2 Dear IIE Great Lakes Members, Another year is coming close to an end! The Great Lakes Region members and leaders have had a busy year from attending an outstanding Regional Conference at Ohio State University, Purdue student Tim Duket, Purdue student presenting his technical paper at the National Technical Paper Competition in Orlando, Detroit Chapter Leaders, John Preston and Alexander Bohn being published in the IIE magazine. In addition, currently a group of 12 students from Wayne State University are competing in Ergonomics Design Competition. The accomplishment of our members can take up this whole newsletter!! However, it s not the running list of accomplishments that sets our region apart, it is the heart and passion that our volunteers dedicate to promoting the field of Industrial Engineering, developing the next industry leaders and most importantly creating a community that we all feel compelled to give back to. The National Conference in particular reinforces that despite the distance that separates all the IIE chapters, we all share the common vision of advancing our profession. I invite you all to read what all the student and professional chapters have been up to this past academic year and hope to see you in upcoming Regional Events! 1. ALL OHIO MEETING October 24th, 2012 page 4 for details 2. University of Michigan Regional Conference Feb 15 - Feb Please, all newsletter news and/or member recognition to newsletter editor Lindsey.R.Thomas@gmail.com. Sincerely, Vanda Ametlli

3 Regional Conference Update- OptiMizing a Better Tomorrow The University of Michigan will be hosting the IIE Great Lakes Regional Conference for Although this seems quite a bit away, preparations have already begun. A conference chair has been appointed along with an entire executive board to help with logistics and planning of the conference. The tentative date for the conference will be February 15-17, 2013, so be sure to mark your calendars. There will be several keynote speakers and some really interesting workshops. A lot of planning has been going into the schedule and the event to ensure a valuable and fun experience for everyone National Conference Review Greater Detroit Chapter Insights from Orlando Kerry Coran As a first-time attendee to the annual conference, the 2012 IIE National Conference in Orlando, FL. surpassed my expectations. IE s from across the globe converged to share our mutual love for all things process and systems related. I was extremely impressed by the number and quality of presentations, educational sessions, panel discussions, exhibitions, networking events, and facility tours. The keynote speakers highlighted the morning sessions while the afternoon networking events facilitated cross-industry connections. The National Conference was very comprehensive, offering a vast array of presentations on topics ranging from small food processing in Belgium to Lean opportunities in U.S. healthcare, from IT improvements in aviation to environmental sustainability, from panel discussions on advising the next generation of IEs to presentations on the extrinsic factors affecting generational gaps in the workforce. The conference was a truly rewarding experience, offering the opportunity to gain insight from one industry to leverage in your own field of work. For the third straight year, the Greater Detroit Chapter was one of a select few regional chapters to win the IIE Gold Award for chapter excellence in I was fortunate enough to accept the award on behalf of the GDC, but the win acknowledges the continued dedication and creativity of the entire GDC Board of Directors. Harbour Report Overview Greater Detroit Chapter, Fall 2011 The IIE Greater Detroit Chapter welcomed Oliver Wyman s Jennifer Wong and Chris Powers to Lawrence Technological University to present a general overview of their findings from within the 2011 Harbour Report. Jennifer and Chris shared their unique insight on the state of the automotive industry s manufacturing strengths and weaknesses. Their insight, gleaned from factory tours, conversations with automotive leadership, and thousands of analyses, generated interesting dialog with the IIE attendees. IIE members discussed the critical metrics that are held within the Harbour Report and their own perspectives on how to interpret the value of those metrics. The perspectives and trends that the IIE membership have witnessed in their own careers was reinforced with the Harbour Report findings. The IIE Greater Detroit Chapter is very grateful to Jennifer and Chris for sharing their time with us and we are thankful to Lawrence Tech for being such great hosts. Page 3

