2 CHANGE OF COMMAND UPCOMING DATES DATE UNIT TIME LOCATION SEP 07 71EOD Group 1000 Founders Field ARMY CLAIMS STATUS The United States Army Claims Service Center for Personnel Claims Support is working diligently to adjudicate and process claims. The status "awaiting documents" does not necessarily mean the examiner is awaiting information from you as there are other agencies, such as DFAS, that must provide information to process claims. If any information is needed from you concerning your claim the assigned examiner will contact you. Currently DFAS is overwhelmed with the request for the required information to process claims and is working diligently to resolve the backlog. There have been over 1,000 claims from Fort Carson alone. COMMUNITY INFORMATION EXCHANGE The next Community Information Exchange will be held on Wednesday, September 19th at the Elkhorn, 9:00a.m. ED CENTER HOURS CHANGING Effective Aug. 6, the Fort Carson Education Center hours will change to the below. The education center is located in building Reception/Administration office, room 150: Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. --Army Education Counselors, room 150, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Walk-in only; no appointments. HOLIDAY GATE CLOSURES Gates 6 and 19 will be closed Sept. 3 in observance of Labor Day. They will reopen for normal business Sept. 4. Normal business hours for gates 6 and 19 are 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Visitor Control Center will remain open for normal business hours, 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sept. 3.
3 RECYCLING LOCATIONS The hours of operation for Fort Carson's full-service recycle location at the southeast corner of the Exchange on Sheridan Avenue are Monday-Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Exchange site accepts cardboard, mixed paper (white paper, newspaper, magazines, shredded paper, junk mail, etc.), aluminum, tin, plastic, glass, nonaccountable/expendable metals and ink and laser printer cartridges. Customers can also bring the following nontraditional items for recycling: --Electronics, including computers, cell phones, DVDs, TVs and other devices. There is a limit of one CRT TV or one flat screen TV accepted per family. (Only personal, non-government, electronics will be accepted.) --Porcelain (remove hardware and rubber gaskets) --Mattresses (not box springs) --Batteries There are also two primary recycle collection points for cardboard, mixed paper (white paper, newspaper, magazines, shredded paper, junk mail, etc.) aluminum, tin and plastic at the following locations: --Wolf Dining Facility parking lot --Specker Avenue and Long Street parking east of the Education Center Note that these recycle locations cannot be used to dispose of household trash. (The Exchange drop-off location does accept limited furniture and household hazardous waste.) 9 BOXING 101 Date: Aug , 9 a.m. - Nov , 9:30 a.m. The Directorate of Family & Morale, Welfare & Recreation (DFMWR) will host a comprehensive and hands-on class introducing participants to Boxing at Waller Physical Fitness Center. The commitment fee of $60 includes training with calisthenics, body weight exercises, bag work, running, jump rope, shadow boxing and more. 17 MOBILE FOOD PANTRY DISTRIBUTION NEW BICYCLE LANES DOWNTOWN CREATE CONNECTIVITY Another section of the "Link the Loop" project has been completed with the addition of buffered bike lanes on Cascade Avenue. Now, not only can cyclists get to the Downtown core through the city's extensive trail system, but they can also safely travel across the city center utilizing bike lanes on Weber, Pikes Peak and Cascade. The addition of signage along the urban trails also has made navigation easier. These enhancements directly reflect the goal of achieving "a walkable and bike-friendly center connected through safe and accessible multi-modal networks" as identified in the Experience Downtown Master Plan NO BARRIERS EVENT 17 Oct, 4:30 p.m.: NO BARRIERS will be here at Fort Carson. Guest speaker and founder, Erik Weihenmayer, who is blind, will share his personal stories of kayaking the grand canyon and hiking Mt. Everest. His organization is all about unleashing the potential of the human spirit.

