4 SPRING, 2017 FOUR PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Enthusiasm! The real secret to success is enthusiasm (-Walter Chrysler). The feeling reflected in the UCLA team, our coaches, parents, and alumni. It translates directly into action. Within the last two years, three families (the Berketts, Oftedals, and Newmans) stepped forward to commit at the $100, level. Through leadership, they set the new high-water mark and challenged us. Our fundraising broke all earlier records as we close on $500, in just this one last year, with our fiscal year ending June 30 th. New coaching staff, headed by Coach Simon Hoadley, drove our UCLA Crews hard to win multiple regattas (based on aggregate point scores) and dual meets the Henry Nicholas Cup, WIRA and the Pac-12 Championships Club Trophy. What this meant to you - the spectator whether on the water or from afar, is that every boat was competitive and in the center of the push. Every crew and coxswain found themselves in the Grand s within their respective categories. Parents and Alumni watched teams bring home shirts off the backs of opponents and trophies. Our athletes are on the hunt. These feelings are reflected on the faces of the student-athletes (cocurricular top students). UCLA team tents were found at every major competition this season San Diego Crew Classic, WIRA, and the Pac-12 Championships with parents graciously providing the full spread of food and drinks. Alumni hosted dinners or housed teams. One alum gave a dinner for the team in a penthouse overlooking the California State Capital, just four blocks away. Your UCLA Crew program is focused, organized, determined, every penny counted, its house is in order, with significant equipment (new boats) that will be purchased in the coming months. UCLA Crew will be in the ACRA Championships on the East Coast. Plans are being laid for a new boathouse and aquatic facility at our current location in Marina del Rey. The FOUR banquet in February generated roughly $40,000 in one night alone, with another $15,000 from the team s Spark fundraising campaign. Your generous auction gifts, time, and contributions were deeply appreciated, amidst the reunions of the 1957, 1967, and 1977 crews. Over the past year, the FOUR Board reworked its Articles & Bylaws and created more seats, with open meetings held each and every month even multiple meetings - as needed. The dedication, hard work, and the sometimes-passionate discussion from the volunteer Board Members is inspiring. You are always welcome to attend these meetings. Just send an or call the private number below and ask for the dial-in information and a copy of the Board s agenda. During the one hour call you will witness and be entertained by a group of very dedicated volunteers, with our UCLA representatives, and Coach Simon, all of whom "tend to their knitting" as they punch through each agenda item. It is a pleasure to serve among such people. As many of you already know, your questions, suggestions, and concerns are always welcomed and appreciated. We are challenging the pack, and once we become the very best, we will look within ourselves to become better. The secret of genius is to carry the spirit of the child into old age, which means never losing your enthusiasm (-Aldous Huxley). In this final sense, you kept the ladder down for the young student-athletes to follow. Established in 1933, it s a good time to be a member of the UCLA Crew. My best to each of you and your families - William W. Bill Palmer, volunteer president of FOUR (mobile no. (916) ; wpalmer@palmercorp.com). 4

7 MAN ON THE INSIDE: PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP FROM JUNIOR ZACHARY ALTER Dear Parents and Alumni, SPRING, 2017 With our first team appearance at the Pac 12 Championships since 2012, UCLA Men's Rowing came home with the Club Team Points Trophy! The day started off with Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 heats to determine which of the club teams would move on to the grand finals against OSU, Stanford, Cal and Washington. Strategically placing second in both heats to qualify for the finals with energy left, both First and Second Varsity 8's moved on. The next event was the Varsity 4 where UCLA held even with OSU for the first 500 meters and gradually fell back to place fourth in their final. The Novice 8 also came in fourth beating Colorado and Washington State by considerable margins but back on the field of Washington, Cal and OSU. Seeded 7th in the latest ACRA polls this group of first year rowers seeks to bring home some medals at nationals in one week. The Third Varsity 8 rowed their last race of the season to place 6th in the grand final. Starting up on all club teams but just back from the division one teams the Second Varsity 8 finished 5th beating out all club teams. The final race of the day led UCLA to becoming club champions. The Varsity 8 rowed a solid race being edged out by Oregon in the last 500 and placing 6th overall. I would like to thank Bruce and Judy Kerns as well as Jeff and Trina Horner for providing housing and dinner Saturday evening. It is with the help of such kind and generous parents and alumni that our attendance and success at regattas is possible. I would also like to thank all of the parents and alumni who made donations for the Pac 12 weekend. It has been recognized and appreciated by the whole team that our parent and alumni community show so much support for what we do. Entering the final week before ACRA, the club national championship regatta, the team is focused, eager and determined for what is in store. With entries in the First and Second Varsity 8's along with the Novice 8 UCLA Men's Rowing is sending its biggest squad ever to ACRA. Curious how the team did at the American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA) National Championship Regatta in Gainesville, Georgia over Memorial Day Weekend? Find results on the V8, 2V8 and Novice 8 races at row2k.com under the Results tab. 7
8 Friends of UCLA Men s Rowing c/o Kyle Knoll 8101 Fordham Road Los Angeles, CA ABOUT FOUR AND YOUR CONTRIBUTION The Friends of UCLA Men's Rowing (FOUR) provides financial support and assistance to the UCLA Men's Crew. The Men's Crew is wholly selffinanced by oarsmen, alumni, and friends. For the program to continue to grow and prosper, it is vital that new sources of revenue be found. Future Funding: One of the most important functions of FOUR is building an endowment. A gift to the Endowment will provide for the program in perpetuity. How You Can Donate: Online: You can give online by clicking the link GIVE NOW in the upper right corner of our website at Current Funding: Today each UCLA oarsman must pay roughly $2000 per year to row. This figure covers approximately half of the per-oarsman cost of equipment, travel, salaries, uniforms, etc. The balance of the annual operating budget must be made up with contributions from donors. To ensure the young men who want to row have the same rich rowing experience we had, you can help by sponsoring an oarsman for a year through a donation of $1500. By Check/Mail: All checks should be made payable to "UCLA Foundation," please indicate on the memo portion of your check either: Men s Crew Current Expenditure Account Men s Crew Endowment Mail to: Friends of UCLA Men's Rowing c/o Kevin Still 5 Ivy Place Hartsdale, NY You will be mailed a receipt from The UCLA Foundation specifying the amount and specific fund designated. Please verify that your donation was directed according to your wishes. FOUR is a non-profit organization as defined in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (Tax Identification No ) and is affiliated with the UCLA Alumni Association. Operational and endowment funds raised by FOUR become part of the UCLA Foundation. Your donations are tax deductible.
