1 August 24, 2018 Attendance Line: (419) Please call the above number if your child is going to be absent from school, or if he or she is in need of an early dismissal because of a doctor's appointment, family emergency, etc. Tardy to School/Early Dismissal Procedures: When dropping off your child to school after the 7:50 bell, or when picking him or her up for an early dismissal, please use the Attendance Door, door #38, located off parking lot A, on the West side of the building. Communication with Parents Electronic communication will occur using several methods. First, these blasts will be sent every two weeks to all parents who have a valid address in PowerSchool. If you know of someone who is not receiving these blasts and who has a child in the high school, please have the parent contact Chris Walendzak, the CHS main office secretary. Second, important events, functions, and accomplishments will be communicated using the website, Facebook, and Twitter. Here is a list of the site names and addresses. Oregon City Schools Website = Oregon City Schools Athletic Website = Facebook = Clay High School (@ClayHighSchoolEagles) Twitter = Clay High School (@ClayHSEagles) Three Rivers Athletic Conference = Please follow Clay and our students on your favorite social media site. CHS Booster Groups Clay has four parent organizations that help with fundraising and student activities. 2 Friday Spirit Days The Eagle Maniacs have been hard at work planning the Friday Spirit themes. They are attempting to earn the BCSN Student Section of Season Award. Please wear the spirit wear to the football game on Friday evening to show your support for CHS. Attached is a complete list of the Spirit Themes for the entire season. Can t Make it to An Athletic Contest? Clay High School has partnered with the National Federation of High Schools & Pixellot to live stream the athletic contests that are scheduled in Clay Memorial Stadium and Potter Field House. Subscription passes are required to watch sporting events when they air LIVE and then 72 hours after the live broadcasts. After 72 hours, on demand sporting events are accessible for free. Please open the attachment for additional information. Academic Booster Club The first Academic Booster Club (ABC) meeting will be held on Monday, August 27, at 6:30 p.m. in the Learning Commons. This parent booster group is responsible for all student recognition based on academic achievement. Please join us on Monday to help plan the student recognition for the school year. Athletic Booster Golf Outing The Annual CHS Athletic Booster Golf Outing will be held on Saturday, September 9, at 9:00 a.m. at Eagles Landing Golf Course. The registration deadline is August 30. Attached is the registration flyer. FFA Ohio State Fair Emilie Fisher and Megan Mawhorter, senior Oregon Clay FFA members, were privileged to attend the Ohio State Fair through the Ohio Youth Capital Challenge on July 27, This program is a scholarship organization through FFA, 4H, and the Farm Bureau, in which students are nominated to attend workshops, to meet with legislatures, and to work in teams to develop a policy presentation. They were able to make it to the finals with their policy on the inconsistencies of the food labels, such as best-by, sell-by, and use-by date. Forty delegates were selected for the Youth Capital Challenge and Megan and Emily s team received fourth place at the finals. Congratulations, ladies, CHS is proud of you! Clay High Alumni and Friends Association (CHAFA) CHAFA will be sponsoring several events in the middle of September. First, the Distinguished Alumni and Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet will be held on Thursday, September 13. This event will be held at St. Michaels Centre beginning at 6:00 p.m. Reservations for this event must be
3 made by September 5. CHAFA is sponsoring two events on Saturday, September 15. They will be holding a golf outing on September 15, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Eagles Landing. Furthermore, the 22 nd Annual Groove in the Grove will be held on the same day at Eagles Landing beginning at 7:00 p.m. Please open the attachments for informational flyers for all three events. Flag of Valor Clay held our annual open house on Monday, August 20. During open house, a dedication ceremony was held for the most recent display in CHS; the Flag of Valor Wall. The location of the flag is in the center of the school in the hallway down from the cafeteria. Former principal Rick Heintschel ( ), purchased the flag that is hanging in the hallway. The Flag of Valor was dedicated to the many men and women of the United States Armed Forces, who are serving or who have served our country, and fought for the freedom each and every one of us enjoys today. A special thank you is extended to CHS art teacher, Kristin Wamer, for the