1 The LDOE UUBEETAANI May 2010 LMS Represented at State Geographic Bee By Natalie Martinez Top geography students from New Mexico met in Albuquerque on April 9, 2010 to compete for a trip to the National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C. Laguna Middle School student, Tyrone Thomas, was included among those scholars. Tyrone is a seventh grader at LMS; he won the school Bee in January and qualified to compete in the state Bee. After his success at the LMS Bee, Tyrone was required to complete a written test to qualify for the New Mexico Bee. He received an invitation from the National Geographic Bee Headquarters in March. The State Bee was held at the Convention Center where 89 contestants, grades 4 through 8, were divided into small groups to compete in the preliminary round. There were 15 students in Tyrone s group who vied for selection into final round competition. These students were tested on their knowledge of United States political and physical geography, world economies, world physical geography, and world current events; only the top two scorers proceeded to the final round. Tyrone correctly answered questions about world geography relating to the poverty rate in Malawi and bodies of water near Oaxaca; he also knew answers to US geography questions such as effects of brown algae in U.S. kelp forests, differentiation of pan handle states, and identification of mountain ranges. He answered enough questions to end with a tie for third place in the preliminary round. The two finalists from Tyrone s preliminary round group took first and third place in the championship rounds, and the State Bee overall. Students competing in the State Bee came from public, private, and home based elementary and middle schools across the state. Of the 34 New Mexico towns and cities represented, Laguna was the only Tribal school in the competition. Laguna Middle School has not competed in the National Geographic Bee since 1997, so it was a great first time experience for all students and many faculty involved in this endeavor. We hope to continue our participation in this competition annually.

2 Thanks are due to all the people who helped our school during the National Geographic Bee: LMS teachers and students who participated in the school preliminary rounds; Ms. Gurule and her Art class for the signs, as well as the students and teachers who joined the pep rally for Tyrone before his State competition; LMS Bee judges from ELEV8 and moderator from LEF; Principal Jiron for his support; and Laguna Education Foundation for graciously sponsoring the LMS School Level Bee and helping with travel expenses during the State Bee. Also thanks to Mrs. Florence Reed for sponsoring lunch during the State Bee.

3 LMS Students Visit Washington, D.C. and New York City for Spring Break The Spring Break trip for LMS students started in Lee Ann Cheromiah organizes this trip for the 8 th grade students. For the past five years the Spring Break trip has included New York City. This trip is not affiliated with the Laguna Department of Education or Laguna Middle School. It began as an independent trip for 8 th grade students. Students have to raise their own funds to pay for this trip. This is an exciting trip and may be a once in a life time trip for some of the students. Students travel to Washington, D.C., where they spend two and a half days. There they get to see the Smithsonian, the White House, Lincoln Monument, Vietnam and Korean memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery. With the help of Senator Udall s office, students have been able to tour the Capitol Building, seeing the Senate and House chambers, actually being where our legislators make laws and pass bills. Students also travel to Mount Vernon, President George Washington s plantation. On day three the students travel to New York City! There, they experience New York s fast paced life. Students tour the Empire State Building, Central Park, 5 th Avenue, walk and shop in Times Square, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, go to a Broadway play (this year they saw the play, Memphis ) and see the Statue of Liberty before heading home. This year, while in Washington, D.C., our students met up with Dr. Fairbanks outside the Capitol Building. There we took a group photo. It was exciting, because we got to see someone from HOME!!! Submitted by LeeAnn Cheromiah