Ohio Chapters: Dayton Professional Chapter Columbus Professional Chapter Ohio State University Ohio University University of Dayton Wright State Youngstown University Oakland University professor funds Lean project at Crittenton Hospital Medical Center through Pawley Institute Fellowship Bob Van Til, professor in the Industrial Systems and Engineering department at Oakland University, has used his Pawley Institute Fellowship to fund a Lean project at Crittenton Hospital Medical Center (CHMC). Van Til was one of four OU professors awarded this fellowship, which were given in support of research that will advance knowledge and theories of Lean learning as well as to facilitate the work of university faculty to educate students about Lean principles. Kimberly Romstad, ISE major at OU, worked on this project through a summer internship position funded by the fellowship. Van Til hopes to acquire Lean case studies from this Crittenton project, as well as other projects, to use in his ISE courses at OU to help educate his students. The summer project was aimed at making Crittenton s storage system more efficient with a Lean culture in mind. Crittenton had a warehouse in Downtown Rochester used for storage, shipping and receiving. The goal was to design a new Lean storage facility located in the hospital to replace the existing warehouse. The project employed the use of Lean principles, such as inventory reduction and efficient product flow. Romstad worked 20 hours a week with team of professionals from CHMC and OU Professors Van Til and Sankar Sengupta. This hands-on internship gave her a practical application of Lean principles and tools. Romastad s hands-on experience included weeks of on-site work at Crittenton s existing warehouse and the distribution center, learning from the workers about their processes. This project was a great learning experience for me because I got to see what industrial and systems engineers do in the health care industry, Romstad said. I got to witness firsthand how to find an intelligent way to cut costs associated with everyday procedures, which, in the long run, really helps the hospital out. Through the fellowship, Romstad was given practical experience in her field of study. Crittenton also benefited from the project with over $580,000 in estimated savings for the first year and almost $78,000 for each following year. This project taught me about the opportunities available for industrial and systems engineers in health care, as well as learning a little about facilities design and supply chain management, Romstad said. It was a great experience; I would love to do it again. I would definitely consider working in health care after graduation. Article From: view_news.aspx?sid=12&nid=7964 Page 4

5 Chapter Updates Columbus Professional Chapter Website: & Secretary Holly Mellinger Vice & Program Director Marie Minnich The Columbus Chapter has been busy the past few months with the following events: All Ohio Event - We had 54 attendees from the following Ohio Professional and University IIE chapters: Professional Chapters Chapter #1 Chapter #2 Student Chapters Ohio State University University of Dayton Wright State University Youngstown State University Results from the 2011 IIE Awards commended to Ohio IIE members Innovations in Curriculum Competition First Place (TIE) Dr. Dale Masel, Ohio University Curriculum in Industrial and Systems Engineering using Professional Concentration Areas Dr. Scott Sink, The Ohio State University Integration of a Best in Class Lean Sigma Certification Option into the ISE Curriculum in the College of Engineering at Ohio State. Beat Michigan Schmooze Event- The senior chapter held their annual Beat Michigan Schmooze event with great results as usual. The two chapters met up at the new Woody's Tavern on campus and shared some pizza and drinks together. Overall, the student chapter was able to recruit over 40 new members! The senior chapter helped financially support this event which has proven to bolster the student chapter ranks every year. Chapter Happy Hours The Chapter has starting having bi-monthly happy hours. Every happy hour will be on the second Thursday of every other month at 5:30pm. The next one is scheduled for January 12 th Las Margaritas (Frantz Road location). Whether we are talking shop or just discussing events happening in Columbus, it will be a good chance to get to know one another. Chapter Recruitment Starting in the 2012 calendar year, we will be putting lots of emphasis on recruiting new members, whether they be 20 year professionals, or entry level and right out of college, we want them all! Regional Conference The Ohio State student IIE Chapter will be hosting the Regional Conference in February, and we have a handful of members already registered, and will be encouraging more! Greater