WBF has 42 units of affordable housing for WBF students (depending on availability). 18 units are for women with children. What is the WBF program environment like? WBF programs offer you a supportive, safe environment in which you can build skills and confidence to achieve your goals. Career development and job coaching services complement our skills training to support graduates so that they can secure and retain a high wage career. What s involved in the assessment process? You will need to pass a basic Math and English comprehension test to ensure you can calculate, measure and comprehend instructional materials. Pre-assessment for drugs, alcohol and fitness-to-work is provided through our assessment partner, SureHire Occupational Testing. Some programs may require TOWES type testing or other specialized testing. What wage can I expect to earn? Whether you go into an apprenticeship or nonapprenticeship such as Heavy Equipment Operator, these jobs pay well. Research wages & salaries at I m interested in a trades related program, what is apprenticeship? Apprenticeship is an earn while you learn system which typically takes 3-4 years. It includes on-the-job training under the direct supervision of a qualified journeyman plus the completion of technical training, depending on the trade. 3 What is Apprenticeship? Apprenticeship is a unique form of post secondary education. The apprenticeship process provides you with an earn while you learn pathway to a life-time career as a tradeswoman. Eighty percent of apprenticeship learning is on the job (while being paid by your employer), with 20 percent in technical training. So, where is the work? Industry forecasts that maintenance projects will increase significantly in the coming years. According to BuildForce Canada, from 2016 to 2023, moderate growth in new work across all engineering and resource markets in Alberta will drive requirements steadily higher. July 18-21, 2017 August 1-4, 2017 Tools for Training A two-day, skills training workshop designed to offer extra support when preparing to become a full-time student at WBF. Your Program Starts If you are uncertain about your career path or want to learn about the opportunities for women in construction, we suggest you attend an Information Session and Career Decision Making Workshop. For those who qualify, WBF offers student funding support which is program specific (see program pages for more information), such as: Industry sponsored programs (tuition paid) Government Grants (tuition and cost-of-living paid) Student Awards (tuition assistance) ATB Line of Credit (covers tuition, tools, cost-of-living, etc.) An essential component in class selection and funding support is completing your application with a thorough career investigation and success action plan. This is also a requirement for fee-payers. * WBF reserves the right to determine final applicant acceptance into all of our programs. 12 We Offer Training and Support for Indigenous Women Meet the WBF Indigenous Engagement Team! Through a variety of training and education options we ll get you working in construction! We support you through academic upgrading, training, application assistance, housing during training, and career development right in your own community. Corey Wells, IE Manager Corey hails from the Blackfeet Nation in Browning, MT. She has committed the last 22 years to providing counsel and guidance to Indigenous people in several different capacities. With WBF, Corey can share the possibilities that offer a better life that is driven by independence and financial freedom for Indigenous women and their families. Wendy Andrew, IE Advisor Wendy is a Metis women, half Irish/ Scottish and Ojibwe (Anishinaabe) from St. Rose Du Lac, MB and raised mostly in AB. She continues to learn about her culture from her loved ones and from the amazing Indigenous staff at WBF. Wendy loves travelling to each community to inspire women to participate in one of our programs and encourages all of our participants to succeed in their career goals. Arlene Twin, IE Advisor Arlene was born and raised in Edmonton, AB where she discovered her First Nations Identity at an early age. Her spirit name is Iskwew pimotew askihk (woman walking on earth). Arlene admits that she has had many struggles and has fallen off the red road many times throughout her life; Arlene continues to find her way back and to share her story through WBF so that other Indigenous women may learn from her hurts to make better choices for themselves and to find their woman spirit. In addition to our IE team that goes out into community, we also have an additional eight First Nation and Metis women on staff who provide support, encouragement and assistance to both applicants and students. 13 The Women Building Futures Suncor Energy Training Centre is the first of its kind in Canada. Classrooms, workshops and certified instructors provide women with the theory, skill training and workplace conditioning they need to be successful. Our workshops It s just been a total life change for me coming to WBF. I wish every person could come and experience what I have experienced here. A combination of fully furnished studio, one and two bedroom suites are available 18 are earmarked for single moms with up to four children*.
