourneau University as a Learning Environment Coordinator. Michael holds a Doctorate in Education from Liberty University in educational leadership with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction. Additionally, Michael is affiliated with the National Council of University Research Administrators, North Carolina Chapter of the Society of Research Administrators International, and National Organization of Research Development Professionals. While at Pitt Community College, Michael led a team to secure a $20.5 million grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services Hanover Research 6
