3 Keynote Speaker Dr. Audrey Yamagata-Noji Vice President, Student Services Mount San Antonio College Audrey Yamagata-Noji is an educator, trainer, and school board member. For the past 33 years, Audrey has worked in California Community Colleges as a faculty member and an administrator. She presently serves as the Vice President, Student Services for Mt. San Antonio College. Audrey is also a trainer and facilitator for Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics (LEAP) and co-coordinates the Leadership Development Program in Higher Education (LDPHE). She is a founding board member of Asian and Pacific Americans in Higher Education (APAHE). Additionally, Audrey has been elected to the school board for the Santa Ana Unified School District (6th largest district in California) for 23 years. She was recently appointed as the Director-at-Large representing Asian and Pacific Islander Americans to the California School Boards Association. Panelists will include: how they chose their program, how difficult it is, what they find most rewarding and what they wish they had known when they first entered graduate school. Sculpting Race Dr. John Hoffman, California State University, Fullerton Dr. Joy Hoffman, Whittier College Ursa Minor [BSC] In this interactive session, the presenters will develop a human sculpture in order to teach the dynamics of Janet Helms Person of Color and White racial identity development models. This activity is highly effective when working with traditional age college students. Participants will take part in the sculpting exercise and then receive materials necessary to use the activity on their own campuses. A panel of student affairs professionals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or allies will share their experiences as they move up the student affairs ladder. Using Strengths to Develop the Next Generation of Student Affairs Professionals Ms. Vicki Allen, California State University, Northridge [Bookstore] This presentation will involve an introduction of Strengths Quest and the use of this tool in the development of new professionals including graduate students and entry-level professionals. It will include a brief opportunity for participants to assess their own strengths and discuss how using positive psychology and strengths can transform their work experience and how they interact with students. How to Get Hired in a Crumby Job Market [Bookstore] Ms. Alisia Kirkwood Dr. Kandy Mink Salas, California State University, Fullerton While Student Affairs is an excellent career choice for the long term, the current economic conditions make job searching a challenge. This session will share practical suggestions on being successful in this difficult job market, as well as how transferable skills may open up other unique opportunities. Professionals with Disabilities Presenterrs: Dr. Cathy Schmitt Whitaker, Cal Poly Pomona Ms. Patricia Duran, Cal Poly Pomona Ms. Catherine M. McLeod, California State University, Northridge England Evans [BSC] Student Affairs has historically been an area of strong support for students with disabilities. What is it like to be a professional with a disability working in the field? What issues and obstacles do people experience? What support systems are present? The changing nature of higher education in our society, the changes in the types of students seeking a college education, the development of diverse institutions of higher educations and theoretical evolution have all had an impact on student affairs and the work of its professionals across the range of student service areas. As a result of this march through history, participants will gain a complex understanding of contemporary student affairs practice. Changing Realities & Resources for AB540 Students Orion [BSC] Ms. Janette Hyder, California State University, Fullerton Ms. Elizabeth Munoz, California State University, Fullerton How can college and university campuses create a more inclusive environment for the increasing number of undocumented students they are serving? This workshop will first discuss the unique needs and challenges that undocumented students face as they embark in their higher education experience, as well as the current California law affecting their access to higher education. Additionally, presenters will provide guidance on how to develop a strong support system on any campus in order to create a safe and welcoming environment for undocumented students. Balancing Life as a Graduate Student and Wellness: Tips and Tools Ms. Jennifer Miller, University of California, Riverside Ms. Oronne Wami, University of California, Riverside Andromeda [BSC] As a graduate student, you are among the nation s best and brightest. We also want you to be the healthiest. Staying healthyinside and out-helps you to excel at school, work and home. This presentation will discuss tools for graduate students to support their health and well-being. We will also highlight UC Riverside s Graduate Student Wellness Initiatives program, outreach activities and services. Professional Roundtable [Contemporary Issues] Ursa Major [BSC] Moderators: Dr. Cecilia Santiago, University of Southern California Dr. Rochelle Woods, California State University, Fullerton This session is for early career and mid-career professionals who are interested in exchanging ideas about issues impacting the student affairs profession. Legal and Ethical Issues in Student Affairs Ms. Sandy Rhoten, California State University, Fullerton England Evans [BSC] Student Affairs professionals grapple with ethical decisions in their role on campus as they interact with students, faculty, administrators and parents. To respond to these challenges, student affairs professionals must have a clear understanding of ethical principles and the role of ethics in practice. Our professional organizations provide guidance to members through standards of practice and codes of ethics. We are also expected to understand legal implications and practices which guide our practice as well. In this session the facilitator will provide a brief overview of current ethical and legal issues for our profession and lead a group discussion around relevant case studies. This session will cover a brief overview of social media outlets as well as sharing best practices, facilitate a discussion between participants, and provide an opportunity for questions to be answered. By the end of this session, it is our hope that student affairs professionals will be transformed in their thinking about the ways we connect to one another, both as colleagues and as a community of learners. However, finding concrete and measurable proof of this can sometimes be difficult. This presentation highlights the success of one student affairs team and their commitment to making proof of learning outcomes readily available. Presenters retrace and discuss the steps they followed to transform the way division programs are planned and implemented and how learning outcomes can be easily assessed, documented, and shared. The panel addresses their experiences in professional organizations and discusses the advantages of building connections with colleagues in the field. Panelists will share their experiences in NASPA (National Association of Student Personnel Administrators), ACPA (American College Personnel Association), ACA (American Counseling Association), APSA (Association of Professionals in Student Affairs) and AGSAP (Association of Graduate Student Affairs Professionals). Choosing a specialization within the profession can sometimes be challenging. This workshop will help participants learn more about the scope of our profession, the challenges and rewards of a specialization in areas such as Judicial Affairs; Greek Life; Cultural Centers; or Disability Services, and the way to maximize the skills you learn in one area to transfer to another.
