11 University Challenge 2016 MISSION To bridge the gap from GNSS research & academia to entrepreneuship CO-ORGANISERS Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen (AZO) GNSS Research & Applications Centre of Excellence (GRACE) PARTNERS 11
12 University Challenge 2016 OBJECTIVES Addressing students and research associates with a background in aerospace and GNSS-specific courses of study, in particular with the aim of fostering the transformation of bright ideas into commercial ventures. Seeking to reach out to any young researchers working in areas of potential applications, be they prospective automotive engineers, logistics providers, game and other mobile application developers, or health promoters. Heightening the exposure and credibility of student innovations on a global level while establishing links to the world of business. PRIZE The winner will receive a EUR 1,000 cash prize. Virtual incubation, technical and business consultancy support (a EUR 3,000 value) will be provided by the GNSS Research & Applications Centre of Excellence (GRACE). 13 APPLICATION EXAMPLE TU Delft :: UC Winner 2015 Application: GNSS Monitoring of Precipitable Water Vapour over East Africa Using Low-Cost Receivers What it s all about Uses low-cost GNSS receivers to measure signal delay caused by moisture in the atmosphere Thus gives good indication of amount of water Builds on existing TAHMO (Trans-African Hydro-Meteorological Observatory) network around Lake Victoria Adds GNSS/Galileo receivers to 20,000 weather stations across Africa Aims to greatly improve rainfall predictions 13
14 APPLICATION EXAMPLE University of Applied Sciences Rosenheim :: UC Winner 2014 Application: Hail Navigator and Precipitation Reporting System for Hail Suppression Aircraft What it s all about Unique and novel system designed to protect citizens by warning them of potential hail damage Combines navigation with a precipitation reporting system for hail suppression aircraft Provides guidance to pilots of hail suppression airplanes for optimal locations to inject silver iodide into clouds Provides real-time information on flights for advanced weather reports 14
15 SUCCESS STORY KINEXON :: Overall Winner 2013 Application: Wearable sensor that can locate athletes with centimetrelevel precision, along with a cloud-based monitoring system What happened? Started an incubation at an incubator of the European Space Agency The company grew up to about ~ 40 employees Cooperation with various partners incl. a soccer team from the national German league Widened their target market (retailers, hospitals, care homes, manufacturers, e.g. Intel) Made a huge technological breakthrough and offer now also indoor products 15
16 SUCCESS STORY CATUAV :: GSA Special Prize Winner 2011 Application: Traffic Collision Avoidance System for Drones What happened? Prize pushed the idea to TRL 9 Created official test site for drones with segregated airspace Offering workshops, hangar, offices, ground control station, etc. Acquired other companies for testing their prototypes Started research GSA project (mapkite) 16
17 SUCCESS STORY Vulog :: Overall Winner 2005 Application: Free-floating Car-sharing Application and Service What happened? True pioneer and leader in free-floating car-share industry Developed solution and expertise, and operated prototype service Kept on working on solution/service for more than 10 years Successfully acquired new clients such as Peugeot-Citroen, or Sixt Recently launched the city s only car-sharing solution in Vancouver offering a full fleet of 250 four-door, hybrid vehicles Company about to expand and move into new building 17

Started an incubation at an incubator of the European Space Agency Got their first big client (a UK property group) Employ 11 people and opened a branch office in another country Cooperate with major clients from various industries (e.g. Nissan) Operate in several countries around the world, incl. the UK, the USA, Australia, Ireland, France, Switzerland, and Thailand 18
