2 Highlights from Shorts for Hospice 2017 ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN The Shorts for Hospice Annual Appeal kicks off on Friday 6 April 2018 across the wider Whangarei area. North Haven s Appeal helps to raise funds for and awareness of Hospice and the service it provides in our community. On Friday 6 April we are encouraging locals of all ages to get their Loud, Big and Little shorts on for the day, to challenge their friends and colleagues to have a fun day together and to learn more about their local Hospice and its operations. Shorts for Hospice happens in many different ways around New Zealand. We like to keep our event fun and inclusive so we don t charge an entry fee. By registering you automatically go in the draw to win a morning tea shout for your team or another team nominated by you (no larger than x25 people). Prizes this year are restricted to the one main draw because we think your reward is having fun together! Over the past two years we have received tremendous support from cafes and other businesses around town and Kiwi North. This year it s our turn to make the winning team morning tea to say thanks a million for playing and helping us out.

3 STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO SHORTS FOR HOSPICE 1. Check out your Registration Pack We have supplied you with poster, stickers and a donation box to help make 6 April awesome. Please contact us if you have any questions. 2. Plan your team day for Friday 6 April. Check out the list on the next page for ideas to raise money for Hospice through this event. 3. Get those Loud, Little and Big shorts out and have fun Don t forget to give everyone wearing shorts a sticker, so others understand their crazy attire! You could have a bit of fashion police fun for those who forget! 4. Collect evidence Share the fun you are all having and get snapping on those cameras. Send us your photos by Monday 9 April at noon for us to post them on our Facebook and website pages (with your permission of course). We will need evidence that you played when we draw the winner at 2pm on Friday 13 April! 5. How to send us your fun - raising donations Collect all of your money together and ensure it gets to North Haven Hospice safely before 13 April by using one of the following steps: For businesses, please make an internet banking transfer into our account: North Haven Hospice Society Inc Please use the word SHORTS plus the registration number provided. Make an online donation via our website using a credit card. Please use the words SHORTS plus the registration number provided on the front of your Registration pack. Call us to collect your donations anytime during the following week. Please ask for Brian or Karen on the Fundraising team. 4 FUN -RAISING ideas If you re short on fundraising ideas, check out this list below for inspiration. Simply ask everyone to wear shorts on 6 April and bring in a donation (you can choose to stipulate an amount). Ask your organization /boss to match the money that you raise Run a raffle or a sweepstake A day off - ask your boss to donate a day off and raffle it off to staff yeah right! Start a give a little or everyday hero page so your group and supporters can donate online Organise a garage sale or second hand shorts swap in the office Have a muffin bakes or a morning tea on the day Break the Balloon - A fun game, where you put prize slips inside balloons, blow them up and sell them off. When they ve all been sold everyone can pop them and see what they ve won! Auction of Promises - You and your friends can auction your promises (e.g. to make tea for a week, come in to work 30 minutes earlier etc.). Every promise fulfilled gets a donation. Trade your shorts on the day silent bids work nicely! Make sure you have something else to wear home as you might be short-less at the end of the day! If you have been given a fold up donation box (as in the photo) you might like to also collect funds from customers before and after the 6 April. Make sure that your box is secure if you leave it on a counter. AFTER THE EVENT We will want to share with you how much money was raised through this campaign but it will take around a week to count up the total raised funds. Once we have a figure, we will write to you thanking you for your support and announce the total raised funds. We will thank you and all of the other businesses who participated online via our website and Facebook, tagging you if we can so it s important that you let us know if you have a Facebook page so that we can like you. Don t forget to pack your shorts up somewhere safe, ready for next year!

5 A SNAP SHOT of North Haven Hospice episodes of care Last year we supported 559 individual patients who needed specialist palliative care at home, in aged care facilities, in the hospital and in the NHH in-patient unit. 179 admissions 179 patients had admissions to the IPU (some more than one time) for symptom management, respite care (both booked and acute) and for terminal care visits We made 4071 visits to patients living in the community. The majority of these were home visits undertaken by the community nursing team, but patients were also seen in aged care facilities and in Whangarei hospital. Visits were also undertaken by the medical team, counsellor, social worker, chaplain and Te Tumu Manaaki. 445 new patients As in the previous years the majority of the patients referred to our service came from staff at Whangarei Hospital, followed by referrals from GPs, self-referrals or referrals from relatives and those from other agencies. Over 114,000 volunteer hours We have more than 530 volunteers who gave a significant amount of time to North Haven Hospice over the past year. More than 335 volunteers work at our Hospice shops and new Processing Centre with 195 fulfilling a range of roles across the organisation. These other roles primarily include: working in the IPU and with community based patients and their carers; supporting the Living Well Programme; writing life reflections; Nuturing Touch massage; assisting with fundraising and advocacy events; providing administrative and staff support; gardening; floral artwork and other crafts; community driving and delivering equipment. If you re short of shorts then check out our Hospice Shop on the corner of John and Robert Streets - they have funky shorts at reduced prices! Get out some old daggy, baggy or saggy shorts and re-invent them team them with normal work attire for the NY look!

6 MORE ABOUT NORTH HAVEN HOSPICE Te Korowai Humarie At North Haven Hospice we provide care and support for those who are facing a life limiting illness across the wider Whangarei region. Our boundaries extend from Bland Bay to the north; Mangawhai Heads to the south; and Maungaturoto to the west. Our specialist clinical care team works closely with a wide range of other health care practitioners and providers to ensure that our patients and their families/whanau receive complete care which embraces their physical, emotional, social, cultural and spiritual needs. Most of our care takes place out in the community, in private homes and residential care facilities, with shorter term care provided, when needed, in our In Patient Unit (IPU) in Whangarei. As a centre of expertise for palliative care in Northland, we also work closely with Hospice Kaipara, Hospice Mid Northland and the Far North Community Hospice. North Haven Hospice receives approximately 64% of its annual operating costs from the Northland District Health Board. The balance of operational funding is generated by our two Hospice shops, and through donations bequests, fundraising events and grants. Our hospice services are provided free of charge. Our place Located high on the hills of Tikipunga, the buildings of Hospice overlook the historic Paranui Valley - a place rich in history where the sick and injured were sent for respite, recuperation and convalescence during the land wars many years ago. This wairua threads through all aspects of hospice service many years on. It empowers our commitment to deliver the highest standard of specialist palliative care within an environment of warmth and compassion, both at North Haven Hospice and also out in our community. Our community At Hospice we recognise the generous support provided in many ways by our community: our more than 600 volunteers, our businesses, community groups and the many individuals who ensure that, together, we continue to provide hospice care free of charge in our community.
