3 Dear All, It is my pleasure to introduce to you the group of FIU undergraduate students who are preparing to go to The Gambia during the week of their spring break (March 10-17, 2013) to teach in middle and high schools of Banjul, The Gambia capital city. Each student will develop a syllabus for one week of teaching in one assigned classroom in the presence of the Gambian teacher. The classroom assigned to them will depend of the FIU student's major. María Camila Bernal and Aji Sain Jeng are the two student leaders of that group. AADS is fully supporting their project. In order to make that trip a reality, they are engaging in a number of fundraising activities: car washing, design of a T-shirt that will soon be on sale, etc. You could find more information about their initiative (they have put together a nice video) and find the link to their donation page by clicking on the image below. Hopefully, you'll be able to support them. I'll take advantage of this opportunity to also remind everyone that AADS is organizing a summer C 2013 study abroad program in Senegal and The Gambia (please click here for more information). Jean

Appearing annually in Choice s January issue, this prestigious list of publications reflects the best in scholarly titles and attracts extraordinary attention from the academic library community. The 2012 feature includes 644 titles in 54 disciplines and subsections. Please see below for the review published by Choice. Latin America & the Caribbean Black social movements in Latin America: from monocultural mestizaje to multiculturalism, ed. by Jean Muteba Rahier. Palgrave Macmillan, p bibl index afp ISBN , $90.00; ISBN , $ Outstanding Title! Reviewed in 2012 dec CHOICE. New from Palgrave Macmillan In Latin America, indigenous peoples, not African descendants, have historically set the agenda for struggles for ethnic identities and associated social, cultural, and territorial rights. As a result, Afro-Latin American movements, as well as research on them, have lagged behind their indigenous counterparts. This outstanding, accessible volume goes a long way toward closing that gap. A series of essays from leading scholars on Central America, the Andes, and Brazil provide probing investigations into the challenges facing black social movements in the second decade of the 21st century. Catherine Walsh contributes a key, insightful study that examines how the historic invisibility of Afro-Latin Americans is perpetuated in contemporary policies. Governments have often tacked on rights for African descendants to those previously granted to indigenous peoples, but now Afro-Latin Americans are emerging out of that indigenous shadow. The volume includes interviews with two leading activists, Alexandra Ocles in Ecuador and Maria Inês Barbosa in Brazil. A landmark study that provides a model for future research in a historically marginalized field. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels/libraries. -- M. Becker, Truman State University

14 New book: Adiós, Niassa Trece días a través de Mozambique Mauricio Bergstein is a writer in the Spanish language and just published his book Adios Niassa-Trece dias a travez de Mozambique- (So long Niassa-Thirtheen days through Mozambique). The book tells the story of three people travelling through Mozambique in a quest to reach out to rural schools there. One of them was born in Beira, Mozambique and lived there for 15 years and his family was linked to the story of the independence of the Country.

15 New book: The Maid Narratives Black Domestics and White Families in the Jim Crow South by Katherine Van Wormer by David Walter Jackson, III by Charletta Sudduth The Maid Narratives shares the memories of black domestic workers and the white families they served, uncovering the often intimate relationships between maid and mistress. Based on interviews with over fifty people both white and black these stories deliver a personal and powerful message about resilience and resistance in the face of oppression in the Jim Crow South. The housekeepers, caretakers, sharecroppers, and cooks who share their experiences in The Maid Narratives ultimately moved away during the Great Migration. Their perspectives as servants who left for better opportunities outside of the South offer an original telling of physical and psychological survival in a racially oppressive caste system: Vinella Byrd, for instance, from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, recalls how a farmer she worked for would not allow her to clean her hands in the family s wash pan. These narratives are complemented by the voices of white women, such as Flora Templeton Stuart, from New Orleans, who remembers her maid fondly but realizes that she knew little about her life. Like Stuart, many of the white narrators remain troubled by the racial norms of the time. Viewed as a whole, the book presents varied, rich, and detailed accounts, often tragic, and sometimes humorous. The Maid Narratives reveals, across racial lines, shared hardships, strong emotional ties, and inspiring strength. Please click here to visit the book s website.