Carmel Veterans Service Center partners with Coalition to Salute America s Heroes, Feed the Children, Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado and 4kidzsports to celebrate and thank our Military, Veterans & Families. Non-perishable food, hygiene items, and other goods will be distributed. This wonderful event is a give back to our Military Community in appreciation for their service from a grateful nation. If you are a member of the military, a veteran or family member, and would like to receive these goods, pre-register in person at Mt. MORE TO COME; ALL INFORMATION IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE. TRUNK-OR-TREAT Trunk-or-Treat will be held at Soldiers' Memorial Chapel Oct. 21 from 2-3:30 p.m. (or until the candy runs out). It's an opportunity for Families to meet and greet the chaplains of various faith communities and for children to trick-or-treat in a safe environment. The Religious Support Office is seeking volunteers and various directorates to host trunks. All volunteers are expected to bring a large amount of initial candy to pass out to the children and their Families. Back-up candy will be limited. 23 CAREER SKILLS PROGRAM The Fort Carson Career Skills Program (CSP) offers opportunities for eligible transitioning service members to gain the knowledge, skills and abilities needed for successful careers after they transition from active duty. To be eligible for any CSP, transitioning service members must be on active duty and within 180 days of transitioning from service as of the class start date, anticipate fully honorable or under honorable conditions discharge and have approval of the first field grade commander in their chain to participate. Each program also has additional eligibility criteria. Interested transitioning service members are encouraged to attend the appropriate information session as indicated below. They can also visit the Career Skills Program Office (building 6236, rooms ) Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
24 CLIMBING WALL MONTHLY CHALLENGE IHSFC Climbing Wall Monthly Challenge Iron Horse Sports and Fitness Center Climbing Wall Monthly Challenge All information is subject to change. Think you can hang? FAQ's Registration will be ongoing each month. Participants will have to climb a number of times per month in order to complete the challenge. Organizers have instituted an honor system for climbers to track and log their climbing distances. Open to DOD ID holders and their families. Open to first time climbers as well as those who are belay certified and looking for a climbing partner Certification is quick and easy to obtain. Participants will receive a shirt and free climbing gear rentals for the month. Prizes will be awarded to the top three participants. This class will also certify you in CPR and AED, so you can provide assistance when someone is faced with a cardiac or breathing emergency. Participants must attend both sessions to become certified. $75 per person for adults 16 years old and over; call for more information. Pineries Open Space Hike Saturday, September 22, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Preview New Open Space! Join El Paso County Parks and the Trails and Open Space Coalition for a guided preview hike through the Pineries Open Space. Although this park is not open to the public, you can join us for this special hike to learn the history and preview one of El Paso County s upcoming parks. 27 FLORISSANT FOSSIL BEDS NATIONAL MONUMENT AUGUST ACTIVITIES Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument is open year round. During August the Monument is open 8:00 AM 6:00 PM. Daily Interpretive Program Schedule: Interpretive Talk, Every Day 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, 30 minute interpretive presentation in the amphitheater Ranger Guided Walk, Every Day 11:00 AM, 1 mile guided hike on the Petrified Forest Trail Fossil Learning Lab, Every Day 1:30 PM 3:30 PM, learn how scientists discover and research fossils in the Yurt Hornbek Homestead, Every Day 11:00 AM 1:00 PM, take a tour of an 1878 homestead Weekly Programs: Yoga Hikes, Mondays, 9:00 AM 10:30 PM. Join a certified yoga instructor and a Park Ranger for a 1 hour and 15 minutes, 1 mile yoga hike. This will be a hike interspersed with standing yoga poses. This program is geared for beginner to intermediate yoga enthusiasts. Meet at the visitor center. Fossil Demonstration Excavation Site, Wednesdays, 10:00 AM 12:00 PM. Meet geologist, Dr. Bob Carnein at the demonstration excavation site and see the fossil beds in situ and learn about how excavations are conducted. This site is located off the Petrified Forest Loop approximately 1 mile round trip from the visitor center. Art in the Parks, Thursdays, 10:00 AM 12:00 PM. Everyone is an artist! Drop in and join volunteer artists and other visitors to sketch and/or water color paint scenes of Florissant Fossil Beds. Stay as long or as short as you would like anytime between 10 AM 12:00 PM. Ask at the visitor center desk for location. Limited art supplies and seating available. Interested artists may also bring their own supplies and portable chairs. Wildflower Walks, Saturdays, 9:00 AM 10:30 AM. Join Ranger Stacey for a weekly look at blooming flowers. This may be a 1 2 mile hike. Meet at the visitor center. 36 PWOC S FALL KICK OFF RED CROSS DENTAL TRAINING The American Red Cross Dental Assistant Training Program is coming up. Applications will be released beginning Aug. 1 at 8 a.m. in the Red Cross Office (room 1011) at Evans Army Community Hospital. Applications must be dropped off by 4 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Dental Activity headquarters, 1631 Wetzel Ave., building 815, room 113. The free program is open to military identification card holders (active duty, retired and Family members) who are American citizens and are at least 18 years old with a valid high school diploma or GED. The program will run full time, Monday-Friday from 6:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. from Jan. 2 to June 27. All classes must be attended; no partial credit will be given. For more information, call
37 SRP PHARMACY Did you know that the SRP Pharmacy at 6351 Wetzel Avenue, BLDG 1525 is FULL SERVICE open to all active duty and beneficiaries! They have little to no wait times. 1. FILL: Providers can place orders to fill scripts at the SRP site. Far less traffic than Evans Main Pharmacy. This doesn't need to be affiliated with an SRP encounter. I.e. Soldier seen at Ironhorse clinic - script filled at SRP site. 2. REFILL: All beneficiaries can have refills completed at the SRP site. See attached worksheet.
