3 Don t miss the last Senegal & The Gambia Summer C 2013 Information Session! Join us on Thursday, January 17th, 2013 from 3:30-4:45 PM at the Labor Center room 309 for our last Senegal and The Gambia Summer C 2013 Information Session! This information session will be the last one offered for the Senegal & The Gambia Summer C program. It will serve as an opportunity for those interested to gain general information about this Study Abroad session, the scholarship opportunities, meet other interested students, and much more. Due to limited space, we encourage you to reserve your spot today by calling Reyni Valerio at (305) For more information about Senegal and The Gambia Summer C 2013, click here!
4 Dear All, It is my pleasure to introduce to you the group of FIU undergraduate students who are preparing to go to The Gambia during the week of their spring break (March 10-17, 2013) to teach in middle and high schools of Banjul, The Gambia capital city. Each student will develop a syllabus for one week of teaching in one assigned classroom in the presence of the Gambian teacher. The classroom assigned to them will depend of the FIU student's major. María Camila Bernal and Aji Sain Jeng are the two student leaders of that group. AADS is fully supporting their project. In order to make that trip a reality, they are engaging in a number of fundraising activities: car washing, design of a T-shirt that will soon be on sale, etc. You could find more information about their initiative (they have put together a nice video) and find the link to their donation page by clicking on the image below. Hopefully, you'll be able to support them. I'll take advantage of this opportunity to also remind everyone that AADS is organizing a summer C 2013 study abroad program in Senegal and The Gambia (please click here for more information). Jean

We invite you to join us as we commit to the future, reflect on the past, encourage our communities, and boldly blaze new trails! While proposals related to this theme are especially welcome, proposals addressing any topic of interest to the diverse membership of the National Black Graduate Student Association will be considered. Paper Competition SUBMISSION GUIDELINES We are soliciting research papers involving a single topic and explaining the issues, methodologies, and outcomes involved. Submissions will be automatically eligible for a cash prize of $200 for first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for third place. Competition winners and a selection of the best papers will be eligible for publication in Call and Response: The Scholarly Journal of the National Black Graduate Student Association Papers will be refereed by specially selected disciplinary and interdisciplinary professors and graduate students. 14 Call for Submissions There are millions of Americans from all walks of life who are going through a tough time. Many have been severely affected by the economic recession and can neither pay their bills, nor afford the basics such as food and medicine. Our anthology, Tough Times in America, aims to provide a platform for telling these stories. We will accept true stories, as well as fictionalized versions of real life events. This collection aims to preserve and document narrative accounts of the anger, fear and frustration that most Americans are feeling due to the recession which has resulted in massive job losses, loss of homes, loss of healthcare, reduced retirement benefits, etc. We also hope to document the hope and gratitude that bloom even in the midst of despair true testaments to the tenacity of the human spirit. Significantly, we would like this collection to reflect the diversity of America in the 21 st century, and so we welcome submissions from people from all ethnicities, racial, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Submissions should be between and words in length, typed and double-spaced, Times New Roman or similar sized font (12 point). Stories must be previously unpublished in any form, including print, web etc. Each story should be identified within the geographic location/landmark of the city in which it is set. We want to show that these experiences are common to many Americans, regardless of race and ethnicity, so the cultural component is vital. We welcome established as well as unpublished writers who would like to represent their experiences or the experiences of their friends and loved ones. Deadline for submissions is January 29, Please send your submissions to: Donna Aza Weir-Soley: (weirsole@yahoo.com) and Max Freesney Pierre (prrmax@yahoo.com).
