4 The Ohio State University Student Chapter Brian McDaniel Vice Lauren West The Ohio State University chapter of IIE is ready for another exciting and involved year. Thanks to the Rob and Susan Savage Foundation, 16 lucky students were given the opportunity to attend the national conference in Cancun over the summer! Attendance at the sessions, networking opportunities, exposure to top professionals, and a lot of fun has set the tone for success within the group. The buckeye chapter began a program for students to share summer internship experiences at the start of general meetings. The group is excited to have Kroger give a presentation in October with several others such as General Mills and Unilever to follow. Last year, The Limited, Graeter s, and the Columbus Zoo were kind enough to give the group a tour of their operations. After a successful trip to the Purdue conference, Ohio State s chapter is looking forward to visiting their neighbors at the Ohio U. conference. This will be a good way for the current members to prepare for the 2012 regional conference in Columbus. The IIE crew will balance their studies by volunteering on campus clean up days and entering a team into various intramural sports throughout the school year, including the celebrated intramural softball team. Please visit our new website at It is under construction, but the webmaster is working hard to fully complete the information on the site. Awards and Recognition Congratulations to three members who competed in the arena competition this year for Ohio State: Jonathan Carmona, Jacob Miller, and Josephine Jing. Communications Officer, Bob Smyth serves as a National Liaison for the Construction Division of IIE. 7 University of Louisville Student Chapter Hannah Downs Treasurer Evan Adams The University of Louisville IIE Chapter recently participated in our student council s Society Picnic. This picnic serves as an informational fair for all incoming engineering students to learn about all the professional societies we offer here at Speed School. Also, we participated in our student council s Society Cup. This event is an Olympic style competition between all the professional societies here at Speed School. Some games at the event included tug-of-war, relays, and hot dog eating contests. Most notably, our school has become the first engineering school in the nation to achieve dual-level accreditation by EAC of ABET for both our baccalaureate and master of engineering programs. We are very proud of this achievement. In addition to our accreditation achievement, on June 7, Dr. Sunderesh Heragu of the Industrial Engineering department at the University of Louisville received the prestigious 2010 David F. Baker Research Award from the Institute of Industrial Engineers. This prestigious award recognizes "significant contributions to the advancement of the industrial engineering profession through outstanding research activity. The award was presented during the Annual IIE Conference and Expo held in Cancun, Mexico. 8 IIE Great Lakes Region Wayne State University Student Chapter Norman A. Dotson Vice Programs Kristen Jordan Vice Membership Mahbubul Khan In February of 2010, Wayne State s IIE chapter traveled to Purdue University for the Great Lakes Regional Conference with 25+ undergraduate and graduate students. The conference was not only used as a tool to enlighten and exposure our students to a professional conference experience, but also serve as tool to generate interest in not only the Department of Industrial Engineering, but in Wayne State's IIE organization. At the Great Lakes Regional Conference, Wayne State s IIE chapter was honored as the 2010 Great Lakes Region Conference Champs for our participation and performance at the conference. In May of 2010, Wayne State s IIE chapter sent 6 undergraduate students, as well as, 4 graduate students the Cancun, Mexico for the Annual IIE Conference. The experience was describe by students as once in a life time in which a new sense of pride for their career choice was gained WSU-IIE began the fall semester strong with two events; one of which was a cookout where we catered to the faculty, students, and staff of the newly named Industrial and Systems Engineering department. The second event to begin the semester was the Welcome Back Picnic in which we welcomed back our department, as well as, mix and mingle with the new faces in our department. WSU-IIE has made student recruitment its number one priority this year. Our plan of attack includes targeting undecided engineering students already in college, as well as, expanding our areas of recruitment outside of the traditional Northwestern Metro Detroit area. By venturing off to schools who typically don t receive much attention from colleges, we hope to 1 increase out admission numbers, 2 encourage students to explore industrial engineering as an option for study, and 3 give these once neglected schools the attention that all students deserve. Besides recruitment WSU-IIE wishes to continue to serve as a resource for our students. Last year was a noteworthy year for our department. Last semester the WSUs College of Engineering recognized and honored 143 students who made the College Dean s List. In order to receive this honor a student had to achieve a 3.50 grade point average; 12% of those 143 students were Industrial Engineering students. You might think 12% is not a large percent but since our enrollment is approximately 55 students, which is less than 2% of the total enrollment of the College of Engineering, we can proudly say 31% of our students were granted this distinction. We hope to add to our previous academic excellence and have set a goal to have 45% of our students make the Dean s List. WSU-IIE currently offers walk-in tutoring as well as designated tutoring times for particular classes 4 days a week. Besides assisting our students academically, WSU-IIE serves as an outlet for our students to not only to relax from the dayto-day stress from classes. We are currently installing a team mentality with our organization and department. Team Night, luncheons, and frequent trips are only a handful of social activities that we provide our students with. This year WSU-IIE plans to attend the Regional Conference at Ohio University and the Annual Conference in Reno, Nevada. 11 IIE Great Lakes Region Youngstown State University Student Chapter Melissa Airhart Vice Andrew Kolbus Youngstown State University s IIE Chapter is very excited about this year and the new events to come within it. We have started out the year with great participation from current members as well as doubled our chapter through recruitment. Recruitment was done through networking in classes, constructing a Facebook page, participating in All Majors Day, and presenting information about IIE at the intro to engineering classes. Our Chapter has monthly meetings where we plan upcoming events and review how past events went. We were honored to hear Roman Hlutkowsky speak about IE Opportunities Outside of Manufacturing at the All Ohio Day in Plain City. Our Chapter looks forward to participating in the Great Lakes Regional Conference again this year. We are planning numerous fundraising activities to help with funding the trip to Athens Ohio. The Chapter is arranging plant tours of local companies, social events, and our annual End of the Year Picnic to acknowledge graduating seniors and all of the hard work put into IIE. This past year our Chapter and Advisor accepted the Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award for Region Four and hope to continue in the rising success of our chapter.
