1 Glacier County March 2012 March 1, 2012 I hope all of you are enjoying the milder weather that we have been experiencing this spring and are excelling in all of your activities. As spring moves forward I would encourage you to take some time and do a small amount of work on your 4-H projects. You can accomplish BIG things if you do a little bit at a time. It was fun to see all of the 4-H youth who chose to participate in the Project Day organized by Vicki Bradley. It was awesome to see representation from each of the clubs. I thought each of the workshops was fantastic and all of the youth there seemed to be having a great time. The thing I thought was the best is that the workshops were taught by people who have great experience in the skills presented. I think this expertise was because those who invited them looked outside our normal circles of contacts to bring in fresh ideas. Each of the presenters did an excellent job engaging the youth and leading the workshops so that everyone was encouraged to participate. The other item that I thought was excellent is that many of the youth tried a new skill that they were not familiar with. By doing this you expanded your skills and tried something new. We have an opportunity to gain some great presentation skills by reaching outside your comfort zone and trying Speech and Demonstration. For those of you who participated in the Poise and Presentation workshop by Kim Butterworth, could put you new skills to use and help others with what you learned to help them with their presentations. Some 4-H youth recently participated in a science fair and those projects would make excellent demonstrations. Along these lines, I had the opportunity to judge some of the science fair projects and observed that the 4-Hers did an excellent job of presenting their projects. I attribute some of that to the experience they received in 4-H of being comfortable in front of judges. There are two divisions in the Speech and Demonstration competition: Speech, which is standing in front of the audience and give a prepared speech. The Demonstration category includes demonstrations and illustrated talks. The majority of participants in the past have chosen to do illustrated talks where you have props and explain something you have researched or an experiment that you have done. So what can you do a presentation about? That is up to you. The variety of what has been done in the past has been: How to Clean a Horse s Feet to How to Fix a Flat Tire on a Bike. The great thing about it is, you can pick something that interests you and learn all you want about it. We have some great publications in the office that will assist you in the guidelines that the judges are looking for. If you have questions about how to get started or need help once you have pursued this interest please feel free to contact the Extension Office. We are looking forward to another great Speech and Demonstration Day. Damon Bunting Thought for the month: None of us can change our yesterdays, but all of us can change our tomorrows. Go directly to their website to submit your recipes: -In the upperish right hand corner there is a typensave button click on it -A login screen will open-click on the login button -For contributor put: your name -For group login put: fvl -For password put: y54rr When you fill in the recipe form make sure to put your club name in the second contributor line. -If you want to share anymore while you are there-go for it! Just hit the add recipe button after each addition. Have the youth in your program ever been out of state? Are they interested in understanding what life is like for youth in other communities and environments? Have you considered a 4-H Interstate Exchange as a way to increase their exposure to other life styles and America? Many 4-H clubs are interested in an "exchange" -- youth and leaders of a program visit you one year, and then usually your program will visit theirs the next. Sight-seeing, making new friends, and experiencing life in the new setting are the main agenda for an exchange. If an exchange might be appropriate for your program, browse the ads at If you want more information about how exchanges work, a few of the contact people who indicate they have participated in a number of exchanges over the years. Most of the contact people would enjoy sharing their experiences and answering your questions. And, if appropriate, submit your own ad! New ads are posted on an ongoing basis, and other ads removed as a program sets up an exchange, so check back if you don't find one that works. All exchange ads have been approved by the local 4-H authority, and the contact person is either an Extension 4-H Educator or a screened 4-H volunteer charged with coordinating the exchange for their county. 6 SPEECH AND DEMO DAY sponsored by Longview 4-H club will be April 26th at the Glacier Electric Conference Room, 5:30 pm. Registrations due April 13th. Preparing a 4-H presentation offers members fundamental life skills researching, planning, preparing, practicing, teaching and speaking. We often think of presentations as all about public speaking, but there is so much more to be learned by preparing a presentation. Learning how to express yourself with logic and order are also important components. The Glacier County 4-H Speech and Demonstration Day is scheduled for April 26th at Glacier Electric. We would love to have as many 4-H members as possible attend and present. If you are not able to prepare a presentation, at least attend, so you ll know more about the presentation event. For those who are preparing presentations, there are many resources available. We have booklets on demonstrations, illustrated talks and speeches available on request. We also have some nice booklets on posters and exhibits, as well as a list of several ideas. There are several great ideas on-line for 4-H demonstrations. If you want to know how to get started preparing a demonstration, go to to watch a nice tutorial. On YouTube, you can also find many 4-H demonstration/presentation videos posted from 4-Hers throughout the nation. You never know where you might get a great idea for a topic, method of presenting or posters. If you are doing a presentation for the county event, be sure to practice several times. Invite a friend or neighbor to watch you and give you tips. Video tape your presentation and watch for ways to make improvements. If you have questions about the 4-H presentation contest, please contact Kate at the Extension Office glacier@montana.edu

8 Opportunities Youth-Adult Partnerships in Public Action The Forum for Youth Investment partnered with the University of Wisconsin's Center for Nonprofits to publish Youth-Adult Partnerships in Public Action: Principles, Organizational Culture and Outcomes. This study focuses on how organizations translate principles of youth engagement into practice and build a culture of partnership, as well as the outcomes - for young people, institutions and communities - that can result when they do. The research focuses on two organizations, Austin Voices for Education and Youth and Oasis Community IMPACT in Nashville, TN, but the lessons can help any organization committed to meaningful youth engagement advance their efforts in concrete ways. 11 4-H Million Trees Project This is a great time to celebrate the success of the 4-H Million Trees Project this past year. Since the project started in Spring, 2007, over 41,000 youth have planted more than 340,000 trees. 4H MT continues to expand all over the world, from the U.S. to Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, and Africa. With 50,000 trees planted this year by 4HMTKENYA and another 250,000 planned there in 2012, we are well on our way to one million. But we still need help from around the globe! For both veteran and new clubs, please think about planning a 4HMT tree planting event in Earth Day (April 22), Arbor Day (April 27), and Global Youth Service Day (April 20-22) are excellent target dates when 4-Hers can make a BIG impact. Please forward this 4HMT Holiday Greeting to all other 4-H clubs and units in your county/state/country, and let all 4-Hers know they are invited to join 4HMT and get personally involved in the climate crisis. Kids can learn important life skills in this project, from writing articles and grant proposals, to giving presentations and speeches. We encourage all 4-Hers to start servicelearning projects in their passion areas. Please contact us with any questions about this project. Check out 4HMT on the web at or 'Like Us' on Facebook at TreesProject/ Thanks for your support of this project, because the Earth needs more people spreading the word about climate change and the importance of planting trees! Fiona Benjamin-Teen Leader 4-H Million Trees Project San Maeto County, CA 4-H SHOOTING SPORTS The Lake County 4-H Shooting Sports Leaders Council is planning a camp for 4-H Shooting Sports members this May. They are still finalizing the activities and schedules, but wanted to let everyone know the dates. May 11th-13th. The camp is for the entire family! The cost will be $50 per person with a maximum of $150 per family. This will include meals Friday night, all day Saturday and at least breakfast on Sunday and lodging. They plan on offering something in every discipline with everyone getting the chance to experience all the disciplines. There will also probably be an opportunity to experience Sporting Clays and/or Five Stand on Sunday for those members with their own shotgun equipment at a world class facility near Polson.
