1 CALL FOR ENTRIES The only contemporary art prize in Aotearoa New Zealand with ecology at its core. Artists are invited to research and respond to the Tāmaki Estuary, to underscore the ecological value of this vital waterway and encourage action against its pollution. With a total prize pool of $8,300 the winning artworks will be intelligent and innovative responses to ecology in the field of contemporary art. JUDGE JON BYWATER teaches at Elam School of Fine Arts, the University of Auckland, and is one of Aotearoa New Zealand s foremost contemporary art critics. His writing on art and music has appeared in national publications including Art New Zealand, Landfall, The Listener and Reading Room, and in British and American periodicals such as Afterall, Artforum, e-flux, Frieze, Mute, and Wire, as well as numerous monographs and catalogues. In the past ten years, he was curator of the inaugural Arts Foundation New Generation Award, has served twice as a Walters Prize juror, and as judge of the National Contemporary Art Award hosted by Waikato Museum.

5 CONDITIONS OF ENTRY 2 of 3 1. Eligibility: All New Zealand citizens and permanent residents over the age of 18 are eligible to enter. 2. Entries: a. To enter, send the following to exhibitions@uxbridge.org.nz before the deadline Sunday 19 June 2016, midnight: i. Completed entry form, including artist statement ii. High quality image(s) of the completed artwork (no more than 2MB) or a website link for video entries iii. Pay $20 entry fee to UXBRIDGE. Refer to entry form for payment details. b. You may submit multiple entries. Each entry must be accompanied by a separate entry form and the $20 entry fee. c. Collaborative artworks may be submitted as one entry by multiple artists. d. No changes to the entry, including the artwork and artist statement, will be accepted after the closing date. e. All entries must be for sale. f. The winning artwork will be gifted to and become property of the Auckland Council. 3. Accepted Media: Entries are invited from most disciplines of contemporary art including painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, video and other new media. Specifically excluded are live performance projects. 4. Size and Weight: Entries must not be larger than 2 metres in height, width and depth, including framing, and must not exceed 60kgs in weight. 5. Originality: a. Existing artworks are not eligible. All entries must be new, created especially for the. b. The applicant guarantees that the work is a one-off original and not of an edition. 6. Judging: a. Judging Criteria: i. Conceptual engagement: Artists are invited to research and respond to the Tāmaki Estuary, to underscore the ecological value of this vital waterway and encourage action against its pollution. ii. Artistic merit: Winning artworks will be intelligent and innovative to responses to ecology, and will excel in the field of contemporary art practice. b. The judge is given full responsibility for selecting the winning artworks based on his or her judgement. No correspondence or discussion will be undertaken on behalf of the artists with the judge or organiser concerning the selection of finalists or the winning artwork.

6 CONDITIONS OF ENTRY 3 of 3 c. Applicants are advised that judgements are made for the exhibition of 20 finalists on the basis of the submitted image(s) or DVDs and the artist statement. 7. Finalists: You will be notified by if your entry is successful or unsuccessful for the exhibition of 20 finalists in the week beginning Monday 27 June. If your artwork is selected: a. All finalists must undertake to make their work available for the Estuary Art Awards exhibitions at Malcolm Smith Gallery and Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple. b. All artworks must be display-ready and delivered to Malcolm Smith Gallery before Saturday 16 July, 4pm. i. Packaging: Finalists works must arrive in reusable packaging suitable for national transportation. The package or container in which the work is transported must be self-supporting. The outside of the packaging needs to clearly indicate the artist s name, contact details, return address and artwork title. ii. All freight costs to and from Malcolm Smith Gallery is the sole responsibility of the artist. 8. Rights: The applicant agrees to have his or her work reproduced for purposes of publicity and research. There will be no royalty or other payments made from these reproductions. 9. No Liability: Malcolm Smith Gallery will take all reasonable care whilst the artwork is installed. However, all entries are submitted at the finalists own risk. Malcolm Smith Gallery and associated exhibition venues accept no liability for any loss or damage and shall not be required to provide insurance cover for the entries.
