3 President s Message May 2012 I am pleased how our officers, directors and members performed this year. This was a transitional year, in that some of them had to figure how to find additional time to do more for our chapter. But, we have survived and I feel the chapter is stronger because of it. Not once have I asked for help and was disappointed! We have accomplished quite a bit this year and are financially strong. We plan on making a major announcement soon about our scholarship fund! I am also excited about our new officers and directors that were elected recently as recommended. Good news for our chapter, most of our committee chair persons will remain for With only two meetings left this year, time has flown by. Of course when you get to be my age, time flies by faster every year! Hopefully, you have planned on attending our upcoming May 17th Family Style Italian/Greek Dinner Meeting at the Robin Inn. This again will incorporate a presentation on Sustainable Forest Products in your Designs (1.0 AIA LU HSW, SD). Dave Shupe Proud to be the President of The Richmond Chapter CSI! 7 CSI COMPLIANT DOCUMENT PROGRAM The CSI Compliant Document Program for Guide Specifications is a structured program for reviewing manufacturer guide specifications for conformance with the CSI formats and guidelines. The guide specification should conform to the intent expressed in the application guidelines provided in MasterFormat, SectionFormat and PageFormat. Other good specification practices as identified in the CSI Project Resource Manual or CSI Practice Guides (Project Delivery, Construction Specifications, and Contract Administration) should be used for a specification to receive approval for receipt of the CSI compliance designation. CSI s Compliant Document Review Program can verify that the guide specifications produced by a manufacturer are organized and easy-to-use for busy designers. Only guide specifications that adhere to the principles set forth in CSI s published best practices and guidelines will obtain the CSI stamp of approval. Our reviewers will determine if your guide specifications are organized and structured correctly, and if they properly apply CSI s standards and formats. If they do, you ll be able to add CSI s stamp of approval to your guide specifications, and show designers that the information you re offering them will save them time and effort. The CSI Compliant Document program is not an evaluation of the technical merits, correctness of the material submitted, or the appropriate use of the work result being specified in a project. What the CDR Logo Means The CSI Compliant Document Review logo indicates that a document that has been reviewed by a third-party, CSI-certified professional specifications practitioner for: Conformance with CSI formats Recommendations given in the CSI Practice Guides Adherence to the intended uses expressed in CSI publications including MasterFormat, SectionFormat, and PageFormat A CDR logo does not indicate CSI approval or endorsement of the technical merits or application of the work result being specified, or the appropriateness of using that technical solution in any project. What is the CDR? CSI s Compliant Document Review (CDR) Program verifies that submitted documents comply with CSI authoring and presentation guidelines and formats, thus saving the end user time and effort in understanding a document. Document review and approval is intended to convey assurance that approved documents meet minimum standards of quality in their authoring and presentation only. Compliant Document Review Program approval does NOT convey any form of CSI certification or endorsement, either implied or explicit, of the accuracy, currency, or suitability of any included language in the approved document, or of any underlying product, installation method, or the suitability of any language contained in any document for any specific project application. 9 Why take the CDT? by: Winnie Sung When I started working at Clark Nexsen Architecture and Engineering, I was told that all CN employees were encouraged to take the LEED AP exam as well as the CDT (construction document technologist) certification. In the Richmond CN office many of us studied for the LEED AP exam and some became certified. In some ways CDT was not a popular exam. Most architects knew how to put together a set of construction documents. So becoming a CDT did not seem important, and many shared this view. However, those who studied the CDT knew that the knowledge gained from reading the PRM (Project Resource Manual) and the practice guides was highly useful. The CDT certification covers the entire spectrum of project delivery from planning to facility management including the construction process, the contractual relationships, and the interpretation of construction documents. In the construction industry, sometimes documents are assembled individually without the understanding of its interrelationships. For example, what is included in a project manual? What are the differences between and among contract documents, construction documents, and procurement documents? Information should be located where the entire team - owner, designers, contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, etc. - knows how to retrieve it easily in every project. My favorite PRM chart is the wheel showing the relationship of Division 1 to other documents. The wheel emphasizes the concept of interrelationship between and among documents, with Division 1 as the center hub. Division 1 governs, expands, delineates, and cross-references the procurement requirements, contract requirements, specifications, and contract drawings. The different documents revolve around Division 1 in order to not duplicate information that is common to all sections. The construction document chart in the PRM has construction documents placed in a perfectly contained 3-Dimensional order of relationships. Each document has its proper location and the information is complementary to one another. The PRM also discusses language, writing style, vocabulary, sentence structure and symbols to use in construction specifications and drawings, for the purpose of enforcing the contract documents. Have you ever come across a situation where two spellings are equally correct, like facia and fascia? I came across this issue in our office, noticing that half of a set of drawings used facia and the other half used fascia. Half of the architects from my office told me that they had spelled it one way for years and the other half had spelled it the other way following dictionary and academic books. Did you know that the PRM actually has a rulings on which spellings should be used in construction documents? CSI is the original developer of the hierarchy of the formats for organization of construction information. The 50 divisions of the organized information used in Master Format is just one of the 15 tables in the Omni Classification. And Master Format refers, in turn, to the nine categories in the Uniformat of organizing systems and assemblies. Uniformat and Master Format are complementary in application, similar to how project manuals and cost estimating systems are complimentary. Consider taking the CDT certification exam. Studying for the exam will help you understand the interrelationship between and among documents. When there is a clear understanding of document relationships and organization, the complementary concept within the documents will make perfect sense. Consequently, precedence issues and redundancy in contract documents will be reduced, and claims and disputes will be minimized. This could be a proactive approach toward claims and disputes avoidance in the design and construction industry. Everyone who took the CSI certification exams told me that the information in the PRM is very practical and useful in the field of construction regardless of your area of expertise. When I meet a contractor, a product representative, a facility manager, an architect, an engineer, a building official, or a construction administrator with the CDT, CCPR, CCCA and CCS designation, I know these people take their knowledge in construction seriously.
