2 2010 Team UAH w/ Mascot in San Luis Obispo Team UAH traveled to San Luis Obispo on June to compete in the ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition (NCCC), making it the sixteenth time that Team UAH has represented their university and the Southeast Conference. Even though the national championship was elusive this year, Team UAH's 6th place overall finish is the highest UAH placement at Nationals since "ConQuest" placed 3rd in The host school, Cal-Poly- San Luis Obispo (SLO) is the sixth university to win a national title and the first to both host it and win NCCC Champion, Nevada-Reno Wolf Pack placed 2nd while Canadian Champion Ecole de technologie superieure (ETS) finished third followed by Michigan Tech and five time national champion University of Wisconsin-Madison Badgers. Next year's NCCC competition will be held in Evansville, Indiana. The major award categories and the winners are listed below.

3 The editors of The Databyte felt the thoughts shared on the blog of Dr.John A. Gilbert, longtime ASCE student chapter faculty advisor and MAE professor best summed up this year's competition effort for Team UAH and their canoe "Super Charger"... "...Finally, although my students in Team UAH would have liked to have finished better than sixth at nationals, we were just glad to have been there. I believe that we were successful in "charging on" toward victory... both as a team and as a university that suffered irreparable UAH "Super Charger" damage in our ranks due to the campus shootings. My hat goes off to our athletic department for allowing us to borrow our beloved :"Charger Blue" outfit, to campus security for lending us the scared UAH flag that flies over campus daily, to our administration and sponsors for getting us to the competition, and to the countless number of students and supporters who contributed and backed the effort. Team UAH sailed though rough seas on our campus and in California on Lopez Lake which limited the time available to finish our product and contorted our dynamically tuned hull to the point where our technology actually worked against us during the races. It was a vivid demonstration of how even the best laid plans can go astray. But I was very proud of my team for hanging in there and giving it all they could. As mentioned [in his national pick selection discussion], "This team [UAH] has outstanding student leadership and they stick together like glue. They will be hard to beat." As far as I'm concerned, we didn't win our sixth national championship but we did come home winners... because we did the best

4 that we could under the conditions that we faced. In a very real sense, this year's competition helped bring my feelings regarding our campus tragedy to closure. I knew most of the victims well and have come to the conclusion that our sixth place finish was exactly right. Something to remember my six fallen colleagues by... while encouraging Team UAH to "Charge On" and make the improvements required to do even better in years to come." 6 COE Happenings Middle School Students Experience ---TEAM --- this summer For the second straight summer, Middle School students are walking the floors of Tech Hall as they participate in TEAM. TEAM stands for "Transportation Engineering Advancement and Mentoring", and is a program funded by the University Transportation Center of Alabama (UTCA). The goal of TEAM is to encourage under-represented groups to enter transportation engineering. Dr. Kate Leonard (CEE) manages the program with the assistance of Drs. Dawn Bardot (MAE), Gillian Nichols (ISEEM) and Edgar Blevins (Southern Louisiana). Other COE professors assisting during hands-on experiments include Drs. Samuel Gholston (ISEEM), and Mike Anderson

7 (CEE) pictured below assisting students during bridge design. Middle school participants are selected based on teacher recomendations and interest. The students perform many hands-on experiments related to transportation, such as a robotic car design, water propelled rockets, alternative energy and passenger safety.

9 MAE Undergraduate Student Adam Martin provides guidance to Engineering Camp students. (above) Local area 11th & 12th Grade Students reported to Tech Hall this week to participate in the 5th Annual Engineering Summer Camp. Databytes caught up with the students Tuesday as they began the process of building bridges with popsicle sticks guided by their individual designs completed earlier in the computer lab. Other hands-on educational activities planned for the week included chemical reactions, rocket launch, robotics, circuits, lean mfg and optics. Dr. Samuel Ghoston (ISEE) guided the week's activities with assistance from COE faculty & students. Campus Happenings Fall 2010 Students & Parents Attending Orientation

10 Dr. Rhonda Gaede (ECE) leading the Orientation Q&A session for parents of FY 2010 undergraduate students this week Have you noticed the Orientation directional signs up and around campus the last few weeks? The fall 2010 undergraduate students and their parents are arriving on campus to attend one of several orientation sessions scheduled this summer. The primary location being utilized for the orientation sessions is the UC building. Please "Take Charge" by providing directions to UC or other buildings on campus if you notice campus guests looking a little lost or confused.