18 Call for Papers: 7th Biennial Conference of the Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora (ASWAD) Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic - October 30 - November 2, 2013 NEW DEADLINE: February 1, 2013 Transformative Visions: Confronting Change and Creating Opportunity in Africa and the African Diaspora Creative response to change and challenge has long been a hallmark of the African diaspora experience, from the multiple ways enslaved peoples carved autonomous spaces across the Americas and Caribbean, to the use of new technologies to move politics and re-imagine communities throughout Africa and the African diaspora today. In 2013, the seventh biennial conference of the Association for the Study of the World Wide African Diaspora (ASWAD) will take place in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic. The conference aims to address how transformative visions, past and present, have been brought to bear on the challenges confronting peoples of Africa and the African diaspora, from historically overlooked individuals to mass movements. How have African diaspora people marshalled activism, spirituality, creativity, and the unique resources of diaspora to re-fashion challenges into new opportunities? How are diasporic solidarities and fissures affected by global conflicts and movements? ASWAD seeks creative explorations of diaspora through innovative framings, methodologies, and discourses as we address these questions. We welcome submissions from all disciplines on both historical and contemporary topics and on all geographic areas including Africa, the Americas and Caribbean, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. Paper and panel proposals that incorporate new categories of diasporic analysis and that stimulate discourse across traditional boundaries are encouraged, as are roundtables and panels on diaspora and comparative diaspora studies. By taking place in the Dominican Republic, the 2013 ASWAD conference will highlight the history and visionary nature of black and anti-racist thought as it has emerged within the Caribbean. We will honor the Dominican intellectuals, activists, and artists who are working to transform the historical tensions with Haiti and the denial of black ancestry among its mostly mulatto and black population, along with their counterparts in Haiti. The struggle against racism as it has been articulated throughout the African

19 diaspora will be a key dimension of our explorations of transformative visions. Sessions and events will be structured to maximize exchange between Dominican and visiting participants. The conference is hosted by the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), a Dominican university dedicated to supporting African Diaspora studies and to bridging the intellectual and activist communities of the Dominican Republic and Haiti, and is co-sponsored by Rutgers University. Possible paper and panel topics include but are not limited to: Challenges and Opportunities in an Era of Global Conflict Historic Relations between Haiti and the Dominican Republic Social Media and the African Diaspora The Role of Religion and Spirituality in the Development of the African Diaspora Political Reform and Islam in Africa and the Diaspora The African Legacy in the Dominican Republic The Arab Spring in Africa Chinese and Indian Relationships with Africa and its Diaspora Assessing 50 Years of Independence in the Anglophone Caribbean Race and the Barack Obama Presidency The African Diaspora in Europe African Diasporas on the African Continent Gendering African Diaspora Studies The Imperative of Transformative Visions for Africa and the Diaspora within a Global Context Submission Information: Proposals may be sent to: "ASWAD2013@gmail.com". ASWAD strongly encourages panel proposals, but individual papers will also be given consideration. Panel proposals must include the names and addresses of all participants. Deadline for submission: February 1, 2013 Announcements of acceptance: March 15, 2013 Special collaborative initiative: In an effort to encourage exchange and dialogue, ASWAD may invite Dominican scholars to be included on panels where appropriate. Membership: All panelists must be registered for the conference. Conference rates are discounted for ASWAD members. 20 Call for Submissions The Project Journal Spring 2013 We would like to announce a call for submission of both photo and written material for the Spring installment of the Afrolatin@ Project Journal section. In this issue we would like to look at ways Afrolatin@s affirm their identity, cultural patrimony and representation and explore the possibilities using new digital and mobile technology to complement or enrich these efforts. We invite everyone who would like to contribute to send us your photographs (See Part I) or a written piece (See Part II) of a maximum of 500-1,500 words by January 28, We especially welcome submissions from the community including academics, students, activists/organizations, non-profits and NGO s who wish to share the ways in which they affirm their identity, cultural patrimony and cultural representation. Please be sure to include your name, along with your organization s name with your submission. Part I. Mobile Photo Submissions: #QuieneSomos - Does Tourism Advertising Reflect the Multicultural Communities of Latin America and the Caribbean? We hope to encourage everyone to put on their citizen journalists hats by looking more closely at the images of people and cultural symbols shown in travel/tourism advertising. Using your mobile phones, we are asking for your help in taking pictures of any travel/tourism images that show people or cultural symbols from Latin America and/or the Caribbean. As we find and take these pictures we should consider: 1) Do these images have any effect on how I view my own national/cultural identity? 2) Do these ads or commercials show a multicultural/pluriethnic community? Who Can Participate?: Everyone can, no matter where you are WHAT?: Join our mobile project called #QuieneSomos, where we ask you, the community, to use your mobile phone cameras to take pictures and become citizen journalists/consumer advocates. WHERE?: Anywhere you see a travel or commercial advertisement that have actual people in them i.e., on television, in a magazine or newspaper, on a taxi, a building, a bus anywhere. WHEN: Until January 28, 2013 WHY?: Advertising often has a powerful impact on how we perceive ourselves, other people, places and cultures. By looking at the images collected via mobile phone, we can begin to develop a broader understanding of the impact of travel and tourism advertisement on how we

