1 JOB PACK Communications & Development Manager Lighthouse Full time contract: 26,000-28, per annum, dependent on experience Hours: 37.5 hours per week Deadline for Applications: 12pm, Monday 5 March 2018 Summary We are looking for an ambitious and influential Communications & Development Manager to join Lighthouse and become an integral part of our Senior Management team. This is a fantastic opportunity for the right candidate to implement strategic planning, boost entrepreneurial activity and income, initiation, and optimising growth to Lighthouse. Duties will include identifying opportunities to communicate impact through our commissions, residencies, exhibitions, campaigns and events. The role includes developing creative content and strong copywriting across all Lighthouse platforms. About Us Lighthouse is an arts and culture organisation that connects new developments in art, technology, science and society. We produce commissions, exhibitions, events and education and talent development schemes that support new contemporary art, digital culture, music and film. Our mission is to enable digital culture to act as a catalyst to enliven established places and interpret how they are used. Our programmes reveal new ways of presenting artists and creative industries and how they can be adopted as a way of enhancing digital technology to cross boundaries and disciplines. Current projects include Guiding Lights, the UK s leading mentoring scheme for filmmakers, Last Dance, a programme that examines the creative and social impact of club culture, and international residency programmes aimed at creatives looking to develop their practice and build an audience. Lighthouse is based in central Brighton, in the heart of the North Laine. As well as housing our own exhibitions and events, our building offers a range of spaces available to hire for events such as workshops, meetings, talks, screenings and receptions. We also host office suites for creative companies and currently have eight companies working in the arts and creative industries, working alongside us in the building. 1

2 Job Overview The Communications & Development Manager will work with the Executive team on the management of fundraising and business development to maximise Lighthouse s impact, deliver benefits to our stakeholders, and contribute to building our network of partners by helping to develop new and stronger alliances locally, nationally and internationally. Role of the Communications & Development Manager 1. Implement a communications and marketing strategy to realise Lighthouse s objectives and maximise revenue. 2. Raise Lighthouse s profile, increase recognition, and build attendance and engagement on all levels regionally, nationally and internationally. 3. Support the Executive Team with business development activities that contribute towards fundraising and income generation. Responsible to/for: The Communications and Development Manager is responsible to Lighthouse's Artistic Director & CEO The Communications and Development Manager is responsible for the Communications & Operations Assistant Communications & Brand Development Produce and deliver an integrated Marketing and Communications strategy Create Communication Plans, which include marketing and outreach campaigns, for our programme, commissions, exhibitions, events and talent development schemes Manage media partnerships, and identify and establish cross-promotional opportunities Work collaboratively with team members on best practice, championing audience development, access and equality Oversee data protection management, ensuring that Lighthouse is compliant with relevant GDPR legislation Manage and lead design of promotional materials including print and online Work with the Executive team to strengthen fundraising campaigns and sponsorship packages Produce high quality content that engages through creative storytelling, and generate conversation that relates to the wider cultural landscape 2

3 Maintain Lighthouse s visual identity across all communications and marketing, and improve the organisation s identity through new branding Develop and monitor the Communications budget, working with Lighthouse s Executive Director Work with the Executive team to source and manage designers to provide flexible assets across the organisation Sponsorship & Commercial Development Research initiatives to generate income through our website, implementing facilities for online giving working with a web developer, and overseeing the strategy for online ticket sales Develop, plan and evaluate campaigns to generate income through venue hire and other commercial assets, as required Manage and develop the Fundraising Strategy and ensure it is well implemented Lead on fundraising initiatives such as fundraising events, crowdfunding, appeals, where necessary Identify and build relationships with sponsors and funders to generate income, as well as securing donors Write funding proposals, letters of introduction, prepare background information and materials for cultivation activities Develop new initiatives for creative and innovative partnerships and work alongside the team on sponsorship proposals Manage relationships with sponsors, supporters and funders, as appropriate Lead on Trusts and Foundations and Corporate Partner relationships Press & Media Relations Develop and maintain local, national and international press and media, growing Lighthouse s list of relevant contacts including online, print, radio, TV, bloggers and cultural influencers Research potential new media partners, managing relationships and devising and delivering a strategic plan for content, press events and other PR initiatives Work with the Lighthouse team, relevant partners and audience agencies/consultants, where appropriate, to build project-specific audiences and build audience diversity, through targeted project campaigns to reach young people and diverse communities Oversee audience qualitative and quantitative feedback across the organisation and work with the Executive Director on audience segmentation and reporting Management & Administration Manage the Communications & Operations Assistant, including supporting them with planning and managing workflow. Identify relevant training opportunities and take part in performance review meetings Maintain and update the Lighthouse website Issue reports to the Board of Trustees, as required 3

