3 NATIVE OKLAHOMA DECEMBER ON OUR COVER: TRACI RABBIT Traci Rabbit, daughter of Cherokee National Treasure and internationally known artist Bill Rabbit, was born at the Claremore Indian Hospital and grew up in the area around Pryor, Oklahoma. She was always close to her father and her fondest childhood (and adult) memories are of going to art shows with her dad. I never considered the possibility of becoming an artist, because in my mind he (Bill) was the greatest and I knew I couldn t compare to him in that arena, she says. However, she always enjoyed art and started winning awards with her work in elementary school. Still not thinking of an art career, upon graduation, she attended Northeastern State University in Tahlequah to study business administration. She wanted to work for her tribe or perhaps the Bureau of Indian Affairs. That wasn t to be. My dad started selling my paintings to galleries when I was in high school and in college. Upon graduation, I started showing with my dad, she says. Today, she is an established artist in her own right and produces not only original artwork, but a line of printed gift items based on her work such as mugs, art tiles, ornaments, cell phone cases and scarves. Send your photo and a bio of 250 words or less to lisa@nativeoklahoma.us ON OUR COVER: STANDS ALONE This painting represents a version of myself, standing alone without my dad (artist Bill Rabbit). I didn t paint for a year and a half after Dad passed. I just continued to go through the motions of life. I painted Stands Alone about a year and a half after I began painting again. It was cathartic for me. After all those years trying to differentiate my work from Dad s, I started reaching in and using those tools and techniques he taught me. Now when I paint, there are remnants of Dad s work in mine. You never get over the sorrow, you just learn to walk with it. This is me, me on my own, strong and determined. 31 NATIVE OKLAHOMA DECEMBER FEATURED READING - Betrayal at the Buffalo Ranch BY Sara Sue Hoklotubbey When Sadie Walela learns that her new neighbor in Cherokee Country, Angus Clyborn s Buffalo Ranch, offers rich customers a chance to kill buffalo for fun, she is horrified. No good can surely come from this. It doesn t, and murder soon follows. Even though Deputy Sheriff Lance Smith, Sadie s love interest, suspects a link to the Buffalo Ranch, he can find little evidence to make an arrest. And when a rare white buffalo calf is born on the ranch and immediately disappears, Sadie s instincts tell her something is wrong and she sets out to prove it. Her suspicions and fears of more violence escalate when a former schoolmate returns to Oklahoma to visit her ailing father and finds employment at the ranch. Will she be the next victim? Cherokee history and stories told through Cherokee eyes, from the Cherokee point of view - available at Amazon.com or by order from your local bookstore. Drawn deeper and deeper into danger, Sadie uncovers an unparalleled web of greed and corruption. It will take all of her investigative skill to set things straight assuming she and her wolfdog can stay alive long enough to succeed. Sara Sue Hoklotubbe, a Cherokee tribal citizen, is the author of the award-winning Sadie Walela Mystery series. Book will be available from the University of Arizona Press in For more information visit arizona.edu Search for these and other works by Cherokee author ROBERT J.
