This event is sponsored by the Office of Institutional Diversity, International Student & Scholar Services, Sexual Violence Advocacy Support Center, and the Office of Equal Opportunity. The employee panel will examine how success is defined in the United States from a female perspective. Panelists will provide an overview of their career trajectory, current role, future goals, and what success means to them. DR. EDWARD W. Through its academic and administrative units, BSU offers high-quality global engagement programs and activities for students, faculty and staff. Global engagement at BSU embodies three core values: Excellence, Opportunity & Innovation. In 2001, the Office of International Programs was created in response to BSU's increasing demand for international opportunities in teaching, learning and service. Dr. Edward W. Minnock, former vice president for the Division of External Affairs, was a pioneer in expanding BSU's international programming during the office's first decade. On behalf of the The Minnock Institute for Global Engagement we would like to welcome MIGE's new visiting scholar, Irene Wei Wang. Harold Tavares, Assistant Director of International Relations and Special Programs, was appointed as a New Leader for Tomorrow by the Crans Montana Homeland & Global Security Forum. Harold will serve a three-year term helping to strengthen regional and national networks, promoting renewed international dialogue on behalf of the forum. Photo provided by Crans Montana Forum Congratulations to Allison Ford, a recipient of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizens who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university, to study or intern abroad. Allison will be teaching in Equador in Spring of '18. Stay tuned for a full feature story on Allison, Jiayi is an exchange student from Beijing Jiaotong University in China. Former exchange students told her BSU is a good place to learn about American culture and improve her English. Jiayi took their advice. You may recall Jiayi?s performance at the International Student & Scholar Services Farewell Celebration in December. She has been singing since she was in elementary school, and began singing lessons after entering college. Jiayi would like to pursue her master?s degree in the U.S. and expand her knowledge in the realm of second language teaching. It is her ultimate goal to teach speakers of other languages. From what we have witnessed, Jiayi will continue to rise as a student, and shine like the international star she is. details from the College of Education Service trip to Belize, and her accomplishments as a student at BSU. 4 Photo by Widmaer Fleuransaint, '18 M EET DANIELA BELICE: A BSU STUDENT HUM ANITARIAN Community Builder Volunteer Political Science and Sociology Major Daniela Belice is the epitome of a volunteer; she is a humanitarian. The Political Science and Sociology major is scheduled to graduate in May of 2018, and will be able to say she has maximized her experience at BSU volunteering, participating in service learning and studying abroad. As a participant of a photo voice project organized by Dr. Lisa Battaglino and Dr. Daniel Chase, Daniela recently volunteered at St. John?s Anglican Primary School in Belize City, Belize. The goal of this project was to help students identify strengths, weaknesses, and solutions to improve their communities in Belize. While in Belize, Daniela assisted first and second graders with taking pictures around the school?s neighborhood. She also helped with a renovation project at the school. Daniela also volunteered at the Good Samaritan?s shelter helping people with disabilities. Along with the other students, she sorted and distributed the donations brought from the U.S. to the shelter residents. Daniela has studied abroad in Israel and Trinidad. "The Israel travel course was an opportunity to increase my understanding of current cultural, historical and social issues within Israel with a focus on diversity and social justice. As a global citizen, my community service has helped me to gain a broader perspective regarding certain social issues. I see it as a privilege. I do not see it as something that I do to gain something in return, but rather I find a way to show my gratitude to God. I have been blessed with a second chance (I survived the 2010 earthquake). Now I am paying it forward." Daniela's experience studying abroad in Trinidad was focused on reforestation. She was part of a littering research team focused on the effects of litter on the environment, climate change, and the connection to St. Ann's watershed, a community located at heart of Trinidad. Upon graduation, Daniela plans to work with asylum seekers, detainees and children. ANNOUNCEM ENTS CONTINUED... The Journal of International Women?s Studies (JIWS) is an online, open-access, peer reviewed feminist journal that provides a forum for scholars, activists, and students to explore the relationships among theories of gender and sexuality and various forms of organizing and critical practice. The journal seeks both multidisciplinary and cross-cultural perspectives, and invites submissions in the form of scholarly articles, essays, book reviews, and works of fiction. In addition, the journal supports multi-media submissions through streaming audio capability, embedded video, and links to video sites to display short films and other visual materials. Through its diverse collection, the journal aims to create an opportunity for building bridges across the conventional divides of scholarship and activism,?western? and?third world? feminisms, professionals and students, and men and women. Toward this end, the editors welcome your constructive and insightful comments in response to our publications. JIWS sponsors an annual $300?$1,500 fellowship competition. 5 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT JOURNEY TO ROME For Elementary Education and Psychology major Julia Malita '19, studying abroad was not an option. One day, she decided to visit the Study Abroad office to hear about opportunities to study abroad in Rome, Italy. What she learned there inspired her to take the next step and become an exchange student at John Cabot University in Rome, Italy.?Living in Rome, far away from my normal routine, forced me to become comfortable in settings that were unfamiliar. Studying abroad was a once in a lifetime opportunity that gave me a valuable set of life skills I truly could not have learned in a classroom. As a double major studying Elementary Education and Psychology, Julia plans to persue a career as a elementary school teacher. Someday she will inspire her students to enrich their lives with impactful experiences as she has. "The best teacher is experience, and that is why studying abroad gave me the hands on tools to fully immerse myself in a new setting with people of various backgrounds from all over the world. It was an experience that enriched my perspective on the world we live in and one that I will cherish for the rest of my life.?