Detroit Professional Chapter Website: Lanie Dixon president@iiedetroit.org The Greater Detroit Chapter had a great and busy second half of Our vice presidents, Alex Bohn and Vanda Ametlli attended the IIE annual conference in Reno, accepting the chapter s Gold Award. While at the conference, Alex presented his educational lecture that included a simulation optimization experience on program management that received rave reviews. The chapter met twice during the summer for some fun and charity work. We worked in the Cass Corridor of Detroit one Saturday morning in June helping to beautiful the city by plant flowers and cleaning up yards. We had our summer outing at a Tigers game and watched Detroit s star player Justin Verlander pitch. In the fall, Oliver Wyman graced us with presenting their general findings found within the Harbour Report. IIE members tied to the auto industry found the discussion invigorating. Next year, we will continue to be innovative with our programs by listening to our membership and planning events and activities that meet their needs. The Greater Detroit Chapter has been lucky to have the strong support from IIE, our membership and our board of directors. We are looking forward to 2012! Page 5

6 Ohio State University Student Chapter Website: Bob Smyth Executive Vice Elizabeth Schweizer The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual. Vince Lombardi The Ohio State IIE Chapter was fortunate enough to send 22 lucky students members to this year s annual conference in Reno, NV. Attendance at the sessions, networking opportunities, and exposure to top professionals set the tone for our chapter s stellar achievements this quarter. At home in Columbus, our chapter has continued to achieve unprecedented levels of success through the combined effort of our officers and student members. Whether it was our Operations Committee holding the most company info session per quarter in history, our Membership Committee signing up 52 new members this quarter, or our Communications Committee starting their new branding initiative, our chapter has been pushing the boundaries of what we thought possible. Our intramural flag football team even enjoyed a successful season that ended in a bitter loss during the league semi-finals. In addition to our oncampus activities our officers also had the unique opportunity to attend the All -Ohio Officer Induction ceremony where they were treated to Don Taylor s (current of IIE) keynote address. Our chapter is looking forward to the excitement and fresh perspective that our officer transition will bring during winter quarter as well as the 2012 Great Lakes Regional Conference that our Conference Planning Committee has worked tirelessly to bring to Ohio State on February th (mark your calendars!). 7 Ohio University Student Chapter Joseph Schilling Vice Brent Taylor from Ohio University Chapter, We are having an exciting year at Ohio University IIE. This year we have three new officers: Joe Schilling as, Ben Taylor as Secretary, and Patrick Gannon as Social Director. There has been a few events that have taken place this quarter. Ms. Lucchino who is currently assistant for administration to the Secretary of the Navy, and Ohio University alumnus, came and spoke about her career as an IE to the chapter. We would like to thank the Columbus Chapter for helping to arrange a tour to the McGraw Hill facility in Blacklick Ohio. Bruce Wernke, who is the Operation project Manager, directed our chapter on an exciting and highly informational tour of McGraw Hill. Thank you again for everyone involved in this event. Our upcoming winter events include a trip to two facilities in Kentucky: the Toyota Manufacturing facility, and the Maker s Mark distillery. We are also planning to work concessions at the Bobcat basketball games for a fundraiser opportunity. The chapter is looking forward to traveling to the Regional Conference held at Ohio State Regional Conference Kenworth Tour ISE Spring Banquet! During the banquet we honor our graduating seniors, outstanding students, research and have presentations by IE Alum. Page 7