4 General Work closely and flexibly with the team to deliver the aims of the Lighthouse Work in accordance with Lighthouse s health and safety, and equality and diversity policies. Represent the organisation at meetings, events and functions Attend training, conferences and other networking and development events, to enhance relevant skills Perform any other duties as reasonably required by the Executive Team Person specification Essential Experience of working in a similar lead communications/marketing/development position Excellent communication, planning, organisational skills with attention to detail Strategic thinking and implementation skills Track record of developing and maintaining successful relationships with external agencies and stakeholders Experience in developing and managing successful marketing and sales campaigns Experience of preparing and delivering written fundraising applications Creating and developing successful relationships with funders Digital marketing experience, in particular across social media platforms and google analytics Experience in briefing and influencing press and media contacts to achieve positive news Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills with a track record of producing compelling narratives to a range of audience Attention to detail with strong copywriting skills Experience of setting and managing targets and budget, and financial management and other KPI s Computer literate, such as Microsoft Office and databases Willing to work flexibly some evenings and weekends, as required Desirable Experience of leading negotiations and influencing key decisions at a senior level Line management experience Knowledge and interest in development in the arts, film and education sectors Initiating Individual Giving Programmes such as memberships and Patrons schemes Garnering Corporate Support and Sponsorship Reporting to a Board of Trustees 4

Hours of Work Standard office hours are 9.30am-6pm, but occasional evening and weekend work may also be required. We support, commission, develop and produce radical new programmes of contemporary art, digital culture, film and music. Our programmes are experimental, experiential, playful, political and critical. We support work that jolts us, moves us, and changes our perspective on the world. From vanguard contemporary art and radical new music, to film production and social design, we develop inclusive programmes to inspire, educate, and innovate. Lighthouse is part of Arts Council England s National Portfolio of Organisations (NPO), and has been asked to take on a strategic leadership role for digital arts for the South East region. Lighthouse Programmes Our programme includes a diverse set of activities such as commissions, exhibitions, talks, conferences, screenings, performances, education, and professional development programmes. We work with a range of creative professionals, including artists, designers, filmmakers, musicians and technologists. What unites all of our work is a passionate interest in contemporary culture, new technologies, and how artists can help shape the future. Exhibitions and Commissions We have presented or co-produced commissions and exhibitions by numerous award winning contemporary artists, as well as rising stars in world of progressive contemporary art practice and digital culture. Artists include Roger Hiorns, Holly Herndon, David Blandy, Hito Steyerl, Martha Rosler, Metahaven, James Bridle, Mariele Neudecker, Semiconductor, Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard, and Trevor Paglen. Events Lighthouse runs a dynamic programme of events that explore new ideas within contemporary culture, music, art, film, and media. Our events comprise talks; debates, seminars, networking events, conferences and screenings. 6

7 Guiding Lights Lighthouse runs the UK s leading mentoring programme for filmmakers, Guiding Lights, which supports film talent by connecting them with some of the industry s most prominent names. The programme provides upcoming filmmakers with high-level mentoring, complemented by a range of training and networking activities. Mentors include Danny Boyle, Barbara Broccoli, Sam Mendes, Alison Owen, Alex Garland, Joanna Hogg and Kenneth Branagh. Lighthouse Residencies Lighthouse residency programme is our onsite incubator. The core is interdisciplinary practice, and collaboration between residents, partners and the wider Lighthouse community, most recently, ReFramed - a project development programme explored immersive and interactive storytelling. Lighthouse supports an emerging breed of practitioner working at the intersection of digital art, design, technology, science, film and the wider creative industries. Residents feature in our wider programme, through associated events, such as pop-up exhibitions, hack days, screenings and regular show and tell sessions. Education and Professional Development A key part of our work is education and professional development. This is expressed in long-form professional development initiatives such as Guiding Lights, but also short-form activities such as technology labs and courses. A key strand of our work at Lighthouse is about empowering the digital artists and critical engineers of tomorrow. Lighthouse also runs a Masters degree - the MA in Digital Media Arts - in partnership with the University of Brighton. The MA is taught on-site at Lighthouse and at the University of Brighton's Grand Parade campus. Lighthouse works in close partnership with the University to ensure the MA is providing the best possible training for artists and arts professionals wishing to seek a career in the creative industries. The MA provides expert education in the subject areas of interaction design, programming, digital film, installation, public art and interactive art. Lighthouse Venue Our venue is a former printworks, located on Kensington Street in the heart of Brighton s North Laine, the city s vibrant cultural quarter. As well as housing our own exhibitions, talks and screenings, it is available for private hire. We have six tenants within our office suites, all of whom work within the creative industries: Storythings, digital agency, Culture24, cultural digital publishers, who work across the arts, heritage, education and tourism sectors, Liquid Light, an award winning web design agency and South East Dance, a national dance development organisation. 7

8 Lighthouse History Lighthouse was founded in Brighton in For its first ten years it operated as a small community based film workshop, before diversifying into training and media technology in the mid-1990s. In 2005 it purchased it s premises in Kensington Street. Lighthouse now occupies an important strategic position at the intersection of the arts, media and creative industry sectors. Collaboration and partnership working with all of these sectors is central to the way we work. Governance Lighthouse is guided by a Board of Trustee Directors, a voluntary body that has legal responsibility for the overall governance and management of Lighthouse. The Board brings a wide range of skills and knowledge to the organisation. The Chair of the Board is Antony Mayfield who was appointed in February The other Trustees are: Ken Smith, Antony Gostyn, Antonia Blocker, Helen Kennedy, Rifa Thorpe-Tracey and Tony Pilgrim. The Directors of Lighthouse report to the Trustees at Board Meetings, once every two months.
