1 Artists Fieldhouse Studio Program The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation Artists Studio Residency Artist Opportunities - Vancouver Call for applications: Artists for Fieldhouse Studio Residencies in Parks Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, Vancouver, BC Deadline for Proposals: October 1, 2014 Description The Vancouver Park Board Fieldhouse Studio Program provides studio space to artists with community engaged/social practices at no charge. In exchange we ask for 350 hours per year of community-engaged arts practices and projects, working with a range of publics and communities. This community-engaged work should be centered out of the studio, surrounding parks and adjacent/partner community centres. The upcoming studio residency runs from Feb. 1, 2015 Dec. 31, Six fieldhouse studios are available Feb. 1, 2015* 1. Moberly Park Field House suite 2. Falaise Park Fieldhouse suite 3. Slocan Park Field House suite 4. Maclean Park Fieldhouse suite 5. Hadden Park Fieldhouse suite (not available until July 31, 2015) 6. McBride Fieldhouse suite This call is open to artists, artist collectives and arts organizations working in all disciplines: writers, composers, musicians, poets, choreographers, artists - visual and digital media, theatre, environmental, celebration multi-disciplinary, performing and those with a creative social practice. Please review current examples of artists working in fieldhouse studios: *This is a general call for studio spaces, if you are interested in a certain park area it can be noted in your application but there is no guarantee that you will be given that studio. Other studios spaces may come available during this term and will be offered to artists shortlisted from this call.
2 Objectives The Fieldhouse Studio Program provides studio space that places artists with community-engaged and social practices into neighbourhoods to create work in and with community. The program seeks to bring the everyday life of art into Vancouver neighbourhoods. It creates space to invite community, colleagues and curious visitors to share in intimate creative processes with artists through daily, shared arts experiences that are social, cooperative and collaborative. Community-engaged arts practices see artists collaborate with community members who may not see themselves as artists working together over an extended period of time as creators, producers, performers and active audiences. Contributing to the growing vibrancy of our neighbourhoods, this program seeks to inspire participation and relationship building where art becomes a catalyst for individual and community engagement. The program encourages artists and collectives to develop their creative practice by providing a stable work environment at no cost. In exchange, the artist/artist collective provides creative, participatory arts engagement with and for community. Where appropriate, this program looks to build strong relationships between artists in the program and adjacent community centres, making creative use of park and community centre spaces. Projects will be developed in collaboration with Park Board Arts programmers and community centre programmers. For three diverse examples of artist/community centre collaborations see below: Locomoto Collective at Aberthau: Anthony Shragg at Trout Lake CC: ttps://aretheretroutintroutlake.wordpress.com/ Cloudscape Comics at Kensington CC: Finally, the Fieldhouse Studio Program aims to grow the field of communityengaged arts/social practice by connecting artists who work in or are interested in developing this creative work. The Fieldhouse Studio Residency provides artists with the opportunity to: Pursue their current practices and experiment with new work free from the financial constraints of maintaining a studio space. Develop community-engaged arts/social practice projects in Vancouver by working for and with the neighborhoods/community centres that are near these studios in parks. Establish themselves in communities, to be productive both in the community and in their own practice
3 Connect with other artists who work in community-engaged/social arts practices through diverse, city-wide Park Board arts projects. Through these connections, we seek to grow this field of creative practices and develop a collegial, discursive network of peers. The Fieldhouse Studio Program is best suited to an artist or collective with an established, community-engaged/social practice that includes imaginative social encounters that engage, provoke and foster participation in the arts. Artists interested in food security, environmental initiatives and creative practices that encourage a relationship with nature are encouraged to apply. Demonstrated experience administering community-engaged arts projects/programs is an asset. Residency Specifics The Fieldhouse Studio Program is a partnership between Park Board and the Fieldhouse Studio Artists/Collectives with responsibilities as follows: Park Board: Provide studio space from Feb 1, 2015 Dec. 31, 2017 (with kitchen/washroom facilities) Provide major physical maintenance of the site e.g. utilities issues, broken windows, etc. Provide support from a Park Board Arts Programmer as a liaison with neighbouring Community Centres, to develop collaborative projects Provide support from a Park Board Arts Programmer as a liaison on any city-wide arts initiatives undertaken as part of Park Board programming (past examples: Vancouver Draw Down, Celebrate Stanley Park 125) Provide support from a Park Board Arts Programmer to assist with annual planning, review, and evaluation Provide opportunities to build an increasing network for artists with community-engaged/social practices in Vancouver Curate, coordinate and present State of the Practice, an exhibition with associated programming in 2017, to mark the culmination of the 3 year studio residency program Promote the artists, their work and the studio residency through the Vancouver Park Board/City of Vancouver and Community Centre networks Share joint copyright of project documentation with Vancouver Park Board and the City of Vancouver
