E D I T I O N 2 0 A U T U M N Wynyard Summer Fun Day For days prior to the event the organisers were weather watching.every site we consulted said rain but fortunately they were all wrong and the sun shone on the Wynyard Summer Fun day. The Summer Fun Day raised a total of 1, towards the funding of a community centre for Wynyard and lots of fun was had by all!. The children were kept entertained by the bouncy castle, Silly Sloths soft play, face painting and crafts supplied by Teesside High School. Fierce competition rained at the Welly Wanging and we actually had a full marks winner of the Wynyard Walkabout this year.l We were fortunate to have cash contributions from several sponsors including Grindon Parish Council, the NFU and Teesside High School and our thanks go to all of them. The event was organised by a dedicated team of local volunteer residents without whom this could not have been staged. Our thanks go also to Wynyard estate who allowed us the use of the
Cricket pitch and prepared the site for us in advance making sure it was clean and safe for all to use. Watch out for more fund-raising activities in the near future its going to take a lot of money to build a community centre for us all to use. Please also return your insert survey on Community Centre use so that we can reflect your views in its design. Thanks a Million folks! We were very fortunate to have several very supportive organisations and helpers for our annual Summer event. To the right is our roll call of honour listing those who donated cash, raffle prizes, help to prepare the site, printing services, strawberries and cream and of course their time and effort in the months prior to the fete and on the day. A big thanks to you all. 3 Demolition of Woodland on Wynyard Woods The demolition of woodland to the rear of Wynyard Woods Care Home and behind Harestones has commenced. The woodland has been cleared to make way for the new loop road that is to run from behind Harestones, through the fields to the south and west and rejoin the Wynyard Woods loop in the vicinity of the temporary school. This road will carry construction traffic for Wynyard Village developments, at the moment phases 1, 2 and 3 have detailed planning permission. This covers the new primary school permanent location, to go on the field to the west of Park Avenue, a Bellway development and Cussins development. There is no access into the woodland from Wynyard Woods at present. The curbs and pathway will need to be removed and a proper entrance constructed. Wynyard Residents Association do not have a timescale for this at the time of going to press. Please look out for updates on the website, A call for any budding Posties We deliver the Wynyard Matters magazine with the help of residents who volunteer. This saves us money and ensures that the magazine is actually delivered and not dumped by the roadside by disenchanted employees. However, we are always looking for more volunteers. Even if you can only commit to deliver the magazine to your road we would like to hear from you. Go on release your inner Postie and contribute to your community at the same time!! Let us know if you are able to help by ing us via the website page 3
Wynyard Book Group! Meetings are at 7.15pm on the first Monday of every month, unless it is a bank holiday, when we meet on the second. The books for 2017 are as follows: 4th September The Road to Little Dribbling Bill Bryson 2nd October The Muse Jessie Burton 6th November My Brilliant Friend Eleanor Ferrante 4th December Cartes Postales from Greece Victoria Hislop Please come and join us by going to /contact-us and sending your details. In October we choose the books for next year. Please bring us your choice of reading and enjoy the diversity. We look forward to hearing from you. Plant Spotters Needed Wynyard is special! We all know this however quite how special we have just had confirmed. A rare plant has been found in a Wynyard garden a Helliborines. We are asking all residents to become plant spotters and let us know if you have this plant in your garden or in any of the surrounding woodland and public spaces. Please use the Wynyard matters website to alert us as a matter of urgency as this is a rare and protected species we would like to give the RHS a full picture of the plant population. See the picture to the right for the plant you seek. page 4
Wynyard Broadband Situation still no definitive answers!! It seems as though this issue has been on our agenda forever and although some parts of Wynyard have had a significant improvement in their broadband reliability and speed there are some residents who still suffer slow and inconsistent broadband and have no access to the Superfast options. Grindon Parish Council have been instrumental in achieving the successes so far and are still labouring on our behalf to obtain further improvement. With this in mind the Parish Council wrote to our local MP Alex Cunningham to ask for his help in trying to get the latest update on progress. The following are extracts taken directly from his response; Thank you for contacting me regarding the slowness of internet speeds in the Wynyard parish area and the specific streets that were having the most issues. On receipt of your query, I contacted BT and now have received the following information from Matthew Evans, High level complaints - Customer resolutions for BT Openreach: I m sorry to read that some residents are experiencing problems with slow internet speeds, and appreciate that superfast broadband would bring significant benefits to this part of Alex s constituency. I ve looked into this. We ve said that our fibre broadband rollout is strictly commercial. As you ve pointed out in your , Wolviston exchange which serves the area has been upgraded. This was done with support from the Digital Durham BDUK project in which BT is a delivery partner. Its aim is to deploy fibre broadband in areas not covered by private commercial plans. After reading your , I can see that you already know that there are three cabinets that serve the residents of Wynyard, and that some residents are not served by a cabinet as they have exchange only (EO) lines. Each of the cabinets have been upgraded by the Digital Durham programme. I can also see that you know why some residents receive better speeds than others (due to the length of their phone line between their premises and the fibre cabinet). Technical solutions such as Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), extending the fibre cable route to bring it closer to the area/community or deploying alternative technology are being implemented in many areas with long lines or EO lines, but because they are economically challenging, they are usually only deployed via the public funding route. To help, I ve contacted one of my colleagues who s involved with Digital Durham. She s told me that the project team have discussed Wolviston many times and page 5
have looked at possible solutions. She s also confirmed that you re correct in saying that a small amount of Rural Community Broadband Funding (RCBF) from the DCMS was left over from phase one, and Digital Durham are investigating the potential for it to be moved to phase two to fund a new cabinet in Wynyard that will address some of the longer line and EO line issues. As you know, this is still in the discussion/costing phase, so there isn t any further information that can be shared at present. If they haven t already done so, I suggest the residents involved here let the Digital Durham project team know of their requirement and keep in touch with them for future updates. They re responsible for the delivery of the fibre programme in this area. Which areas are upgraded, likely timescales and all communications are via their website: As we can see the issues are ongoing and the authorities are very aware of these however no timescales are even mentioned here. This issue has been, once again, put on the agenda for the next WRA meeting where a suggestion will be made for an approach by Grindon Parish Council on our behalf to Digital Durham. 10 Excavation at Wynyard Woods Country Park Building work has commenced on the Dere Street site to the west of Manorfields and north of Blackwood. Dere Street development gets underway The area known as the Wynyard Woods Country Park, the grassland enclosed within the Wynyard Woods loop road, is being excavated to allow the laying of surface water drains for the new development. Wynyard Residents Association has been assured by Wynyard Estate Services that the ground will be reinstated fully once pipe laying and groundworks are completed. page 10
