The Wabash Valley Community Foundation is proud and excited to introduce a new online community engagement platform, Wabash Valley Gives (wabashvalleygives.org ), which allows people to learn about and assist with needs in our communities. The platform, which is free to nonprofit organizations needing assistance, is funded by several area private and corporate foundations and is managed by the Community Foundation. Wabash Valley Gives makes it easy to search a variety of categories for organizations that need funds or volunteers to provide or expand their services. Suppose a third grade teacher wants art supplies for her students, a local agency is providing clothing for the homeless, or an animal shelter is seeking donations for pet food. At Wabash Valley Gives, you can read about projects like these that need funding, then add your donation to those from other generous individuals. Whether you give $10 or $100, any size gift made through Wabash Valley Gives will impact the community. You can be assured that the platform is a safe, secure place to make your donation. In the past few weeks, the Community Foundation has held several informational sessions for area nonprofit agencies in Clay, Sullivan and Vigo counties, so they can learn how to seek assistance through Wabash Valley Gives. New funding requests are added regularly. Be sure to visit the site often. Remember, you can make a difference by volunteering or donating through Wabash Valley Gives. Add the Foundation to Your Gift List! As you plan your holiday giving, please consider a gift to the Wabash Valley Community Foundation. Your gift will enhance lives in your community far beyond the holidays. Many local agencies have designated endowment funds in the Foundation, created by dedicated supporters or by the agencies themselves. 2 Our Interns - Coming and Going Katelynn Moats, a senior at Indiana State University from Terre Haute and a major in elementary education with minor concentrations in Spanish, English as a new language, elementary reading, middle school mathematics, and civic leadership, has recently joined our team as our marketing and public relations intern. She will be working on projects relating to our 20th Anniversary Annual Report, as well as scholarship related items. As a native of the Wabash Valley, Katelynn is passionate about serving her community. She has had previous experience as an intern for the Indiana State University Foundation and looks forward to the experience that she will receive from our organization. Sara Brenton, a junior at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College from Carlisle and a major in nonprofit public relations, has been our special events intern for this past semester. Sara assisted us with the Community Expo and 20th Anniversary Celebration and has been working on plans for our second Annual Holiday Coffee. She had input in the promotion of the Wabash Valley Gives platform and participated in marketing meetings. Sara s final day with us is December 15, and she takes with her some very valuable experience directly related to her major area of interest. Good luck, Sara! Let the Scholarship Search Begin! Every year, hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship funds go unclaimed because students simply don t realize they are available. For example, if you re interested in art, did you know about the Oh, the Places You ll Go competitive scholarship based on the art of Dr. Seuss? Or, did you know there is a scholarship offered by the American Cancer Society that is exclusively for cancer survivors? Or, that many specialized organizations offer scholarships, for example the American Fire Sprinkler Association? Now you can go to the Wabash Valley Community Foundation website to search a database of hundreds of available scholarships that includes those offered through the Foundation as well as through many other local and national sources. The database can be searched by county, college, major, organization, and other criteria. Information provided about the scholarships will help you narrow your search, and most of the listings include links to the scholarships. Parents, be sure your high schoolers check out to begin their search for a scholarship! The rewards could be huge! This database was created by Kayleigh Olah during her internship. HELP US COMMUNICATE WITH YOU! To facilitate communication with our donors and others interested in the Foundation, we ve added a contact page to our website. There you can send comments, concerns and questions or request specific information on charitable giving, donor opportunities/gift planning, establishing a family legacy, setting up a scholarship fund, starting an endowment fund and upcoming Foundation events. 3 Community Expo Celebrates the Foundation s 20th Anniversary and Area Nonprofits The Wabash Valley Community Foundation celebrated its 20th anniversary by showcasing the services of more than 40 area nonprofit agencies at its Community Expo at Hulman Center on September 15th. Nearly 550 residents of Clay, Sullivan and Vigo counties joined in the celebration and voted for their favorite agency. The top vote recipients that evening shared in the $20,000 which was added to their agency endowments. 6 Foundation Wins Chamber s Vision A Level Above Award The Wabash Valley Community Foundation was honored to receive the Vision A Level Above award from the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce. Gene Crume, President of the Indiana State University Foundation, announced that the Wabash Valley Community Foundation was chosen to receive the award because if its significant progress toward enhancing quality of life issues, growth and economic development opportunities. The Community Foundation s work helps secure the promise of future community growth and sets Terre Haute apart from other communities.
