1 Black Sea Eco-Academy #51, Rustaveli str., Batumi 6010, Georgia tel: ; ; +995 (32) bsea@batumi.net, bsea@access.sanet.ge Brief history The Black Sea Youth Eco-Academy (AEA), Environmental Information and Educational centre, non-governmental non-profit organization was founded by the Black Sea NGO Council in Batumi, The main aim is to increase environmental awareness, popularisation environmental sciences, to support development youth environmental groups, facilitate public participation process. After the re-registration in 1998 the Black Sea Eco-Academy (BSEA) became a successor of the Black Sea Youth Eco-Academy. As a core member of Black Sea International NGO Network and National office BSEA it plays liaison role between various international, national and local environmental and civic groups, media organization in Georgian Coastal Zone. Objectives of organization involve all sectors of society in the protection and rehabilitation of the Black Sea encourage the reduction of pollution and waste from all sources within the Georgian coastal zone stimulate awareness on the diversity of wildlife and habitats associated with the Black Sea establish and support a regional network for the dissemination and exchange of environmental information establish and support an LA21 group and assist in the development and implementation of its action plan promote sustainable business management e.g. waste minimisation encourage schools to teach environmental protection and conservation participate in the eco-education part of the Georgian National Environmental Strategy (Georgian Ministry of the Environment) contribute to the environmental education strategy for the national and regional curricula for schools (Georgian and Ajarian Ministries of Education) involve young people in conservation activities encourage communities to value and cherish the Black Sea environment advise local authorities, business and industry on environmental protection and conservation and why it is important provide independent comment to government on environmental protection and conservation matters relevant to the Biodiversity of the Black Sea and the sustainable development of the Georgian coastal zone and during the development of policies on these matters establish regional, national and international contacts and networks with appropriate organizations in order to develop and share best practice in environmental education
2 Mission BSEA aims to involve all sectors of society in public participation and decision making processes, try improve relations between general public and local authorities through good governance models, involving all sectors and stakeholder groups to find right and coordinable ways for sustainable development; emphasize main attention at poverty reduction; prevention creation of new environmental problems through working with all sectors of society. Types of activity There are four main directions of activities in following years : 1) Black Sea & Wetlands Projects aimed involvement of stakeholders in protection and sustainable use of Kolkhety wetlands through conservation and traditional business activities 2) Waste Programme - Through implementation of demonstration projects the association supports modernisation of waste collection and management process in Batumi, supports local authorities in preparation of relevant studies and strategies 3) Sustainable Development local Agenda 21 Programme - The Association tries through its educational &public awareness raising activities encourage promotion of the sustainable development, creation of civic society, involving different sectors and local community in decision-making process, development training programmes for local business development and increase collaboration between private sector and public. 4) Poverty reduction and grassroots development In partnership with CARE international the Association implements the West Georgia Community Mobilization Initiative in Ajara region. The main objective of the program is to mobilize up to 20 communities in the region through establishment and capacity building of Community Based Organizations. With support from the Japanese Embassy the organization has established the boarding school for the homeless children (100 individuals). For this purpose 3 floors of 4 storied building and entrance were refurbished and furnished and is currently functional Geographical area of coverage: 3 Regions in the Black Sea coast of Georgia: Adjaria (Kobuleti, Khelvachauri, Keda, Shuakhevi, Khulo) Guria (Lanchkhuti, Supsa, Ureki) Samegrelo (Poti, senaki, Abasha, Zugdidi,Khobi) Organization has representatives in 3 regons: Poti- Ketevan Kiria, tel Lanchkhuti- Ineza Kvachadze tel Samtredia-Marina Gegeshidze, 6, rustaveli str. tel
3 Services organized by the BSEA include: Field courses, eco-camps; Exhibitions and the info-us campaign; conferences, seminars, and workshops; Training; Public opinion research Logistical support Monitoring and evaluation Socio-economic assessment Institutional Strengthening Services Scientific research Community mobilization Infrastructure development (improvement of life condition of vulnerable group) conservation activity and beach clean-ups. The network was established in 1998, in Varna by 11 founder NGOs. BSEA was among them. Currently the network unites about 60 NGOs. In September 2004 the BSEA, with Paliastomi Lake, joined the Living Lakes network, as a candidate member. The network unites about 40 lakes from all over the world. The mission of the network is to enhance the protection, restoration and rehabilitation of lakes, wetlands, other freshwater bodies of the world and their catchment areas. The Living Lakes partnership promotes voluntary international collaboration among organizations that carry out projects benefiting lakes, wildlife, and people.
