1 We are so excited to have you on board for the Mobile Bicentennial Summer Institute! Below is some general information to keep in mind as you prepare for this summer. Compensation and Travel 1. Everyone who participates will receive a $350 stipend. 2. You will receive travel reimbursement only if you live outside the limits of the city where your host site is located. 3. If you live within 100 miles of your host site, you will receive a mileage reimbursement, but you will not receive per diem payment. 4. If you have to stay in a hotel, know that the state pays maximum $75 per diem before you book. The per diem payment is intended to cover all food and hotel costs. 5. A blank W 9 and UAB Personal Services Form are included below. Both are required for payment. Please fill them out, sign them, and return them to Caroline Gibbons by fax ( ) or (caroline.gibbons@archives.alabama.gov) no later than June 1. During the workshop 1. You ll receive supplies for the week (notebooks, pencils, Post Its, highlighters, etc.), a copy of Ed Bridges Alabama: The Making of an American State, a copy of your reading in the content area book (Go South to Freedom by Frye Gaillard), materials from the Alabama Tourism Department, materials for the activities modeled at your site, and a folder and a bag to keep everything in. 2. The workshop will focus on social studies, but it will mix in ELA, math, science, and art as well. 3. Dress comfortably and wear walking shoes! You ll be moving around and doing activities throughout each day. 4. Bring a laptop or another wifi enabled device. 5. Lunch will be provided the first three days; you will dismiss before lunch on the last day. 6. Bicentennial staff, members of local or county bicentennial committees, members of the press, and legislators will visit during the week. After the workshop 1. Everyone who participates will receive credit in STI PD or equivalent. 2. Everyone will also receive a certificate of completion. 3. You should perform turn around training in your home district or at your school during the school year. 4. Let us know about any exciting bicentennial activities you do in your classroom or in your community. We re always looking for ways to promote schools and communities on our social media pages! 2 Susan Santoli Mobile: Change in Alabama s First City USA College of Education June This institute will guide teachers through the three centuries of history that belong to Mobile, Alabama s oldest city. Teachers will learn about the area s native people, visiting the University of South Alabama s Archaeology Museum to discover what we know about their lives and how we know it. Teachers will tour the History Museum of Mobile to explore the lives of the European colonists who took over the area of Mobile, how they lived in the early years of the city, and what the young city looked like. This institute will also cover Mobile s history of slavery, using oral history to show the institution s role in Alabama s past. Teachers who attend this workshop will receive classroom resources, access to primary sources, and the confidence to engage their students in Alabama s history.