21 perceive our own cultural identity and how others perceive our cultures especially today when cultural tourism has become so popular. It is important to look at whether cultural symbols and identities that are used in and exported via travel advertising, accurately reflect the multicultural/pluriethnic makeup of Latin America and the Caribbean. HOW TO SEND?: It s easy! Take a picture with your mobile phone camera whenever you see a travel or tourism ad/commercial in or about Latin America or the Caribbean then post it to or on Twitter, using the hashtag: #quienesomos Just indicate where the pic comes from and the date ("00/00/00"). We will collect and periodically post the pictures on our blog. Part II: Written Journal Submissions (Maximum 500-1,500 words) Due January 28, 2013 In the last 50 years, Afrolatin@ and Afrodescendant movements in Latin America, the Caribbean and the US, have used cultural patrimony and identity affirmation to create a space for social recognition and greater representation. Examples include: Nicomedes Santacruz and Victoria Santa Cruz (Peru) who used theater/dance to develop a renewed Afro-Peruvian identity; Manuel Zapata Olivella (Colombia), and Quince Duncan (Costa Rica) who affirmed black identity through their writings; the preservation of quilombo traditions in Brazil, Garifuna language in Honduras and the Festival del Caribe in Mexico. In many cases, affirmation of cultural patrimony has proven to be important in Afrolatin@ efforts to achieve greater level of participation in political, economic and social arenas. Given the rapid global adoption of mobile and digital technology we hope to explore how Afrolatin@ communities can and do use mobile/digital technology to seek balance and a voice in the representations of cultural identity in media and state initiatives. Web 2.0 tools such as Skype, Facebook, Twitter, Blackberry Messenger, WhatsApp, Viber and others seem promising in encouraging regional cooperation, diversity of representation and leveraging of local content production for those within the community. Can digital/mobile technology help community efforts to raise awareness about and preserve cultural patrimony and identity? Suggested topics include: *Afrolatin@ traditional cultural symbols/representations *Afrolatin@ popular cultural symbols/representations *Connecting cultural affirmation and political/economic representation *Unifying cultural patrimony and technology: Latin America, the Caribbean & the US *Using culture to teach digital literacy / using digital literacy to teach culture *Tourism: Economic opportunity or cultural exploitation?

Our anthology, Tough Times in America, aims to provide a platform for telling these stories. We will accept true stories, as well as fictionalized versions of real life events. This collection aims to preserve and document narrative accounts of the anger, fear and frustration that most Americans are feeling due to the recession which has resulted in massive job losses, loss of homes, loss of healthcare, reduced retirement benefits, etc. We also hope to document the hope and gratitude that bloom even in the midst of despair true testaments to the tenacity of the human spirit. Significantly, we would like this collection to reflect the diversity of America in the 21 st century, and so we welcome submissions from people from all
