8 Announcements: Fellow Students and Professors, Here is a great event featuring our new faculty member Dr. Mark Padilla. SAGGSA Colloquium Committee Presents: Border-crossing and the politics of body modification among Puerto Rican transgender women: Findings from the TRANS-forma project Lecture by Dr. Mark Padilla November 29th, :30 PM FIU Modesto A Maidique Campus LC 110 Drawing on ethnographic observations and qualitative in-depth interviews with transgender women from the TRANS-forma project - the first NIH-funded ethnographic project on transgender persons in Puerto Rico - Dr. Padilla uses the metaphor of border crossing as a framework to discuss both the process of gender transitioning within local social networks and the transnational field of transitioning practices and commodities that mediate body modification practices for Puerto Ricans, such as illegal silicone and hormone injection, global sources of knowledge about trans-genderism, and medical migrations for transitioning surgeries. Dr. Padilla explores ethnographically-informed recommendations for the reduction of structural and health-related vulnerabilities for transgender women in Puerto Rico. Dr. Padilla, new to the FIU GSS department, is a medical anthropologist with cross-training and experience in public health both domestically and internationally. His work is located within a synergy between anthropology and the more applied concerns of public health. As an anthropologist trained in ethnographic methods, globalization, and critical medical anthropology, he has sought to trouble the terms of discourse and "intervention" in public health, and to bring structural inequalities and material processes into greater focus in public health. Specifically, he has used this analytic lens in his work on HIV/AIDS and sexuality in Latin America and the Caribbean. The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call To view the flyer for this lecture, please click here.

17 Call for Submissions There are millions of Americans from all walks of life who are going through a tough time. Many have been severely affected by the economic recession and can neither pay their bills, nor afford the basics such as food and medicine. Our anthology, Tough Times in America, aims to provide a platform for telling these stories. We will accept true stories, as well as fictionalized versions of real life events. This collection aims to preserve and document narrative accounts of the anger, fear and frustration that most Americans are feeling due to the recession which has resulted in massive job losses, loss of homes, loss of healthcare, reduced retirement benefits, etc. We also hope to document the hope and gratitude that bloom even in the midst of despair true testaments to the tenacity of the human spirit. Significantly, we would like this collection to reflect the diversity of America in the 21 st century, and so we welcome submissions from people from all ethnicities, racial, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Submissions should be between and words in length, typed and double-spaced, Times New Roman or similar sized font (12 point). Stories must be previously unpublished in any form, including print, web etc. Each story should be identified within the geographic location/landmark of the city in which it is set. We want to show that these experiences are common to many Americans, regardless of race and ethnicity, so the cultural component is vital.