placement of the flag and for decorating the wall around the flags. Three students (Kaylee Madrid, Jena Mies, and Hannah Sigler) worked countless hours with Mrs. Wamer to complete the project. A huge Thank You to Rick Heintschel for donating the flag to CHS and to Mrs. Wamer, Kaylee, Jena and Hannah for showing their Eagle Pride and painting the wall. Pictures of the Flag of Valor Wall are attached. Renhill Job Placement Renhill Job Placement has an office at Clay High School to help students find employment. A Renhill employee will be available to students every Thursday in the Career & Tech Office, from 9:15 a.m. 1:15 p.m. Students may stop in the office to discuss job opportunities, or to ask and get answers for any questions the students may have. Attached is additional information and the waiver that is needs to be signed if your child participates in this program. Sun Federal Credit Union Sun Federal Credit Union will once again partner with CHS to operate a student-run credit union and expose students to money management skills, budgeting and the importance of saving money. The credit union will be open on Wednesdays during all lunch periods. Lucas County Library The Lucas County Library is offering a free online tutoring service for students in junior high and high school. Please open the attachment for additional information. Bowling Team Clay High School does have a bowling team! Tryouts for the team for boys and girls will be held on September 1, at 9:00 a.m. at Southwyck Lanes. The high school season begins the following week. If you have any questions about the team or tryouts, please have you son or daughter stop by the CHS main office to obtain the coach s contact information.
4 Required Senior Immunization The meningitis MCV4 vaccine is required by law in order for all students in the graduating class of 2019 to attend school. If your child has received the immunization, please have your child give a copy of the shot record to the school nurse at Clay (located next to the attendance office). If your child has not received the required immunization, please have your child immunized immediately. You may call your doctor s office to get the immunization, or the Mercy Health Center at Clay High School has the immunization available for your child. If you would like to schedule an appointment with the Health Center, please call to schedule the appointment. Your child s updated shot record must be on file at Clay High School by Friday, September 21, 2018, or your child will not be allowed to attend school on that day and on all subsequent days of the school year. Any absences due to the lack of immunizations will be recorded as unexcused absences. Please contact the school nurse (Meghan Ferguson, RN) at , ext. 2040, if you have any questions. Wheels Only 5K Students and community members are invited to participate in Oregon City Schools first Wheels Only 5K. All proceeds will support creating universal playgrounds at the three OCS elementary buildings. Participants must be on wheels. Acceptable wheels for the race include wheelchair, walker, skateboard, roller blades, roller skates, bicycle, wagon, and stroller. Attached is a registration flyer and additional information. Freshman Orientation The freshman school year began on Wednesday, August 15, with freshman orientation. Even though this was a non-mandatory day of attendance, there were over 250 freshmen in attendance. The students participated in a variety of different activities throughout the day. The freshmen took a building tour, listened to the CHS administration discuss school policies and dress code, and had the opportunity to experience the cafeteria before all students arrived for the first day of school. The day was topped off when the students participated in a scavenger hunt and completed different activities on the app "Goose Chase." A special thank you is extended to the Oregon Police Department for their community partnership with Clay High School and for sponsoring the motivational speaker, Rick Metzger. Furthermore, I would like to recognize the 27 CHS student who gave up their last day of summer vacation to help the freshmen get acclimated to their new building. The day couldn t have gone as smoothly as it did without the help from: Carlie Barney, Keeley Bowmer, Lillie Connors, Camry Cook, Sarah Finger, Robert Fletcher, Delaney Gargac, Anna Giller, Kaden Havener, Blake Hornyak, Madison Huss, Andy Kessler, Alex Manthey, Mikayla Mariano, Becca McGath, Nikolas McNeal, Ellie McVicker, Cali Jo Quigg, Jenna Richardson, Claire Rokicki-Counterman, Morgan Rossler, Amber Saxon, Faith Schweizer, Sammy Silva, Amber Smith, Grace Smith, and Madison Taylor.
5 Yearbook The yearbook class offered a free yearbook at open house. All the parent had to do was stop by the yearbook table in the cafeteria and complete a paper.