8 Oakland University Student Chapter Website: Meredith Deneweth Vice Jackie Sinishtaj Oakland University IIE is back on the map! We have been very active so far this year, despite the size of our group. We were very proud to hear that our chapter had received a Bronze IIE award for the 2010/2011 school year! Since then, we have been striving to obtain Silver or Gold for the 2011/2012 year! We intend on reinventing IIE at OU, as well as getting the Industrial and Systems Engineering program better recognized to prospective students of the university. Kimmy Romstad, secretary of our chapter, is working with Professor Van Til as a recruiter for OU s ISE department. Over the summer, a couple of our members attended the demonstration of the DaVinci robot at Crittenton Hospital in Rochester. It was a very interesting experience, and it was great to have the opportunity to enter a hospital operating room and learn about this highly innovative technology. It was also nice to meet local IIE members from other chapters. We look forward to any and all upcoming Detroit IIE events! As a fundraiser in October, our chapter recently organized an OU Engineering T-shirt and hoodie sale, in which we sold almost 100 shirts. Oakland University hasn t had engineering apparel for sale in over four years, and we decided we d be the organization to help it make a comeback. The sale was a hit, and many engineering students have since been inquiring as to when we re going to do it again so that they can buy more for their friends and family. In October, we held an IIE open house for all university students and faculty to come see what we re planning for the rest of the year. We had a good turn-out, and it transitioned into an information session about Industrial Engineering as a profession for a couple undecided freshmen and sophomores. We used the Disneyworld video from the IIE National website to demonstrate how versatile ISE is as a field. From this event, we obtained two new members, Bill Edwards and Waseem Kazi. We look forward to their participation in our chapter! On December 13th our chapter president, Ph. D. student Meredith Deneweth, presented a paper at the Winter Simulation Conference in Phoenix, A r i z o n a. S h e w o r k e d with OU professors Dr. Sengupta and Dr. Van Til to model and simulate hospital emergency care services. During the conference Meredith volunteered with other conference attendees at the IIE booth to share the benefits of IIE membership. Meredith plans to present her next research project at the Annual IIE Conference in May. A couple events that we re looking to put on next semester include a joint event with another local university chapter, most likely Wayne State University. We would like to collaborate with a local chapter so that we can learn about what events have worked at their school as well as networking with local ISE students since our program relatively small at OU. In the near future, we are looking into arranging a plant tour at Chrysler s Sterling Heights Assembly Plant. Finally, three of our members have definite plans for attending the Annual IIE Conference in May. We are currently looking into methods for fundraising OU IIE members (from left) Kimmy Romstad, Michelle Tan, and Jackie Sinishtaj with Bronze award for the school year Chapter president, Meredith Deneweth at the Winter Simulation conference in Phoenix, Arizona Page 8

Wayne State University Student Chapter Norman Dotson ndotson@wayne.edu Vice Programs Aishwarya Sankar dy9042@wayne.edu Vice Membership Pritchett Channing ax0788@wayne.edu The fall 2011 semester was a busy one for Wayne State University s IIE chapter. The semester was kicked off with the Industrial & Systems Engineering Welcome Back picnic. IE students from all standings, faculty, and staff were invited to Meet the Department and usher in the new school year with food, beverages, games, and prizes. The WSU chapter participated in Focus Hope s 36th annual walk to support overcoming racism, injustice and poverty on October 10, The walk brought together hundreds of people from various backgrounds from the Detroit metro area for a great cause. With an increased focus in assisting the department with its student recruitment and retention efforts, the WSU chapter hosted 27 students from Chandler Park Academy (Michigan) in mid -October. The event entitled, Industrial Engineering Experiences provided the students with an introduction to Industrial Engineering, and experiences from a panel consisting of students and IEs working in the field. The event closed with a team competition and the awarding of a $1000 scholarship to attend WSU for one lucky student. The WSU chapter, in collaboration with other engineering student organizations, co-hosted the Engineering Halloween Party, Holiday Potluck, and hosted the ISE department 3rd Annual Graduate-Alumni Recognition Ceremony. For 2012, WSU chapter plans to continue to gain on its momentum. In January, we will host a follow up event to Industrial Engineering Experiences. For Engineers week, the WSU chapter will host the annual International Potluck. This year will include live entertainment, presentations from engineering student organizations, and of course food prepared by the engineering student organizations on campus. The WSU chapter plans to send 25+ students to the IIE Regional Conference hosted by OSU.
