We are living in a time where economic disparities between the rich and the poor are greater than ever. A world where war and conflict are the standard not the exception. An era where hunger, slavery, occupation and extreme poverty are real. In some cities, the view from five-star hotels overlooks homeless children sleeping in the streets. I have seen it. While we have advanced technologically as a society and global interconnectivity has made us more empathetic we have collectively failed to rise up and take action against these global atrocities even though we are more equipped today than any other generation before us to solve them. Why? Because we lack opportunity, inspiration and know-how and that is why I am so excited to welcome you to the 9th annual Hult Prize Regional Finals. At the Hult Prize, we have made it our mission to inspire, activate, build and fund startup solutions to some of the world s most pressing issues. We focus on the how. Moving good intentions into action. It is also our mission to raise and drive awareness to the opportunities that exist by servicing the worlds less fortunate through lasting, sustainable business. I firmly believe that when you harness the power of energy creatively, you can indeed change the world and improve the lives of millions, while simultaneously building a robust and profitable enterprise. Since founding the Hult Prize in 2009, we have seen some amazing things. We have launched industry pioneers in food, healthcare, education and transportation. We have inspired millions of people around the world to think differently, and make the impossible a reality. We believe in the viability of business solutions to conquer social issues. We believe that social impact can come from anyone, anywhere not just the usual suspects, philanthropists and non-profit organizations. Most importantly, we believe more than ever in the wisdom of the crowd, and in YOU! The Hult Prize has created a global movement to help entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs in the making succeed. We have brought together global leaders like President Bill Clinton and Nobel Peace Prize Winner Muhammad Yunus to help us in leading an entire generation to change the world. Thank you for taking the time to participate in this year s Hult Prize, and congratulations for making it this far. It is my hope that irrespective of the outcome of the regional finals, that this experience will lead to a new and better world for you, the institutions you represent and the beneficiaries you aim to serve. 4 ABOUT HULT PRIZE The Hult Prize Foundation is the world s largest engine for the creation and launch of market- based, SDG-aligned, sustainable, and impact-centered startups emerging from university, offering a grand prize of USD1 million. 4 The year long, September to September program focuses on immersion based learning and converting typical job-seeking students into game-changing entreprenerus world-wide. Each year a specific SDG aligned challenge is set and broadcast to universities in over 100 countries around the globe, and more than 100,000 students respond annually by building on-campus teams and developing entrepreneurial startup ventures which sustainably solve the challenge. Ideas are presented in off-line format to in-person executive selection committees at over 1500 demo day pitch events in multiple rounds around the world, starting with on-campus, followed by in-country, regional semi-finals and a global final. The regional semi-finals take place across 15 global cities on six continents, where 3,000 finalists pitch for one of fifty final startup spots in the Hult Prize Summer Incubator at the Ashridge Castle outside of London where they are also joined by the winners of dedicated Franchised National Programs across 25 nations. There, students live, learn, work, and play over an intensive 7-week program designed to rapidly accelerate the development of each of their startups., Hult Prize Regional Finals

5 By the end of the life-changing program, students are transformed into entrepreneurs, and business ideas become investment ready enterprises suitable for scale. 5 The top companies emerging from the summer program are invited to pitch one last time at the global finals, where an all-star line up of judges ultimately select the global recipient of the Hult Prize and a USD1M startup grant. Since 2017, the Hult Prize Global Finals and Awards Reception has been hosted at UN Headquarters in partnership the United Nations. Since being launched in 2009, the Hult Prize Foundation has grown to become a leading force on college campuses around the world, inspiring an entire generation to rethink how business can be used to sustainably solve the SDGs. The organization is led by it s founder Ahmad Ashkar, and generously supported by Swedish entrepreneur Bertil Hult -- the founder of EF Education First and his family.
